You don't need to own anything over 1k to play professionally. Over 1k is basically just blowing money on aesthetics and "american made" which equals shit quality these days. 600-1000 is the sweet spot for an import guitar.

It has nothing to do with being poor. I think there are some brands out there that you get your moneys worth for. Custom shop ESP, Musicman, Suhr, high end Ibanez, etc. But the majority of American Gibsons and Fender are complete shit. Even the American Charvel / Jackson / EVH are kind of shit. I see no reason to upgrade to an american Charvel when it has less features and sounds / plays no better than a mexican. Same with Jackson. Because they put Duncan or other high end pickups in their guitars. Now when it comes to Fender they intentionally put shitty pickups in their import guitars to make their American line seem more high end. More often than not those higher end american guitars have worse craftsmanship, but better hardware. I will say, I've played a 2019 SSS Fender Strat Ultra that was amazing, but that's the Ultra line. I've never been impressed with the American standard or now the "performer" line of guitars. I've also never been impressed with any Gibson I've played, whether it was a 1500 dollar studio or a 6000 dollar custom.

I'm the guy that posted the no more tears cover. I play a 900 dollar Yamaha. I've been playing for 30 years. I've owned American fenders and gibsons. I've played basically everything out there. The guitars I've been most impressed with over the years have been musicman. But, I can't afford a 4000 dollar guitar.
