The truth is that it doesn't really matter why we are who we are. The past is over and done with, and whatever it left us with is what we have now. My advice would be to do what feels right and not worry about why things are the way they are. Accept what is and embrace it.

As for the second part, I think that's a sentiment a lot of people can relate to, gay or not. I feel the same just about normal or "popular" culture. I'm not into the generic dating scene or casual sex, going out to bars to pick up girls, etc, and it has made it harder to find love, but I'd rather be true to myself and my own values in order to attract somebody I'm truly compatible with than force myself to be someone I'm not in order to find someone that I probably won't be compatible with anyway.

There are definitely lots of other gay people who feel the same way you do. It might be harder to find them, but trust me when I say it's better than compromising your values to be someone you're not.
