I thought the first season was pretty terrible. The second and third seasons were fine. Fourth was all over the place and stank of Nefcy not knowing what to do, but still wanting to shove her self-insert and husbando-self-insert together, to make the whole thing about their genitals being destined to slam together.
The core problem with Star was that the setting was never meant to exist, and the core premise was flimsy. So once it got deep enough, of course nothing got explained - there was never any logic to any of it. The only thing that had a payoff was the only thing the author cared about: herself.

It's a common problem that fans will obsess over glory days while ignoring how bad they were. Adventure Time fans had the same problem, in lamenting that the series turned into what it did, when "it should have always been wacky adventures." Ignoring that such a premise runs its course pretty quickly, and you get a pretty stale show if nothing ever happens and there's nothing to develop off of. Steven Universe had a similar problem with its obsession with townies. Star's problem was its similar focus on nobodies with some really weak story delivery. Toffee was the only good component of the show because he was the only source of development. He didn't even have many speaking lines or scenes.

Well, it turns out Toffee was right all along, and Star intentionally destroys magic at the end. Which also has the effect of murdering anyone who was born from magic. So she effectively genocides whole dimensions worth of people.
And this was all to stop some crazy guys in armor from smashing their castle. Which probably could have easily been dealt with in some other way. Although she also refuses to try any other plan.
