As for the answer, a mix of desperation and relative constant success, SEGA itself said that they stopped trying a long time ago but americans will still buy sonic for some reason no matter what, since their other properties are bigger in japan and europe, Sonic is just a sideproject for some extra american bucks here and there. They never actually lost money with any Sonic project, they aways tried to enlarge the fanbase, but it was aways big enough for profit
