Plus, Connie running off due to his own sacrifice was a bit self centered. Like I get she wants to help and doesn't feel that Steven should do this alone. Just his problems are basically family issues and they truly aren't her buisness in the slightest. Steven also had to remind her that they're going to space to check on Lars and his crews well being not have fun. Even in the movie her choosing to go to space camp was a bit narcissistic.

Her development on a larger scale was learning that she was worth more than her technology, and that she had intrinsic within herself; the metal powers are a literal manifestation of that.
But in the episode that she discovered them, her arc was learning that she was, again, worth more than technology, and had intrinsic worth within /regardless/ of whether or not she had fancy gem powers. She almost came to the realization, then the show chickened out and gave her metal bending at the last minute.
The metal powers are, narratively, the same as her getting her limb enhancers back thanks to the ocean just washing them up on the shore next to her. She shouldn't have gotten any powers, her "worth" should have been through her mind and the things she can create.
