Sure, but to me drawing visual parallels between superheroes and soldiers is part of an interpretation of them that puts too much focus on 'fighting bad guys' as their main role, instead of protecting, rescuing and inspiring people (I know irl soldiers do a lot of things other than fight, I'm just talking what people tend to associate with the look). Also from a in-universe PR perspective, I feel like as the peaceful 'humans and mutants should live in harmony' people, Xavier and the X-men would want their team to look as little like a private army as they could.

The point was to convey professionalism while also serving as a recognizable indicator of affiliation. In early stories they worked WITH the government instead of being fucked by them at literally every opportunity. If you're going to be coordinating with law enforcement and emergency responders in an official capacity, instead of just bursting through windows and punching people, having a recognizable and consistent uniform is quite helpful.
