Friend got me these Fables TPBs (don’t mind the language), should I bother reading if I don’t have volumes 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11? These seem to cover issues #34 to #75, which seems like a lot. Am I missing too much or am I in for a good time with the issues I already have? I heard Fables is some of Vertigo’s best.
Friend got me these Fables TPBs (don’t mind the language), should I bother reading if I don’t have volumes 6, 7, 8...
how about you read the first one, see if you actually like it or not, and come back and make a thread then
I’m reading it all, I’m asking this only because I want to know if I’m missing too much reading the issues I have right NOW or if it would be better if I waited til I somehow got the remaining issues before I started with the whole series
well you're missing 40 issues so yeah that's a lot.
and you won't know if you want them until you read up to volume 6. so read up to volume 6, and if you want more, fill in the holes.
Those are really important volumes. The main plot from vols 1-5 is resolved.
It's heavily serialized so you won't be able to skip to #12 from 6. But it's definitely worth trying the first five to see if you like it
What about that Werewolves of the Heartland? It seems like the only story missing from the TPBs, compared to the deluxe edition. Is it worth tracking it or is it filler?
Fables is more of an graphic novel told in the comic book format than your traditional comic book. missing 5 trades like that will be like missing chapters from a book.
Protip: TPB's sell for cheap on ebay. Most of the time they only depreciate in value from when they were bought. You can save a lot of money if you don't care about being the first person to read them.
Also, I think those are two volumes of the spinoff, Fairest, on top? Gotta wait until after issue 101 to start those. 1001 Nights of Snowfall is less dependent but you'll want to hold off until, mm, like fifty, maybe? Might be okay reading that after you finish volume 5, it's been a while
It's a decent enough story but not at all necessary. Again, been a while, but it plugs in somewhere after issue 100. You'll definitely want to track down the other spinoff, Jack of Fables, though
yeah, two volumes of Fairest TPB (#1 to #14, I hope they close a story arc, cause the other ones are completely sold out even in comic stores in my country) and 1001 nights TPB. Thanks for the info
Jack of Fables, got it, this seems like a hard one to track over here as well
Volumes 1-22 is the main story. Everything else is non-essential spin off material for fans of the main work. Also be aware that the creator is a conservative and the first 11 volumes are an allegory about Israel and the Middle East. If you're a tranny you might not want to read it.
how does Jack compare to the main series?
I’m conservative too, so that won’t be an issue
Just read it online
fuck online, I hate reading on computer / tablet screens. I might end up doing it, though, my autism will probably prevent me from going to TPB #12 without reading what happened after #5, I’ll just have to look for it
>fuck online, I hate reading on computer / tablet screens.
Same. which ends up costing me a lot of money.
with stuff like music and film you can download it and it's the same experience as buying it. but comics man, reading digitally and reading paper is a totally different experience. makes the hobby real expensive
I remember reading this series for the first time and thought "wow this is some pure unfiltered garbage writing". Forced myself to get to the Boogie Man bit and then just dropped it like it was fucking hot
yeah, there’s something about having a good hardcover or trade paperback in hands that can’t be replicated by digital, no matter if you can zoom or if it has higher definition etc.
what didn’t you like about the first issues? The murder mystery seems interesting so far
yup. you'll never properly enjoy a two page spread digitally, for instance.
there are however 3 advantages to digital that I will not deny
a) free
b) no light required. can read in the dark
c) portable. can carry around tens of thousands of comics in your backpack.
in spite of this I find the satisfaction of holding it in your hands as well as being able to look gloriously upon your /shelf/ to be more worthwhile
Don't skip 6-11. That would be like watching half of The Godfather.
>no light
not an issue anymore since I got pic related, but I can’t deny the other advantages
It seems the local publisher will be releasing the deluxe hardcover editions that cover those volumes of TPBs between 2020 and 2021, so I’ll definitely have to use the internet for those, if I don’t wanna go to ebay or somwhere like it
that'll do the trick but the way a comic is lit can totally change the way the art looks. to do it justice you need full lighting. I only read comics when the sun is out for this reason
yeah, that one is better for books / manga
oh yeah for novels as long as you can read the words you're good to go. and since manga is black and white the way the light affects color isn't really an issue.
ebay is kinda fucked because I assume user is a BR and a dollar costs something like 5 brl at the moment.
it’s around 4 brl right now, but latin america has an ebay alternative called Mercado Livre which essentially functions the same, so I’d probably use that to get the BR editions if I wanted to find used TPBs that are out of stock everywhere else
