The point is not that a FoTM WILL steamroll the competition, it's rather that their popularity at the time is temporary and gives them an unfair advantage compared to other characters who have been around for ages.
Barring any instances of fake votes or rigging, if Spinel had won miss Yea Forums 2019 it'd have been impressive and a great show of her popularity for sure, but we also don't know if she will be nearly as popular in a year.

How much of a delay? A month, 3-6 months? A year? New characters have fotm bias for sure but it seems hard to quantify new popularity vs. longstanding love of a previous character.
It also brings up the issue that the show already has established characters and the movie just came out so there's renewed interest in the already existing characters, especially after a hiatus.

The dumpster fire we ended up with was comprised of three main components: the kindling, the spark and the gasoline poured on the fire.
The kindling was made up of the dislike that a substantial part of this board has for SU in general and its fandom in particular. Like the Balkans prior to WWI, it was a fire just waiting for a spark to start.
The second component was the spark that set the kindling alight: Spinel being new and spammed in multiple simultaneous threads by an already contentious fan base and riding this wave of fotm into a position as top seed, riling up already muttering crowds. Once the spark had struck, a fire was inevitable.
Lastly, the gasoline poured on the resulting fire to make it grow to what we have today: The cheating accusations, the frankly speaking disturbing Spinel spam, role play and avatar posting, numerous SU characters being spread out into every bracket and eliminating a great many contestants, the insecure and impuslive OP, the spite- and trollvoting, etc.
If we took away some of the gasoline, we would have had a smaller fire. If we took away the spark by banning new characters, the kindling might not have caught fire. I think this would be wise to do in the future. However, this is but one spark, there can always be others. I would have liked to see the kindling removed by the mods doing to SU what they did to mlp. If there had been no SU, there would have been no problem.
