So most of the universe is these high fantasy dudes running around invading places that look like easy targets and fighting over territory and status. But Earth never discovered FTL. Science progressed to its modern level, granting military power greater than the rest of the universe combined. One day, an alien spaceship shows up and disgorges a troop of knights that demand fealty. When it's clear that they're serious, they get massacred with impunity by the locals. And then Earth has the FTL technology and the knowledge that nothing else in the universe would pose a threat to even the military might of the Vatican. And since interstellar travel only needs medieval technology and resources, EVERYONE can get in on it right away. The masquerade / secrecy / whatever is a narrative conceit that allows high fantasy to exist at all in a modern setting.

I kept giving Nefcy the benefit of the doubt because I thought she had planned out some spectacular, romantic and over-the-top plotline for when Starco hooked up (especially after Bloodmoon Ball and Face the Music) that could only happen at the end of the series but they just sort of decide to hook up in a barn like two episodes after she is finally free from Tom, we get some cheap drama about how they'll never see each other again, they do see each other again and then the show ends.
