I was following this monthly back in the day. I was extremely invested in the story. When Dave pulled this meta- stunt it felt like being punched in the face because Cerebus’ world felt so real to me. There’s something else coming up (not the anti-feminist stuff) that was also a complete shock— and Dave perfectly captured how I felt when reading it.

I thought the feminism essay rant would go on for longer than one issue. Besides that one, the rest of this felt totally in place with the rest of the story. Im surprised and not surprised that just one issue like that essentially robbed the rest of the narrative of any attention in the public discourse.

I don’t disagree with him on a lot of that tirade.

Though I think he makes a mistake in treating the emotional void as almost exclusively female, as if there aren’t absurd amounts of men who think with their emotions and can’t be reasoned with. Rational men aren’t much more common than rational women in my experience. Really if he made it all about reason vs emotion without the male/female dichotomy I bet this issue wouldnt be talked about more than any other. Im also surprised how at odds it seems with everything before this point, it almost felt like it was making points about gender fluidity before this. Cerebus is a herm and Artemis has a lady side to his spirit and Elrod was crossdressing and all these strong female characters (who are actually well written!). This all-or-nothing proposition seems so at odds with all of that.

He doesn't say that it can't occur in men, I don't know if he already said it in these issues but at some point he goes on to say that the feminized society has feminized the minds of lots of men, basically saying what modern Yea Forums calls "basedboys". In one of his later essays he really lays into the French and Quebec because he thinks they act like spoiled wives.

Well he mentioned exceptions exist but that they shouldn’t be treated as a norm.

So do future issues become half random essays as well?

I honestly can't remember because if they did then I wasn't reading them. I think it gets better in the arcs immediately after Mothers and Daughters but then it gets really bad towards the end.

I have been picking up Mothers and Daughters as floppies over the years and I have to say reading it in fragments is frustrating as fuck as far as each issue having only around 8-9 pages of actual story pages and then 20-25 pages of texts pieces and letter page and editorials.

Do the trades move all of the text pieces to the back of the trades or is it as disjointed as fuck as reading it as a monthly book? And was there some sort of behind the scenes reasons why Mothers and Daughters was about 70% text pieces?

Mothers and Daughters was the climax of the entire Cerebus story (Sim himself has stated #201-300 are basically one big coda and that you can stop at #200 if you want). So you could make the case that Sim had a story that at best, could run 20-30 issues and had to stretch it out.

As for the text pieces, the infamous one aside, context is needed for the bulk of the text pieces that get lost due to how #186 overshadowed them.

At the time Mothers and Daughters was being published, there was a HUGE indie boom in the comic industry and Image Comics was super big and bringing the issue of creators rights to the forefront in a way Sim never imagined possible. And the Image gang, in one way or another, all slowly but surely sold out and left Sim disillusioned.

The text piece were a major bit of meta as Sim tried to express his opinions on being a self-published 100% creator owned comic publisher and how he spent years refusing to sell out and how he saw all sorts of comic creators who started out as creator owned creators, one by one, selling out to the Big Two.

But how is it collected in the trade?

Was Dave Sim redpilled before the redpill was a thing?
