It's revealed that the reason everyone in Elmore is drawn with different mediums and artistic styles is that they are all refugees from their home dimensions, which were consumed by a mysterious void. The Void finally finds its way to the reality where Elmore exists and it's up to the Waterson family to piece together as much information as they can from the other citizens to understand what the Void is and how it can be stopped.
It turns out that each and every reality is the product of the imagination of one chosen being within that reality, and the escapees are those "Chosen Ones" (Tina came from a world full of prehistoric carnage, Bobert from a realm of CGI technological perfection, Teri from a 2-dimensional land inhabited by doodles, etc.)
Once the family is successful, everyone in town has the option to return to their newly revived home dimensions, but everyone stays, knowing that the Amazing World of Gumball is their true home now and that their realms deserve the chance to forge their own stories, instead of being subject to their own imaginations.

Gumball and company discover that their world is on the verge on cancellation/ending and are dragged into the Void, but they try to fight back as best as they can. They learn about what they really are and what they could've been (like learning that the show could have been on Adult Swim, Penny being a reject character from another channel, how everything revolves around Gumball, etc.), but at the end they don't escape. They come to terms that they are screwed but it was overall an amazing journey, and that maybe one day they'll be able to leave the Void (being renewed, a revival, or some spinoff).
