They will. King just couldn't have Dick around, because he's basically a second Batman and takes over when Bruce gets broken/taken out of action, and it would have gotten in the way of his narrative to have DickBats and Damien sweep in together. Dick would have had none of the emotional tie ups that fucked Bruce up.
The entire plot relied up fucking Bruce up, in fact. Dick would either have pulled (or beaten) Bruce out if it *or* he would have taken over when needed and their plot would have uravelled that way.

Dick's an editorial bitch just like every other characters. King did Dick's fans a favor in taking him off his story. The problem is what was done with the character after that. He also have missed a bullet with editorial refusing to go along with King's idea and shoving Tim in Nigtwing, but getting stuck with Ric isn't exactly a much better deal.
