I actively enjoyed John and Rose's routes but this was pretty bad aside from the Olive Garden bit. I have really grown to dislike James Roach. The long song titles have grown annoying, his music is pretty mediocre, and all of his general speaking and writing for all this stuff just feels tinged with some kind of general apathy and distaste towards the Homestuck universe.

About half the existing fandom. They were meant to be divisive, and they were. The aim is to rile people into taking over the future of the franchise. So there’s things about the epilogue that are good and make you invested, and things that make you want to fix it.

Aside from the stuff that was intentionally put in to upset you and make you reject it (none of it really upset me though), I thought there was a lot of flat-out cool shit.

I don’t get how people can dislike them completely. The epilogues were more interesting and entertaining than all of Act 6 to me.
And depressing plots are half the reason I love homestuck - it was Davesprite’s doomed timeline that got me deeply hooked in the first place.
I think people just want things to be over and the characters to get a happy end. I don’t, there’s still so much potential left in Homestuck. I sympathize with Dirk for wanting to push things on.

try reading homestuck 1-5 and try imagining any of the garbage in the epilogues happening at the end. the characters in the epilogues are like hollow haunts; like the victims of bodysnatchers whose effect is to rot you out first before they assume your bodily form. like mind-entity-ghosts from outer space, who make people a dim caricature theater before the sentient beings are sufficiently weakened to assume their flesh.

or in other words, they're generally horrifying in nature, and anything that might seem good in them (maybe 5-10 things?) would have to happen in an entirely different 'narrative' (homestuck, as a 'whole,' can't even be said to have a narrative; they're like water and hellish fire) to be good.

Occasionally you see this "what timeline are we in?!" post whenever something meme-y enters the mainstream. There's an in-joke that we split off of the 'proprer' timeline at some point, often said to be Trumps election.

I am convinced this happened, and Hussie is the Scratched version of a Seer, Doom or Time player, the only one of his team with faint, echoed memories of his last session. He started HS before the time-split, treading some fine line where he maintained Alpha Timeline coherency, but he fucked up at some point and now its all spiralling down. I think it's all coming down to this sort of point though - in the clown twins route at the end of Friendsim, MSPAR is put into a mysterious trap of time and space in a haunted house with them. The reader keeps trying to escape the kids because they keep doing fucked up shit to them, and things keep getting reset.
The only way they escape is by remembering what their core motivation is, and befriending the two trolls.
The core theme of Homestuck was, at the beginning, the friendship between online buddies.

You can skim the latter half of the meat epilogue, (there is also some trans talk in the candy epilogue she stays as a girl there). Roxy goes from "she" to "they" to "he" in meat and starts dressing like dave, along with talking about gender and what she identifies as now or whatever. Calliope and Dirk actually fight over what pronouns to use for her in the narration, which was kinda neat.

I watched the quests on YouTube, and is it just me or are the routes here way shorter than the friendsims? The entire time I was watching, the routes seemed very half assed. Also there was too much "Twitter humor" that was very distracting and dated.

I get that. I wish I could properly communicate how or why the way they're written doesn't feel right, because on a surface-level, they're the same, but looking at them overall, they don't really act like how the characters should act. Like a horrible uncanny valley of personality.
With the epilogues, it was especially jarring, because characters would behave in ways that seemed completely out of left field in comparison to their prior characterization, but still retained the same mannerisms. With Pesterquest, it's less extreme, but despite the attempt to imitate the writing style of the earlier acts, the characters don't feel or act the same. The earlier acts had characters that almost felt real, despite being so outlandish, whereas it feels as though they've been reduced to caricatures.

Davesprite was there when Bro died, Dave wasn't. I think that Dave not experiencing the moment of fighting alongside his brother and feeling equal to him in their attempt to take down Jack (as well as seeing Bro fail and die while barely escaping himself) was a crucial character moment he needed. Without it and with 3 years trapped on the meteor with a bunch of shitty people he internalized all the negativity he felt towards Bro without considering the positives. To Dave Bro never cared about him, he ran off and got himself killed before Dave could have his personal catharsis.

Davesprite didn't seem to have the retarded issue with Bro that Dave had, instead he got wrapped up in the belief because he was the doomed Dave he didn't deserve his relationship with Jade or being bros with John. He felt he was intruding on the timeline he wasn't meant to exist in (in his mind). The ultimate resolution of Davesprite as a character makes this conflict and trajectory even more tragic, because he ultimately does erase himself from the lives of the second displaced timeline he exists in while leaving John and Roxy in the same position he was one timeline ago. Becoming Davepeta and doing fuck all aside a shitty meaningless pep talk to Jade and then disappearing to kill/get killed by Lord English is possibly one of the worst endings for him.

I can explain exactly what the problem with the characters are. They used to have organic personalities that reacted to the events in the story in their own unique ways. John is a gullible goober, but he has an honest heart and sees the best in people, as shown in his interactions with Vriska. Jade was introduced as kind of an airhead but is revealed to have the shortest temper of the kids and becomes a formidable girl. Rose had a very go getter attitude to finding all the mysteries of sburb, but reveals that she's actually a very emotional girl when she finds out her mom died. Dave was a stoic guy because he had admired his bro and wanted to emulate him, but he was a very reactive person as shown with the puppets and his interactions with Terezi. They all reacted differently but they had great chemistry together because there was effort in showing why they were friends.

However in the last half of Homestuck and to the present they aren't written as individuals, their written as props. It begins to be a flavor of the week thing where they try to insert whatever is topical at the time. When the dirkjake thing happened everyone was writing their thinkpieces about how progressive and aware Hussie was. Even though that was one of the most poorly handled romances in the comic. Then there was the gamergate tier caliborn calliope allusions. Then there was the shifting focus to increasing meta humor and realism. Throughout all of these changes the beta kids became depressing shadows of themselves. This comic expects me to believe Rose would let Vriska boss her around? To believe Dave only saw Jade as a burden who put her expectations on him? Rose's alcoholism, Dave's abuse, what was the point of any of that? None of it mattered because it wasn't treated like it did.

Comparing Eridan to Dave is quite possibly the stupidest thing Hussie has said in the commentaries and that's saying a lot

Eridan is proto Jane and Karkat is proto Caliborn.

Jane's whole issues with being from a position of promised power and importance only to lose that and her idealized relationship with someone she likes is pound for pound Eridan minus the hemospectrum complex. She even recreated the breakup scene in a visual callback.

Caliborn is really just Karkat of all his nasty trolling was 100% serious, they share the same blood color and even a similar typing style. Try switching their rants to match the other's typing conventions and it gets more obvious.

I always convince myself that doing a full re-read from start to finish without interruptions will somehow make it all okay and unlock a true understanding and appreciation of the whole comic, but I always give up in mid Act 6 around when the beta kids enter the alpha session. Has anyone managed to do this successfully? I take it it doesn't work the way I hoped it would. Early Act 6 is definitely better on a re-read without hiatuses, but everything goes to shit later anyway, and that's well before the point of no return, Game Over.

I’m a 2015 reader that happily read every word there was in the comic, including Openbound, and I still love Homestuck, but yeah. That stopped at some point before Game Over, and then I started skipping around and skimming. I think there are parts I’ve still never read.

It’s rough seeing that liveblogger on tumblr, dafuk, reach this part. She started out with so much enthusiasm, but you can see how tired of it she’s getting. And you can see her thinking that things are leading to things, or that these characters will get development. Homestuck's decline in quality affected most of us so greatly because we lived Homestuck updates and fandom for years and experienced all of this over the course of several hiatuses, a couple of which were extraordinary in length. A latecomer to the series benefits enormously from only investing a few months in this shitshow at most. For you, the story going to shit just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. For me, it was like having my dearly beloved family gradually losing their minds and senses of self to dementia and derangement before being replaced by similarly vacant and hollow copies of themselves.

It can’t be said whether natural Troll reproduction would be as uncontrollable as Alternias. On Alternia, the threat of death by drones forced every single troll to try their hardest to get buckets filled. And drones were bringing buckets to the Mother every minute like a factory line. A world where trolls aren’t pressured into fucking or contributing their material may have more balanced population levels.

And if they do still grow to ridiculous numbers, they can do as their ancestors and move off-planet, only without the military conquest. But that might interfere with Dirk and Rosebot’s planet, and they can’t have that.

Instead of trying to impose regulations on another species’ reproduction right out the gate, they should have been allowed to be left to their own devices for a few generations. And if things started getting messy then you enter into talks with them about regulation, if Kanaya and Karkat weren’t already thinking about it themselves.

and then epilogues will have only happened to the retcon characters. and heck, the story could continue with the epicon characters as as a part of it, like guardian age, some of them villains, opening up all sorts of dialogue between the two sets of casts we’ve known for 5 years each.

Agreed. Act 4 is what Homestuck was supposed to be and represents the apex of its writing, setting, and soundtrack. I think Hussie originally planned to end the story not too long after this but act 5 just kept dragging on and on and on with the trolls. In an alternate universe Homestuck wrapped up around 2011 with the kids facing Spades Slick and Scratch as the final boss and creating a new universe with the 4 trolls original trolls and it was a much tighter, cohesive story that didn't overstay its welcome. In this alternate universe Hussie went on to create several more MSPA's and would be considered to be among the greatest contemporary artists of the age and an inspiration to independent creators everywhere.

The epilogues pandered to me specifically in a few ways, one of which is the Dirk/Rose stuff. Rose is my fave/self-insert/waifu and I have a weird sort of platonic crush on Dirk/Bro - I once dreamt I was “Rose Strider” and lived with Bro, and he was still a cold aloof asshole, but he let me into his room he had in my dream, ruffled my hair, was proud of me, etc.
Basically I had the feeling that he respected me, and it left me with an intense feeling of wanting him as a big brother or something. And even though what Dirk did to Rose was fucked up, I still love that he saw her as being worthy enough to be comparable to himself, and wanted her to come with him so bad.
