I mean I get that it's a comic and it's required to tell more of a story than a video game but...was Sonic's family a bridge too far?

Yeah.
Chuck was a dumb addition in SatAM that got carried over, his parents proper was just Penders continuing to be a control freak.

DON'T TALK SHIT 'BOUT UNCLE CHUCK!!!

My reimagined SatAM universe has Sonic's parents be named Eric and Sonia.

Sonic's real name is "Casey".

He not only sucked, but fucked.

Jules and Bernie fucked.

>that bullshit continuity patch Ian came up with during the nu252 soft reboot so that Uncle Chuck could still exist in lieu of Sega's "no relatives for game characters" mandate
>"Duhhhh we're not actually related, we just CALL him 'uncle' Chuck because he's like an uncle to ALL of us! Duhhh…"

God, Archie Sonic comics are such a hilarious trainwreck.

As someone who grew up in the South US, that's a real thing. The problem was that they didn't take the opportunity to redesign him and they shoved Muttski in without thinking about whether it was a good idea or not, rechristening him after Ben Hurst without stopping to consider if that was a good idea either.

>tfw Bernie is physically 28 at most, more likely 22-24, due to being in stasis for Sonic's whole life.
She could basically be his sister.

Cute!

No.

"Olgilvie Maurice Hedgehog" was.

Eh, Jules was kinda based.

It's not just a south thing. All the time I see scenarios where a dad will have his kid call his friend uncle.

Chuck is needed for Sonic to be grounded on Mobius.
I don't care about the Nips hating their parents, Sonic was supposed to be meant for a Western audience.
t. SatAm euro

You do make an interesting point. There's nothing that keeps IDW Sonic in one place for long. He doesn't have one particular city he wants to defend above all else like Archie Sonic, and he's not a lethargic slacker like Boom Sonic.

Sonic and Tails getting their parents back was dumb. And Tails's parents coming back was Flynn so he doesn't get a pass either.
The ONLY redeemable aspect of this is that Sonic having a robot dad is kind of a neat concept in and of itself. There was a tragic irony to the fact that Sonic's dad looked like a Metal Sonic.

He doesn't really need grounding, does he?

Depends. Game Sonic doesn't. But in an ongoing comic/show one starts to wonder where he sleeps and shit.
I think AoStH is the only non-game media that never gave him some kind of home to return to.

I don't see how. His parents really didn't get in the way and Chuck just moved along plot points that Rotor and later Tails would have done themselves anyways. And even that wasn't so bad since he just gets regulated to home/civilian engineer/IT guy while the former remain the field agents.

Plus

>But in an ongoing comic/show one starts to wonder where he sleeps and shit.
Since when? Nobody gives a fuck where Mickey and Felix and Koko and Alley Oop and Popeye sleep. It's not relevant to the story.

>tittysonic is canon

Would you?

>Tails started cartoon brown, later became game orange

>his parents stayed cartoon brown

Lame.

This

That's like saying we need to know Sonic's social security number. The fact that it doesn't come up doesn't matter, it's assumed he has a home since we don't see evidence to the contrary.

This is why only changing what you're forced to/not adapting as you go is a bad call. If you have a flexible franchise, you have to keep things fresh even if it breaks 'canon'

I'm pretty sure Game Sonic is a Nomad (outside of rare cases like Secret Rings).
Even Sonic Battle didn't give him a home despite Knuckles and Rouge both getting residences (Knuckles' House and Club Rouge).

Can you really blame Archie for that, though? It seems more like a result of SEGA going full autismo, not bothering to look into the finer details and just throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Sonics parents were the only good parents in the pre-reboot. King Max was an asshole and Tails’ parents shouldn’t have existed in the first place.

>Sonic is changed from his original design to that of Adventure through a weird story involving him traveling backwards through time with a giant Chaos Emerald on his back
>Robotnik is revived by bringing in a parallel dimension robot version and putting him in a new body which just so happens to be the Adventure redesign
>Amy Rose gets her Adventure redesign by wishing on a Chaos Emerald to be older, though her mind doesn't age with her body
>Everybody else is redesigned without explanation

The Adventure era was a mess for the Archie continuity.

It was a mixture of Sega going full retard, Archie going full retard, Ian being torn apart in the middle, and Penders combing through the rubble claiming everything as his.

Because it takes away Sonic's mystique.

It's like "NOOOOO YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO THINK ABOUT THAT!"

>Can you really blame Archie for that, though?
No, but I sure can blame Ian.
>It seems more like a result of SEGA going full autismo, not bothering to look into the finer detail
What finer details of Mustache Sonic were missed?

It was the first time Sega really put their foot down demanding a close tie in to the game for advertising

Is this from that thing were Jules and Bernie were trying to make Amy feel better and Sonic was being an indifferent d-bag in another room?

>Everyone involved was stupid.
Fixed.

>Sonic is changed from his original design to that of Adventure through a weird story involving him traveling backwards through time with a giant Chaos Emerald on his back

This was always the most difficult thing for me to swallow, they didn't need to be so explicit about the design change, if anything it makes Sonic a chaos mutant.

If I can analyze this at a deep level, having parents gives Sonic people in his life to love, which is something that isn't attached to his personality. Sonic is everyone's friend but he doesn't grow close to anyone in particular (except for maybe Tails, and even then the relationship is more mutual than sentimental).

You add that component and it feels foreign. Giving Sonic someone he can open up to doesn't feel...right.

It's less finer details and more what the reboot symbolizes: Ian, the madman, was basically creating a canon by combining elements Sega themselves discarded or abandoned and mixed them with the western continuities.
Chuck and Snively are part of that philosophy, though what greater plans (if any) he had for Chuck we'll never know for obvious reasons.

Honestly, I think Sonic Boom has the most fun with Sega's "No Relatives" rule when they introduced "Eggman's Brother" but then spent every second he was on screen explaining that they're not REALLY brothers! I guess the joke is kinda lost on the audience if they don't know about Sega's "No Relatives" thing, but if you get the inside gag, it's really funny how much they're taking the piss out of Sega with that character.

Thats dumb. Stupid shit is questions like "Why doesn't Knuckles have 5 fingers?" In which we get a convoluted answer to. If you're already this deep into archie than everything is going to feel foreign anyways given that Eggman is trying to take over the world beyond for the lolz and Sonic is fighting for his OC friends who very much care for their homes.

Besides, its not like Sega hasn't given Sonic family before.

The part where Sonic's dad makes Scourge run away like a pussy ass bitch is gold

There is just no appeal in Sonic being some kind of autist who is nobody's friend and just want to gotta go fast. Relatives matters. Even if the Isekai-craving Japs don't get it, you are who you are through your relation with other people, who are special to you, not through your relation with IT DZNT MATTR. You can't get attached to a character being reduced to such a gimmick and Sonic being cut down from his western canon is certainly one of the main reason he had such a fall (the other one being the overly cringy Adventure artwork, the redesign itself is fine). Even the Japanese canon suffered, no more Emerald Town and Super Sonic has nothing to do with Super Saiyan. Even fucking Mario has more of a backstory than Iizuka's retarded chopped canon now.
