You know I alway hear about stuff like "Ninjas are always popular with children" but outside of the Ninja Turtles, when has Ninjas ever really reached high popularity?
You know I alway hear about stuff like "Ninjas are always popular with children" but outside of the Ninja Turtles...
The 80s and into the early 90s had a huge ninja boom, which TMNT was just a part of. GI Joe had ninjas to the point where they eclipsed the military aspect. Power Rangers had ninjas. Fucking Transformers had ninjas.
Also, Naruto.
As a kid growing up in the 90s I fucked loved ninjas, TMNT obviously, but there were also movies like Three Ninjas, the arc in Power Rangers wherein they were ninjas, all the ninja themed video games, the mortal kombat games, cartoons and comics. Ninjas are fucking awesome
>Power Rangers had ninjas
Only in it's third season, which the popularity was dying down. Though the movie did have some ninjas. All other ninja seasons were post-00
Probably late 80s early 90s where I'm from.
I mean, everyone and their mom knows what TMNT is. But everyone I know that genuinely loves it or talks about them as a huge influence (I know a lot of illustrators) are born in the early 80s.
Naruto isn't a ninja, though.
This was the tightest shit when I was 8 and 9, my god it has not aged well, but the nostalgia.
Mortal Kombat penetrated into mainstream media at the same time half its cast was ninja palette swaps and Scorpion and Sub-Zero remain the series' most popular/mascot characters.
At the time when they were created, the most popular comic books were about teenage mutants (X-Men) and ninjas (Frank Miller) so the creators decided to combine them.
Just in general
Rocksteady and Bebop are CUTE!
We also have characters like Elektra who is basically a ninja.
Yup. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, Shinobi, Dragon Ninja, movies like American Ninja, and Psylocke turned ninja.
Ninjago's pretty popular.
But i thought his whole point was that he was Ninja Goku, just like that other goku who is a pirate and the other Goku who is a sidekick to a superhero
Man, I always thought this dude was fucking cool. Whatever happened to him?
Theres a reason the last third of the Marvel comic was renamed 'GI Joe featuring SNAKE EYES!'.
With the 'GI Joe' part in itty bitty letters.
There was a huge explosion of ninjas in popular culture around '84-'85, it was a weird time to be alive. I remember when my elementary school instituted a rule against bringing throwing stars to school, and my buddy brought his anyway, and we sat around talking about the latest terrible ninja movies that were basically made to pander to us.
