I think like Bendis with Superman, it's just a power play for his career. They know the characters have built in visibility, so having their name on a run gives them some.

King won't jump ship until and unless forced because he wants to be seen as having one of the longest runs no matter what. Regardless of its quality, anytime anyone looks into Batman comics in the future they'll see King having a huge of issues giving him double visibility.
