Not a ton, out of Tim Yatras' projects it's one of his least interesting.
"Gone" just feels like a really mediocre Germ with none of the cheesy synths (which is questionable, but it's at least a unique sound), but I do like "Dying Ember" quite a bit. It's not special, but has enough feelsy bits for me to enjoy it every now and then.

I have no idea how you can have that opinion. It's a decent album, but things like Arise! is just so fucking fun. Sonic Mass felt like them trying way too hard to be serious rather than making fun stuff.
I liked it, but it did feel like they were trying to come across as "smarter" rather than making something really good.

I do like a bit of Arise! and the early EPs, but I think the apocalyptic themes and atmosphere resonate harder when they stop goofing around. Some of the almost tribal/ritualistic moments on Sonic Mass are genuinely goosebumps inducing. Also the production on the old albums sounds incredibly thin (which I cant really blame them since it was recorded aeons ago), but the more beefy production did them wonders. Its that and I just like stuff that sounds like 2000s era Killing Joke.

To me it's just the epitome of wank, just shoving in as much fast shit as possible with no regard for how it turns out.
Like for example Drone Corpse Aviator puts me to sleep as it's all basically white noise, then the title drop sounds really fucking neato because the drummer realise the can do more than just gravity blast and it's this nice catchy bit, then it's straight back to gravity blast wank central and I sleep all over again.

That's fair, just sounds like we both enjoy the opposite ends of the Amebix spectrum where I want the goofiness and you want the atmosphere/themes.

Shame, as I'm one of the few who defends Whisper Supremacy (although I'll admit it's obviously not as good). I think it has a lot of good intense bits, but they are fewer and further between.

tbf that Cryptopsy album was probably still better than 90% of death metal albums out there, but I honestly only really liked the second track a lot. It's just a massive step down from the other 2 in every single way and sounds more like a Cryptopsy cover-band than the real thing.

Yeah I don't disagree, I just think after more re-listens I ended up enjoying it more than I did after the first couple where it passed me by.
I *think* I'd take it over their more modern output like the The Book of Suffering EPs just because they're so clean and sterile and Flo's drumming is way less creative.
Once Was Not is a fun album of theirs if you haven't bothered to check it out already. If you had me pick all the albums worth a shit by Cryptopsy it's basically just the first 2 and Once Was Not, never got into the self-titled or further much.

nah grind is usually constantly alternating between metallic riffing over blasts or skanks and fast, crusty hardcore sections. slam is just BDM that's stripped down and focuses on breakdowns.

it has the same chuggy groove riffs/breakdowns that good grindcore does, just without the super blastbeaty sections
