Given that poverty can lead to death (no money to buy food/medicine to save the life of your sick child, for example) if he stole enough, that seems reasonable to me, as he is effectively a murderer.

Flynn was a big-time thief, so this wouldn't mean that capital punishment would be enforced for ALL theft, probably a lesser punishment for petty theft like stealing a loaf of bread to feed a child.

Plus: do we 100% know that theft was all Flynn did? What if he also crippled, even murdered, people in the course of his theft? Perhaps he even raped women? Did they actually list out all his crimes? Do we know he's 100% honest with Raps about his rap sheet?

I think the writters must've thought that would risk the audience blaming Raps too much when it should be some kind of a dilemma... BUT

Varian randomly examining a substance that grows amber PLUS Varian randomly breaking the container PLUS Quirin randomly being stuck in the amber PLUS it randomly being somehow just slow enough to give Varian hope that he can save him with Rapunzel'd help and for Quirin to write a letter Was just too much for me...

It was probably the worst way to unfold to the desired outcome (quirin in the amber) and I'm not happy with it.

How about... One of many equipments Varian used to examine Rapunzel's hair interacted with her hair and started to very slowly grow amber Varian thought it was strange but moves on to examine the hair more (Varian saying that flashes during the episode) for now

A few episodes later, Queen for a day... Varian was studying the rock and the strange amber material he decided to revisit. He finds out both are indestructible.

One of his potions make it grow really fast and swallow a good chunk of his lab. Quirin saves Varian, but instead he got trapped inside the amber

Varian leaves to find Rapunzel as Quirin is trapped to the shoulder. Varian fails, and later he thinks Rapunzel's presence and visit caused the whole thing and swear vengence.

This is just me spitballing, but still better than what we got imo.

I love all the capes and cloaks that show up in this show, every time one appears it's very aesthetic.

Yeah, the entire point of what happens with Varian is that ultimately HE is the only one to blame for what happens to Quirin. Quirin repeatedly tells him not to mess with the rocks, and he does it anyway. But he refuses to admit this, and his denial essentially drives him insane and turns him evil. This is the consistent feature of his character, that he refuses to take responsibility for his own errors. It even shows up in his very first episode. It's his tragic flaw, like Cass' wanting to be great.

Even if she'd left with Varian immediately, there's no chance they'd get there before he was encased. We see that nothing she was capable of doing would have helped Quirin either. Her going to help Varian rather than seek out answers for the storm could have led to massive casualties

Varian could see full well that the rocks were making life hellish for his people and was justifiably upset that everyone seemed set on just ignoring the issue. Who could blame him for doing everything he could to try to solve the problem on his own

It's not until Rapunzel and Varian's conflicts finally reach the boiling point and she has to connect with the black rocks to stop his rampage that she's even shown the first hint of what she actually has to DO to stop this magical crisis

One of the many things I love about this show is that both the "Cass is gay for Rapunzel" and the "Cass is gay for glory" things are both equally valid and not mutually exclusive.

If you choose to focus on the former, Cassandra becomes a tragic figure torn by a love she cannot have, a shame she can never share.

If you focus on the latter, she becomes a flawed figure who believes she's destined for greatness, who fights to prove herself to a doubting world, but finds herself shackled to a woman who overshadows her in every way, a friend who's immense power and thoughtless skill dwarf her every effort. How can a hero compare to a goddess?

And both schools of thought intertwine beautifully, adding to Cassandra's complexity. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, but the best tragic figure of the last decade is in a princess show for babies.

And let's not forget that Rapunzel, herself, is flawed in this show, and she's repeatedly paid for it. She's often oblivious to the pains and struggles her friends are going through. Sometimes she notices in time, and makes it up in elaborate ways; but sometimes she doesn't notice it until it's too late. She also becomes weirdly fatalistic in Season 2, as if she's terrified of going back to Corona and giving up a life of adventure, even though that's logically exactly what she's going to have to do. She's deeply uncomfortable being a princess and a future queen. It doesn't feel quite "her." Honestly, she seems like she was most herself during the bulk of the first movie, a carefree, barefoot adventurer exploring a world she knew nothing about. She has a deep discomfort with consequences and responsibility. It's not the ONLY reason she's been betrayed multiple times now, but it definitely plays a part in that.

Eugene seems a bit fucked up too, by the way. Still living in the shadow of his criminal past. But I feel like he's put his flaws behind him in a way Rapunzel really hasn't.

Eugene's main issue UNTIL the Season 2 finale is that he thinks he can put Flynn Rider behind him neatly and completely, but remnants of his past keep coming back to ruin his present. The Captain of the Guard, Lance, the Baron, Stalyan, they all keep popping up when he'd rather forget about them, and when he'd rather that everyone else forgot about them, too.

Of course, considering what happens in the Season 2 finale, who knows what's going to happen to him now. A whole new can of worms has been opened.

It makes me wonder how Rapunzel will fail Eugene. What secret hurt will she not notice until it's too late. Is it his shame over his criminal past? His longing for his true family? His PTSD from fucking dying?

I think it'll be the proposals. Eugene loves Rapunzel and wants to spend the rest of his life with her. He understands and respects that it's a frightening prospect for her, and he's patient with her. He knows that she isn't refusing because she doesn't love him.

But maybe he doesn't. Maybe he thinks this is too good to be true, too good to last, and he wants to lock it down before it gets away from him. Maybe he believes he doesn't deserve to be her lover. He's just a two-bit crook with delusions of sophistication, an orphan who's only roots are a legacy of misery and death, a loser who got lucky. Maybe he thinks she humoring him, loving him out of a sense of gratitude and guilt. He isn't her lover, he's her debt, her burden, her prison. Just another cage.

Rapunzel won't notice the doubt eating him alive, won't see the hurt in his eyes when she kisses him, until it's too late.

I'm deeply curious about what the Season 3 proposal from Eugene is even going to look like. In Season 1, he proposed and she turned him down and made him wait. In Season 2, he thought about proposing, and she says she would have said "yes," but he pulls back at the last moment.

What happens in Season 3? Obviously we know they get married, but what happens? Does he propose in the first episode of Season 3, like he has the last two seasons, or does the climactic proposal wait until the end of the show?

I've written a Tangled fanfic in the past. I've seriously thought about writing another story, set during the Season 2 finale, where the Moonstone tempts Rapunzel. We know it can call out to people, alter their thoughts. What if it calls out to Raps? What if it tempts her with the promise of ABSOLUTE power, so much power that she can fix everyone she's ever hurt, apologize to everyone she's ever ignored, and that she never has to settle down into the domestic life she seems to hate?

I still think the "Raps is the final boss" theory is underrated. It seems highly plausible to me that the final battle of the show might be Eugene, Lance, Cassandra, Varian, Frederic, Arianna, and all the rest of Rapunzel's friends fighting to save her when she's gone mad with power after merging the Sundrop and Moonstone.

I remember in the end of movie, Eugene said after years and years of asking, he finally said yes. We don't know if it's just a joke, but there is still a possibility that Raps did propose to Eugene in their final proposal. I've always loved how there's continuity between episodes even apart from the main plot. Like, somebody Rapunzel meets in an earlier episode will show up in a later one, and the connection established before will be important.

I do wonder what the future holds for Rapunzel. Obviously she has to hang up her spurs, so to speak, and settle down to eventually become queen. But I can't help but feel she'd never be able to fully put her adventuring days behind her. We contrast her with Arianna a lot, and I think that's instructive here. Arianna did a lot of adventuring as a youth, and then settled down. But Rapunzel's childhood and teenage years were totally unlike Arianna's. I mean, fuck, she was locked in a tower. I feel like she'd never be able to domesticate fully, not the way Arianna has.

And there's also the matter of how much of the Sundrop she'll be able to give up. There may be a part of it that sticks with her, which means she may inevitably get drawn into magical bullshit again in the future. It WOULD be fun to see twentysomething or even thirtysomething Rapunzel being dragged into another adventure.

This post makes me think: what if Rapunzel CAN'T control the Moonstone? If we assume that the Decay Spell is directly connected to the Moonstone, what happens both times she uses it? It overwhelms her and she can't control it. The Moonstone seems to be incredibly powerful, with a will of its own, and both times Rapunzel has even come close to interacting with its power it's proved too much for her. My theory is if the sun drop can borrow the power from moonstone, the moonstone may be able to do the same in reverse.

What's really funny is that it's specifically desperate FOR RAPUNZEL. Demanitus himself says that if she doesn't merge with the Moonstone, the black rocks will hunt her for the rest of her life. Fuck, this makes me feel really bad for her, she's kind of gotten a raw deal throughout this entire process. She regrows the hair she thought she'd never have to see again, she's hunted across continents by these Lovecraftian rocks, and she has to somehow master this unfathomable power, which she herself barely understands, if she's ever going to have any peace.
