hehe, i would raise him. hehehe. I would love to raise a kid like that. i would keep him safe. i would keep him safe from the CIA. the CIA won't let me gain a son. they hate me. I would save him from that. the CIA impregnates women to steal my sons
I think we can all agree that Susie was in the wrong here.
(The bitch).
It's karma, I suppose
>shitting up a C&H thread with Preston
Rude.
I know that feel bro. CIA won't let me near children either. They know my love would change this world
reminder to vote for calvin's mom in miss Yea Forums. She's up against some tough competition!
She' REALLY not hot.
karma doesn't work like that you idiot
t. calvin
>posting this shit
>doesn't even hide it was found on tumbler
This makes me inhumanly angry. Like this kid is six years old, deliberately portrayed as immature, and yet remains immeasurably more insightful than the fucktard calling him MRA.
Just admit you have a crush on Susie, Calvin...
It's people like you that push them into my loving arms.
I did my part.
calvin's mom is cute
She is an utter bitch.
>six-year-old is a brat
Color me shocked.
Friendly reminder to physically harm Dobson if you see him in real life.
Letting him live seems like a tough enough punishment to me
Rent free in his head!
I agree. Shortening his life span is too kind. Hurting him gives him enough "reason" to continue.
Best is to ignore him.
Eh. I feel like she does the better job of parenting compared to Calvin's dad; she does almost all of the legwork (even considering that his Dad works as a patent lawyer) and she REALLY gets mad props for being the only parent who attempted to talk to Hobbes.
(No Hobbes didn't talk back, but during the Baby Raccoon story she actually had a one sided conversation with stuffed animal Hobbes and also tried calling out his name during the Yukon Ho arc when he was lost in the woods, thinking he'd respond before realizing what she was doing.)
And as pointed out, of either of them Calvin probably takes after her the most. She was a party animal back in college apparently.
I know media is full of single child homes because writing superfluous characters is hard, but I really wish calvin had a brother or sister
...they had a strip implying Calvin's mom wanted to get her tubes tied (or force Dad to have a vasectomy or something) after Calvin said he wanted a little brother so he'd have someone to beat up.
Yeah but it is pretty much a rule that unless you have a family themed show/strip, most kids are only childs because it makes writing easier.
No. He needs to live a long life. A miserable lonley life where he never gets what he wants and he eventually stops being noticed by anyone. Yes a long healthy life.
...What?
There's a difference between making something easier to write and over complicating things.
Watterson wrote a comic with the specific focus of a rambunctious imaginative kid and his talking tiger buddy. It doesn't NEED to have siblings thrown into this because if anything that would make it more like a sitcom--the genre usually pushes 2-3 kids into the mix for stock plot options and Watterson did just fine telling stories with an only child for ten years. Not because it was easier but that was the focus all along. Besides, Hobbes himself and Susie work as other 'child' character roles in the strip's overall narrative, and Rosalyn could have just as easily been Calvin's older sister or whatever but apart from Hobbes, they aren't central to the storytelling going on.
That is my point though, him being an only child is due to the writing and story not realistic family planning
Would you risk having another kid after the first one turned out to be a hellspawn like Calvin?
Dude, the first kid they had was CALVIN.
I'm pretty sure they're good on kids
Ok fair point
Karma doesn't work at all, retard.
Did someone say raccoon?
Calvin's mom looks good in a one piece
She chose a kid over a daschhund.
Larson >Watterson.

Fuck off, Dobson.
I want to fuck the mom.
For what purpose?

My one goal as an artist is the never become Dobson.
No
Oh jesus
Artist? Sauce?
C E A S E
Don’t even think about it.
DO IT MOTHERFUCKER
I don't understand
Am I not allowed to get hard off of Calvin's mom
funny
never thought i'd see it
i know r34 exists, but its something i never thought to think "i wonder if someone did".
Watterson mentioned in the Anniversary that he was an ungrateful little kid himself, and since then I've always sort of thought of her as his insert/response to 'how would I react if this was my kid?' He also implies that Calvin's dad is based on his own, and a lot of his rants about bicycling and getting an early jump on a day when you could sleep in were just as alien to Watterson as they were to Calvin.
Why doesn't Calvin's mom just beat him already?
there is one strip where she spanks him but generally smacking a kid won't correct the behavior in the long term
The bike strips are all Watterson. They were his lone author-mouthpiece-rant/guilty pleasure
Still, I've grown a serious appreciation for Calvin's mom as I've gotten older. She's prime waifu material
I don’t remember where, but I read that his dad making up bullshit answers for scientific questions was also Watterson. He apparently confessed he wouldn’t be able to resist the temptation to do the exact thing.
a punishment to the rest of us maybe
Why not user? Why wouldn't beating your kids when they do something wrong or shouting at them when they do something wrong work for the long term? Genuine question.
Nobody has any sympathy for Calvin at all?
Wow. I mean, compared to characters like Cartman and Mandy and a lot of the other REALLY HORRIBLE Yea Forums kids, he's almost saintly.
there's been shitloads of research that shows the more physical discipline children receive, the more defiant they are towards parents and all authority figures
and it's really important to remember that kids are basically idiots, so they legitimately don't know what they're doing is wrong most of the time. Smacking them might correct that one behavior, but it's temporary and will send their overall behavior in the opposite direction of what you intended.
One thing that hits me after going back to C&H as an adult; Calvin's life is really depressing. Probably even moreso than Charlie Brown.
Charlie Brown at least has Linus, Schroeder, Peppermint Patty and Marcie who are nice to him at best and at worst don't go out of their way to make his life worse.
I legit wouldn't be surprised if Calvin turned out to be suicidal.
he's too smart for school
>and it's really important to remember that kids are basically idiots, so they legitimately don't know what they're doing is wrong most of the time.
This concept is near impossible for people to understand, which is weird, because everyone was a stupid kid once
Calvin already has Susie, and he's what, six? He's got his entire childhood ahead of him to run into other weird little shits. Not everyone is going to be Moe
>Tom Preston
>taking his opinions seriously
Well atleast we now know how Calvin was conceived but holy shit that's cringe
That would ruin the charm of the comic, but at the same time he absolutely deserves it.
I kinda have half a mind to make a sort of implied-to-be-calvin character if I ever write anything. All grown up and being a rising zoologist. Something really blatant, like Cliff Walterson or something.
>all the way to my first dentist visit my dad tells me about how dentists will drill into your teeth with little drills if you have a cavity and how it hurts even after they give you anesthesia
>on the way back home mom and dad are very upset with me and don't understand why I wouldn't open my mouth at all for the dentist
No im not gonna get angry with this fat lard be right back im gonna read calvin and hobbes
If it makes you feel better they were shit talking Dobson too.
Do It Before our Eyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It doesn't ruin the comic because it isn't in the scope of it, which is honestly what Watterson was so good at. He gives you enough clues that you can imagine out a plausible normal childhood (or a ridiculous one) for him if you want, but it doesn't matter to him in terms of the story he wanted to tell.
They either had really cushy childhoods, or they relate too much and don't want to admit it.
Same here. It's also unfortunate how much more relatable Calvin's ostracism and behavior in turn seems than when I was a reading it as a kid.
thank you
>implied to be calvin character
It's been done, it's called 'Frazz' by Jef Mallett.
Frazz (Calvin) is working as an elementary school janitor, but it's implied that he earns enough as a songwriter that he doesn't need to. There's also an older Susie that he's in a relationship with.
en.wikipedia.org
It's ok for a newspaper strip. The Sunday strips are the best.
I always read Calvin's lines in Howie Mandel's Bobby voice.
So...Calvin then.
You wanna die, you talented yet evil motherfuck??!!
>w-why are they bumping fists?
>not posting the best Calvin and Hobbes strip
>Brobably because of Calvin and Christopher respectively.
Whoa dude!
Someone already did a Grimdark version of grown up Calvin called Spencer & Locke.
It's... different. Not bad.
I have vague memories of this...
Tell me more.
I am going to physically harm you for making me look at this.
This comic but instead it's the teachers at school putting Clarissa on the bus going home.
>Spencer & Locke follows hard-boiled Detective Locke, as he returns to the bleak urban neighborhood of his youth to investigate the brutal murder of his childhood sweetheart, schoolteacher Sophie Jenkins. As Locke is forced to confront memories of his abusive upbringing, he turns to his childhood imaginary friend — a giant talking panther named Spencer — to help crack the case. But when a vicious crime syndicate led by Locke’s father, Augustus, kidnaps Sophie’s young daughter, Hero, Spencer and Locke must overcome overwhelming odds as well as their own traumatic pasts in order to learn the truth about Sophie’s death.
>But when a vicious crime syndicate led by Locke’s father, Augustus,
It sounded cool up until this.
S&L was going so well when it looked like he was going to make sure to not go full grimderp with it but the end of Roach Riley kinda killed a lot of that.
Negative reinforcement trains not to get caught or not at all, positive reinforcement teaches to repeat behaviors. Look at dogs, no dog ever learned anything by being yelled at and hitting also doesn't do much. On the other hand if you teach a dog to do something else other than what you don't want it to do it will be much more effective.
Disgusting.
Post more user, or give a source.
Spare the rod and spoil the child, thus sayeth the Psalms. Beatings are the only thing sin-filled children can understand.
It's crazy to think that he was in his 20's/30's when he did all this shit, and that he's worth 9 figures now just from comics, no merchandise or movies
It looks like Calvin and Hobbes, but the writing-style is completely different.
My dad is exactly like Calvin's dad.
The older I get the more I'm like that too
More?
I think Calvin got his mischievous side from his mother, but got his imaginative side from his father. I remember reading strips of Calvin's dad telling him wild explanations to questions like "why are some pictures black and white." Those strips gave me the impression that Calvin's dad was a very imaginative individual.
This... Is not okay.
Since when do people consider Calvin unsympathetic?
I don't know how to reply to this.
Unfortunately user there are a lot of robots on Yea Forums who grew up with very much worse lives than Calvin.
Personally Calvin strikes me as having had a great life.
The Dobson stuff is funny.
It's not often happy successful people who become political crusaders.
Quite often it's people who had really shitty lives.
When I grew up as a child school life was very painful and by the 5th grade or so I just sat behind the back of the school and waited for lunchtime to pass.
The idea that Calvin's life could come across as sad to me just seems completely alien to me.
Calvin's life seems very alive and vibrant the very opposite of the kind of life I had.
There's a kind of robot personality full of dullness and sinking.
It's extreme is in Chrischan or that tranny phantom guy.
They have no self of themselves only cartoons.
There's a lot of people who are on Yea Forums and would be school shooter types.
Would be but they really are good people at heart even if they've been through very difficult situations.
Anyway I don't know what I'm writing but just these kind of posts by people show up and I just want to tell normies to get off my board.
People who live dobson's lifestyle and make his choices do so out of a deep rooted fear of abandonment. They've been conditioned to seek approval solely from women because men are toxic and harmful. Their every thought and action is centered around womens' approval because the approval of women is directly tied to their sense of self-worth, and to them if they lose that perceived value, they'll be abandoned. He finds no inherent value in himself, only being worth anything if women approve of him, and thus never taking care of himself or finding fulfillment in life, only acting for others
Depending on what kind of person you are you can pity him for it or you can enjoy the schadenfreude, but either way Dobson lives a pathetic, lonely life of suffering and shame
He has a point. Like how Spinel is (you)
Please go on. I crave more.
This comic is actually pretty solid.
Interesting point of view, my old friend.
>Spare the rod and spoil the child, thus sayeth the Psalms.
Proverbs. Why would that be in Psalms?
>daschhund
dachs·hund
>Rove Jansson
The only one getting the rod is you, false prophet
Susie and Calvin's mom are both cute.
>tfw no caramel gf
Even if you're joking, it's really depressing how heavily out of context that line is taken. People think of the word "discipline" and they automatically assume severe strictness or outright threatening violence. Obviously there are times you need to be firm with children, but nine times out of ten proper guidance doesn't involve being a drill sergeant.
>Personally Calvin strikes me as having had a great life.
Yeah, because people mostly remember the more fantastic and colorful strips. They don't tend to think of all the strips focusing on childhood awkwardness and ostracism.
Not saying I don't understand where you're coming from, since I had a pretty shitty time in school too. It's just most people who focus on only one aspect don't remember the strip as well as they think they do.
Calvin is a fucking treasure you shits
What a stupid fucking faggot
Calvin wasnt particularly ostracized ever
>Like this kid is six years old, deliberately portrayed as immature
Sounds like the MRA
He was beat up at school and only has one nerd girl as a friend?
Please no, not like this
Well look at you with your 'friend groups' and 'entitlement to be free from harm', I say he entertained and nurtured himself with the type of creative thinking that creates a Bill Watterson, who based the character on himseld
I love those strips. I want to be like Calvin's dad in the future.
>took a bike to work despite it being really cold already
>ate prunes for breakfast
I'm pretty much Calvin's dad already.
So is that Calvin's dad or someone else?
Obviously someone else, look at the body-type.
This is very vaporwave, somehow.
Not if you’re doing it wrong, no
Remember that time literally every other male in school signed up to play a sport he didn't give a shit about, leaving him alone with only a single person to interact with?
>Spare the rod and spoil the child, thus sayeth the Psalms.
No, it doesn’teth. Nor is that phrase from the Bible at all.
More please, my dick requires it
Etymology
Commonly claimed to have come from King James Version of the Bible, Book of Proverbs, 13:24
>He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
Due to the associated “spoil" concept which is not in the Bible, it more likely came from a 17th-century poem by Samuel Butler called Hudibras. In the poem, a love affair is likened to a child, and spanking is mockingly commended as a way to make the love grow stronger. The actual verse reads:
>What medicine else can cure the fits
>Of lovers when they lose their wits?
>Love is a boy by poets styled
>Then spare the rod and spoil the child.
What is this even supposed to mean?
Hot.
>bike for an hour every work day
>wanted to eat more fruits
... Oh god I'm too young to be a dad.
This one was always so poignant for me, and wholesome. It doesn’t always have to be gag-a-day.
>see this strip weeks ago
>don't get it
>forget about it
>see it again just now
>get it instantly
Why has this not been posted, yet?
Um... yeah? That's kinda the idea
That's like posting a Garfield strip and saying
"FUCK that's an overweight cat!"
Keep it in your pants.
That's not ostracization that's a kid choosing to do his own thing and still hanging out with someone else
>somehow
Dreamlike longing
Calvin had a great childhood and so did you, cut the crap
I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking that the ending of Roach Riley was utter shit
Fine I'll do it if none of you cowards have the spine

Why? Why there is a Dobson tweet for fucking everything?!
Truly, there is nothing sacred to people
I read this comic a lot when I was younger
>"You see, Calvin, getting cucked builds character!"
MRA have the maturity of children? Of course this fails when comparing them to Calvin since more than half the time Calvin is pondering something insightful.
It's hard. Kids are really trusting.

I’d do more, but the system would mark it as spam
it's literally edgy Calvin and Hobbes. He was raped by the Rosalyn stand-in, and the Susie stand-in (Sophie) sold drugs to kids.
there is no right way to beat your kids
The very OP calls him a "fucking brat".
The strip in the OP, taken on it's own, sure. But place in the context of the Moe strips (where Calvin is physically assaulted for no reason) and the strips where first graders are tested on Newton's laws of motion. If you had to deal with that, wouldn't you hate going to school too?
Wait, that can't be Calvin's mom, the videocamera is way too modern.
What's to be sympathetic about, he doesn't really have any major suffering?
I remember that strip killing me as a kid.
>She was a party animal back in college apparently.
I think user is thinking of that time Calvin referred to his mom as a bimbo based on a prom photo. Although that would put her in high school, not college, unless colleges had proms 30 years ago
and possibly conflating it with his dad wearing a Party Naked shirt in college
What's the sauce on this, too?
Why is no one dropping any goddamn sauce in this thread?
The color palette doesn't hurt either.
Now that’s content I haven’t seen posted in a long, long time
You know, I never read Calvin and Hobbes. I always would go “meh” and just move on- I just never felt it.
Sometimes, it even seemed like it was self-congratulatory.
But even I, from my partially antagonistic stance of it- can recognize that what Dobson said here is disgusting, I am insulted for something I never even cared about, because I’m not that much of an idiot.
holy shit I forgot how much I missed Carnivale
>rule34 requires that all technology be relevant to the era that it was created in
Well, yeah, if they want me to take it seriously.
You don't call getting the shit kicked out of him and ostracized "major suffering"?
What do you consider major suffering? I suppose that you don't sympathize with Charlie Brown either.
No, 6 year old playground bullying is not major suffering.
M-mods?

I've heard of low bars for considering yourself a success, but I've never seen one that's subterranean.
What are you talking about? Getting picked on sucks but it's not the end of the world.
I always hated the way the other kids reacted in this story.
...Yeeeeeaahhh.
Calvin can be bratty and is altogether selfish, but within the context of the strip, it's more that he lacks understanding rather than empathy to a fixated degree. You know, like an actual child.
For example, he has somehow learned a skewed lesson that "childhood is fleeting; adulthood is forever" and for a 6 year old is REALLY bitter about that. So he refuses to see the point of school so despite showing a capacity to learn and a vocabulary that rivals a college professor's; he meanders or ignores any lessons and attempts to "make" him learn and in general if he doesn't understand something he complains to Hobbes or tries to do shit on his own terms like pretending to be an alien, a dinosaur or putting on his Superhero costume to (fail to) ace a test...
Or he once just ran the fuck out of the building. I feel like every kid has wanted to do that.
But while he's badgered Susie alot, he displays empathy towards things like the environment, Hobbes, his own mother when she got sick, and felt bad about...okay maybe one or two things he's done at Susie's expense, but if he was an MRA shit, he wouldn't have *ever* offered to play Calvinball with Rosalyn during her last story arc.
Calvin's parents are so milquetoast that they were high school sweethearts who made it through college.
There’s one strip that I doubt I’d be able to find. It’s his mom’s statement “how can one kid be so stupid and so smart at the same time”. Which is a decent summary of the kid in general.
Pretty much. Calvin isn't getting anything out of traditional parenting or schooling, but he's not an actual special needs kid either.
He needs to get over himself/stop being so selfish, get motivated to apply his smarts and he'd make something of himself.
Has there ever been an arc of Susie trying to teach him? I don’t mean one-shot strips where she gives him the answer to a question, I mean something like that fuckfest with his dad’s quarters.
There was a time when they were forced to do a group project/report about the planet Mercury and ...to be honest, it wasn't that great a story. He fucked around, she did more than her share of work and scolded him for his fuck ups and was utterly bewildered that Calvin didn't give more of a fuck about his education.
Something similar happened in an arc that started where Calvin had entirely forgotten to make an insect collection for a big project and Susie just stood there asking how in hell he had forgotten/not cared about it as Calvin ran around in a panic. The arc eventually turned into a story where Calvin kept getting her into trouble until she finally just told the principal her side of it and Calvin got into trouble.
I'll find you fucker
i had a bunch of those big hard back books of calvin and hobbs
the fuck is the bear?
oh jesus christ who didnt have that he man womens hating club little rascal shit when they were six?
So technically, sexualizing Calvin's mom is sexualizing Watterson?..
I have Revenge of the Babysat, Attack of the Snow Monsters, The Things under the bed are drooling, and the essential collection.
That would be the Dobson guy everyone keeps mentioning.
He's a former inflation porn artist who tried to go legit, only to turn into a preachy and whiny self-proclaimed art-guru who gave people bad advice while routinely cutting corners with his own art.
Actually, Wattterson mentioned being a very mild-mannered kid. He wasn't like Calvin at all.

It's hot.
What do you think he does all day? Draw comics? Theres no time for that, virtue signaling on Twitter takes all his time.
yes YES YES
I just wish someone had the sauce.
You got it wrong, physical discipline has a higher chance of making kids more defiant. Not because of the discipline itself, but because if you screw up and smack them for misperceived wrongdoings or you start making up new rules on the fly and smack them because of them, that has a 120% chance of the child's trust eroding.
What that means is when you have a moment of weakness as a parent like getting unreasonably angry, physical discipline has a much higher chance causing mental problems for your kid than other forms of discipline. Grounding them or taking away their toes for a wrong reason is still something you can talk and make amends with. Hitting them for the wrong reasons only makes them fear and resent you.
Ok, the /r9k/ one made me chuckle.
Godspeed user
>It's evolving
Gotcha covered.
>this is still up
Also you are taking the "MRA shit" at face value from a fat manchild with mommy abandonment issues. Men do have legitimate complaints about how they're treated by society. Don't be fooled into accepting Dobson's retarded strawman.
Its Dobson, he's nearing 40 and he's brattier and lazier than Calvin.
>taking away their toes for a wrong reason is still something you can talk and make amends with.
it requires quite a lot of reconstructive surgery though,
katie shanahan actually wrote a comic with a sort of calvin-esque protag:

Excellent work, Nonny. Mission accomplished.
It took me a couple minutes, visits to other threads, and a couple more IQ points to figure out what this was.
Why is Calvin's hair brown?
Oh shit. I didn't even think about it at first but it's going to be his "blond kids bullied me a bloo bloo bloo" shit isn't it?

I don't want to see him get cucked, but I also want delicious caramel pron.
>Or he once just ran the fuck out of the building. I feel like every kid has wanted to do that.
I did that in elementary school. I got chased down by a cop and put in zip-tie handcuffs at age 7.
They later put up fences around the school, apparently because of me.
I went to school before school shootings were a thing and knew of a hole in the playground fence back near the treeline that a kid could fit through and just bail out into a rich white neighborhood.
It was very tempting but I never tried it. Kinda wonder if it's still there, but I have my doubts...

Can you imagine what the interviews with this genius will be like in 20 years?
Good question, Satan. The answer is simple.
Never because it looks like Sentai is dying. They're unironically on their last, make it or break it season right now. If it isn't a runaway success, Sentai's done. They've already started folding its budget and a few of its ore popular gimmicks [mecha] into Kamen Rider, which is also toning down its toyetic aspects because going insane with the toy shilling was part of what killed Sentai and was hurting KR.
