the show's definitely more cynical than it is sentimental, though I think 'cynical' is too strong a word to describe what most of the humor and messages are. there's enough heartwarming moments to go around, but at the end of the day Mao Mao is still a hardened egotist and Badgerclops is a still a sassy bitch. I don't think all the cynicism is supposed to be "hip" to the audience either, as the adult protags clearly have their outlook on life warped by their family issues.

It's cynical not just in how the characters act, but the setting as well; Pure Heart Valley is reminiscent of Carebears and MLP, but the citizens are fucked up and the "pure heart" (which their religion seems to revolve around) is making bad shit happen. Going in this direction to is always more hip and cool than the alternative which is playing it all straight and good like you'd expect it.
Mao Mao being open about his daddy issues isn't cool at all and there certainly is a cynical cool guy way to spin a story similar to the one we're getting without sacrificing much coolness. For as hardened as he is, he still finds time to be sentimental, naive, goo-prone, and generally pathetic.

But you could also use the fact that all his attacks are light based to say that he's a Paladin of Vigilance/Vengeance (can't remember it's name) using his powers and skills to cure a corrupted society and protect the weak in rather extreme ways (writing a ticket to a KID!).

If we are allowed to use UA then we could say that he's of the Technomancer school of Wizardry (from the Modern Handbook), using existing tech or a single piece he built to his advantage.

Bad news, user
Mao follows easy to read colors while being simple to follow in terms of complexity. His attire is basic enough to look functional but he isn't a generic human as well considering his anatomy makes him like an actual cat rather than just a human short stack with a cat head on top. Throw in a little samurai warrior edginess that isn't cringe worthy but taken to be over the top and you have a character that can maintain appeal universally.
Its a good show. The characters are likeable and the set up is like Darkwing Duck. It isn't rocket science.

Yeah, there's this thick layer of emotions in most of the show that becomes more and more clear as you watch it. The main cast deals with being lonely in different ways and they don't shy away from telling you that they ultimately don't want to be alone. Most don't verbalize their motivations as to why they want to hang out, but really it's often just due to loneliness. Mao Mao and Badgerclops are unlikely friends, but they cure each other's loneliness.
