Microplastics and industrial waste are the problem, not straws. The straw meme literally came from a 10 year old.

A friend of mine deepfried one once. The arms and legs are pretty tough, really gamey.

a restaurant near me did the "plastic straws are bad" thing and got rid of them so now instead they have these large awkward domed lids that are still plastic and use more plastic to make than the straws they previously used so they are generating more plastic waste

They get soggy pretty fast, and there's a bad aftertaste. Also, this move away from plastic straws is apparently pretty unpopular with certain disabled people who rely on plastic draws to drink. The whole thing could be more easily solved with more emphasis on recycling, and even so the main threat to ocean life, and the majority of the plastic waste in the ocean, is cast-off fishing equipment. Basically, straw bans are a bad solution to a small part of a problem to make people think they're solving it while refusing to confront large commercial interests like fishing.

Honestly though, it doesn't particularly matter what plastic waste gets generated. As far as I'm aware, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, the overwhelming majority of oceanic plastic waste comes from several rivers in Asia and Africa as well as a single river in South America with effectively 0% coming from anywhere else

Ergo, if you live in a first world country then the plastic doesn't end up in the oceans and it doesn't end up inside Turtle's noses.

Meanwhile, stuff like plastic straws are easily recyclable and cheap to produce energetically whereas paper straws aren't.

So, from what I understand it is not only of no real benefit to sea turtles to switch to paper straws, but it's actually a detriment to them and all other creatures because they are more inefficient in terms of production and recycling. If people really cared about wildlife, the environment, and climate change then they would fucking force developing countries to stop throwing their fucking trash into rivers and recycle it like civilized people.
