I'd say that's pretty true. Honestly if you watch the entire series I have no idea how you could come to the conclusion that she isn't extremely insecure. Jane is super cool and I like how they made Quinn not just a shallow idiot for the whole series.
I didn't have much of an idea of what to expect but I was really glad I bought the DVD set. It's ridiculously cheap, I got the whole series for only $13. The music was replaced which sucks but it's still a very enjoyable series.

I guess it's kind of a relief to know the show was always like that and I don't have to hold my breath for Daria Restoration Project: The Good Version™.
It's a really weird way of doing the music. Compared to something like Clone High where the licensed music was prominent and played a huge part in the show's identity, Daria just feels like they crammed in some popular music wherever they had a spare couple of seconds just because they were MTV.
It almost feels like whiplash when they start to get into a good mood in that casino boat episode and they start playing "What's My Age Again" but then stop before the vocals even kick in. Or in that episode where Jake and Helen's old hippie friends come to visit and they play like two seconds of some Fiona Apple song.
