It's all because of John Byrne. The Avengers treating Vision like a human, and his marrying a human woman triggered Byrne's autism so bad he had to destroy everything, and the editors let him do it. He couldn't think of Vision's life as having any value, so he wrote the Avengers as considering Wonderman "the real Vision", later writers like Busiek, Remender and Gerard Jones all doubled down on claiming they were very alike, no Avengers writer allowed Vision to assert his individuality since Jim Shooter in the 1970s.
It was also a way for Byrne and writers that followed him to push the boring Wanda/Wonderman ship because if they say that Vision and Wonderman are exactly the same, it means they can write that Wonderman has always been in love with Wanda, and say that she already loves him, she just doesn't know it yet. Poor Wanda doesn't get a lot of agency in these stories.

Y’know, the more I read old comics, and Slott’s run is more inspired by them that then MCU schlock they’ve been peddling for the last decade, it seems to me that Stark has a LOT of pent up anger. He’s got the kind that just boils over time. The corrosive hate inside that is turned into focus and drive. Roy Thomas was writing Avengers and wanted to bring back the Golden Age Vision to join the team, Stan Lee, who was his editor at the time, told him to create a new android hero instead, Roy made him a new version of Vision, and gave him a connection to Wonder Man to give him ties to the team's history, and set up a rivalry with Grim Reaper, who had recently introduced. It used to be an important point that Vision was an individual, and was not Wonder Man, nor anything like him.

It all went wrong with Byrne, 30 years ago, but it's become institutional within Marvel. The Wanda/Vision pairing is one of the few things where the comics rejected movie synergy and fought against it. Even their Disney+ series won't change that.
