The problem with his music is he probably most likely makes his music based on how it SHOULD sound good not by feeling. I imagine he's in his million dollar studio combining chords that in theory should work together or melodies that sound "correct" on paper instead of what actual musicians do and that's by playing what you feel is right. He's like a nerd that takes an assignment too seriously or is scared to do something that is breaking musical rules or that is "technically" not supposed to work but does.

So what exactly separates this guy from the thousands of other "one-man-acapella" fags in existence?

Music theory should always be used in service of the music, not the other way around.
