What went wrong? Why did it fail compared to the first?

It came out in 2019
The first didn't need a sequel or expanded universe, simple as that. The simple de vision to make a second one is where it went wrong
Whoops, meant decision
Lack of marketing.
Also it was kinda shit, no amount of context is going to excuse the fact that the entire lego world was reduced to an apocalyptic city, that's just depressing man.
It's a really bad year for animated movies, save for Toy Story 4 everything was a box office bomb
It's a really bad year for anything not made by Disney but it's also the worst year for WB in like ever
Detective Pikachu may not have lived up to the hype but by no means was it a bomb
I'm talking about animation.
Detective Pikachu isn't animated you fucking moron and it was absolutely a bomb
not enough bonkles
I enjoyed it, but didnt think it was as good as the first. Also suspect it relied too much on references kids (the target audience) were never going to get.
>and it was absolutely a bomb
It was not. It made back over twice its budget. And in any case, nothing Pokemon related ever truly bombs because the merchandise covers every cost.
I love that this is so fucking weird and doesn't even touch on the prologue.

It’s not about dads like all the other LEGO movies
It was another case of making a sequel to a story that neither needed nor invited a sequel. The ending stinger to the first movie was just that, a silly idea. The first movie literally said everything that needed to be said.
Also they poisoned the well in between TLM and TLM2 by releasing the extremely shitty Lego Batman and Lego Ninjago movies.
Just posting best song

Super Cool > Everything is Awesome
A Mad Max parody already felt dated
Tbh we might have actually dodged a bullet on that one, if the bonkles were originally intended to just be ebil henchmen
Lego Batman was okay.
Ninjago was a turd.
Reverse that and you got it right.
I didn't really connect with it as much growing up as an only child and I was raised on Mad Max and Fallout so Apocalypseberg was right up my alley and I was disappointed to see it go.
It's a shame because the show is actually pretty cool but they completely fucked it up by rebooting it. I can't even fathom how bad a Chima movie would be.
They were worried about casual moviegoers being confused by an already long-running narrative, completely missing the fact that only kids who have watched the show would even WANT to see a Ninjago movie. It's not like the name "Ninjago" has some mythic nerd appeal to it like "Batman", or even a more general audience appeal like the Lego brand in general. The only people wanting to see a Ninjago movie on the big screen are kids, and those kids already know the core rules of the Ninjago universe.
And then the movie they go to see just casually changes all of those rules and throws in a bunch of jokes aimed for a prospective adult audience, all of whom are only there because their kid nagged them to.
It's really the biggest case of missing the point you can possibly do with a thing like this.
I think Lego has some properties they could dust off for a good movie.
lol no
Toy Story 4 released? I've heard nothing about it since the trailer got buried by Detective Pikachu's.
It reminds me of the Penguins of Madagascar movie, which for some reason just sort of tries to apply the tropes of the cartoon to the continuity and characters from the Madagascar movies instead of just being a movie of the cartoon
Were you living under a rock this whole year?
>I'm a pathetic fucking moron with no life and is too fucking scared to leave my Yea Forums hugbox
“Grown man calls another grown man a moron over argument regarding children’s movie for babies”
Indeed
I loved Knights Kingdom as a kid. Thought I never bought Jayko as a king. I figured it should be Santis
Apparently so, but nobody else I talk to has ever mentioned it. Even the ones who love Disney.
The script wasn't as good and you lost the surprise factor of "hold on, that's actually a kid playing".
Although you gain making the entire movie up front about an angsty preteen trying to deal with his own toxic masculinity and accept that it’s okay to play with girl lego
>it’s okay to play with girl lego
I know it's fiction, but at least give it some basis in reality.
What's so special about girl lego anyway? It's just Town/City but pink all over and with weird minifigs that make feminists upset.
Don't worry user, I had no idea as well.
Girl LEGO is more simple and more for looking pretty
The whole "everything that's happening is just a euphemism for children's imagination" thing was stupid. And those kids were annoying and took up way too much of the movie.
Relied on real world too hard
Mom and bananaguy was the worst parts of the movie
>mom steps on lego pieces twice and compares it to childbirth
They reaaaaaaaaaaally overdid it with the "adult" humor.
>Lego movie fatigue after shitting them out year by year
>no one even wanted a sequel
>the style of self referential humor and "thank god this ridiculous thing didn't happen - shit, now it just did" stuff gets on your nerves by now
>some of the more clever and unexpected things from the first movie like the micro build scenes with someone going "vroom vroom!" in the background getting lazily recycled was just sad and disappointing to see
>Catchy Song is annoying and misses the point of Everything is Awesome
>it's basically the blatant toy commercial that people expected the first one to be
>no real nostalgia bait for adults and the brother vs sister plot wasn't particularly appealing for people above 12-14
what is she?
It felt like the budget got sliced in half.
The first movie had a larger cast, far more impressive things built, more locations and way better action scenes.
The comedy and writing were both weaker. The meta layer was borderline incoherent. The lego story and the meta story didn't thematically gel. The entire plot seems to hinge on the children's parents being incompetent and not acting like real people.
It felt like they tried to take everything from the first film that people liked and turn it up to eleven. But just stuffing more and more shit in makes the film feel unbalanced.
Everyone thought it was just a cash grab sequel
Released after too many other spinoffs to the same broad franchise, removing sense of fascination and dulling expectations
Advertising campaign and reception was not strong and misconstrued expectations of the film
Poor year for animated films in general
Female Clayface but Lego
>extremely shitty Lego Batman
bait
Enough with the fuckin LEGO movies. The first one was mind blowing and new. Batman was fun and meta. Ninjago should have killed the LEGO movie franchise for good, so it is now a reanimated corpse in the form of ‘The Second Part’. The magic is dead, stop it,WB.
Yes, I know there’re going to be a second Batman, whatever.
The first half of lego batman was good but the second half was painfully bad
FPBP
I wanted to go see it but it came out at an awful time
I am a simple man, I say the reason is:
FEMINISM
Sequel movie that wasn't better than the original movie. Totally lacking the "Oh wow it's a Lego movie" appeal. Marketing got flubbed in America.
...And that's it. Pretty much any answer that looks like a nitpick is a nitpick.
After Ninjago shat the bed they should've kept the budget under 70m. Instead they decided to spend 99m.
like the ben 10 thing?
Best girl
