I honestly didn't mind that whole original part of the movie. Yeah Batgirl was kind of an idiot but not a bullshit comedy idiot, a normal kind of human idiot.
The whole thing was a good 80's time warp with the gangster with the boat and everything and the sex might have come off as bad fanfiction in a way but felt more right than a lot of weird fanfic ideas.
I had more of a problem with Gordon's VA not going apeshit enough during the appropriate scene and of course the ambiguity of the last scene being lost.

I never really liked how Timm shipped Bruce with Batgirl. Their relationship is better with Batman as more of a mentor figure. Bruce is for Wonder Woman.

Timm grew up in a generation that shipped Barbara with Bruce but by the time he got to write Batman the Dick/Barbara shift was created. But when it comes on shipping I would like to see Bruce/Ivy failed romance

Batman is a Mary Sue type self insert for him, you can have a self insert without them being a Mary Sue and sometimes they can even be good characters if done with care. The most common self insert type characters are the dork/losers types like Doug for example.
