What are your thoughts on Scott Snyder's Justice League run? I admittedly dropped out early on because I didn't care for his interpretation of Legion of Doom. Which of course kind of bummed me out, because I was happy to see the team return. Then there was that weird Morrison thing he was doing with Perpetua and everyone just saying DOOM all the time and it just lost me. Maybe it's because I was hoping for something a bit more terrorist organization simplicity instead of all this world/universe ending obsession Snyder has like his Metal event.
What are your personal thoughts? Love it, hate it, indifferent, talk about it. Moreover, what are your personal desires to see in a Justice League book? Because it feels like very few writers seem to get concept right.
It’s decent, has some cool moments, I just feel he’s doing too much, you know?
Angel Martinez
his metal run was pretty cool. but introducing perpetua when there is already a cosmic history is fucking stupid. making her the mommy of the monitors when theres already a fucking beatiful history to the monitors. jesus christ what the fuck was he smoking. how on fucking earth are you going to have this super ultra powerful person and not even have her defeat the justice league or be in fights. like whats the point of her even being their(i know the whole building an army story) .this whole story is fucking retarded
bring back dominus for god sake that would eb a better story
Scott Snyder has a bad habit of having too many ideas and just throws everything at the reader all at once. That and he can't write endings worth a damn. I did sort of keep tabs on the book seeing if it was worth jumping back into but ultimately he just can't calm the fuck down >ANOTHER light spectrum just to get Sinestro back into his old pjs >Legion of Doom serving some huge cosmic creator/destroyer called Perpetua??? >"Apex Lex" while also shitting on J'onn in the process Which I feel hypocritical shitting on that last point when I like Brainiac Lex from JLU. Maybe it's because the latter felt more like Lex improving what he always cherished most (his intellect) while the other just seems like a DBZ upgrade so he can serve another master.
I think it's incredibly stupid, even by superhero comic standards, I wish it would fuck off and stop tainting the rest of the line
Christian Mitchell
I like it, but it feels like it tries too hard to be epic.
Colton Murphy
It's okay.
David Reyes
Better than any other main JL title in the last decade. I still don’t like it though.
Sebastian Gomez
start reading it again with the time travel arc, good jumping on point and the storytelling got better
Lincoln Sanchez
Honestly I enjoyed Priests JL Run, the overarching story was a bit meh but the standalone stories in the issue were amazing. Like the issue with The Flash stuck floating in space trying to figure out how to run to the satellite.
Lucas Hughes
It was a mixed bag for me but I did like that issue
Adrian Fisher
I can only enjoy it if I'm high
Zachary Davis
>I think it's incredibly stupid, even by superhero comic standards This.
I've just been getting the issues with Jimenez on art ( like image related which shows both how great his art style is AND how fucking stupid the writing is. )
Jesus that text box just sounds so OC fan creation >So like the Ultraviolet Lanterns have the biggest corp in the universe and totally shit on the other ones Fuck off with that. Also I know it's just to get Sinestro back in his old threads, but you couldn't even remain consistent with the uniforms since everyone else wears a logo.
Yellow costume was better anyway, and had a better theme
I love it and I'm alone and I don't get it but whatever
Gavin Lee
Jesus, Scott what are you doing?
Jayden Kelly
Alright so he's making 7 forces of creation and 7 opposite forces to counter them? He's trying to be both Morrison and Johns at the same time it appears. This just all seems like convoluted bullshit to me.
Well more like 4 creation forces, Speed Force, Emotional Spectrum and I think Life Force was a thing before him.
Cooper Moore
Well yeah of course. Snyder is channeling Johns what with his 7 theme now.
Easton Jackson
From what I understand, the seventh force is kinda like the current status of the world/universe/whatever. Like, normally there's more Justice than Doom, so that's good, but if there's suddenly more Doom than Justice, then Luthor wins. That's why he sent his message to the world about how the heroes are a bunch of retards and Doom is the way to go, that's why he faked his death and is now giving gifts to villains all around the world, to tip the scales.
Wonder what it feels like to be on the other end of that.
Julian Phillips
This whole thing just seems like a stupid idea to me and feels like Snyder unable to commit to exploring a single concept/idea
Luke Davis
It convinced me Snyder is actually three 8 year olds in a trench coat who want Morrison to be their new daddy. Unlike most people who make this comparison, I’m not actually complaining, I know it’s objectively a child’s idea of storytelling but the novelty of a big crisis comic event reading like a saturday morning cartoon is keeping my attention.
Not that I want it to become a trend, especially when Metal was already leading into this direction, but man if Snyder wants to bang his action figures together and scream about his OC powers and characters which are like the originals BUT EDGY SO THEY’RE STRONGER MOM then fuck it-I’m not complaining about this wild ride. Y’all talk up the golden and silver ages like they’re some sort of silver cow when, let’s face it, they were exactly as dumb as this.
Kevin Rivera
Anybody else read the one shot for sinestro? Where he makes tiny sinestros with the UV light and they go into Giant's immune systems and convince the tiny repair people to become complacent and hippies?
Julian Turner
I’m convinced at this point the 7th justice force is going to be Superman. Just...Superman himself as a concept, like Superman Beyond from Final Crisis dumbed down into “We need to power our rayguns with Superman”
Ryder Bailey
There's a right way and a wrong way to do this dumb fun shit though. Snyder has only proven that he's equally terrible at writing both sides of the coin. Furthermore, I wouldn't even compare this to Silver Age. Russell can write fun goddammit.
I did! As the guy who made the post about comparing this to golden/silver age silliness I feel like a lot of the side stories will be really pertinent to that comparison. Like the Riddler oneshot where he’s hanging out with King Tut and Lex’s “gift” to him is just explaining he’s squandered his life chasing a manchild’s fantasy
Luke Nelson
Maybe it's because I'm relatively new to comics but it never occurred to me that this story was somehow too stupid for comics.
Julian Gonzalez
Oh god, he is so gonna use the Thought Robot on Lex’s Final Form
The key thing here is that Snyder didn't write that one shot, Russell did
Dylan Martinez
Good, I was sad nobody was talking about it while shitting on sinestro
Leo Diaz
You know, that’s fair. I got into comics from Hellblazer, The Sandman, The Books of Magic and other Vertigo stuff then lost a lot of faith in superheroism as a concept because of a lot of big time Marvel events, so the idea superheroes can be lighthearted and whimsical on paper is kind of catching me off guard
Robert Ortiz
Nonono, you’re not thinking like Snyder. See, he said that all the Monitors are just fragments of the original Crisis Monitor, and Superman punched out that guy’s brother. So what’s going to happen is Snyder’s going to “reveal” that Superman is somehow STRONGER without the Thought Robot, like it was some sort of anime power limiter he’s stronger without.
Charles Lewis
Thank you Scott
This and GODHEAD, together with the WOKE PROPAGANDA movie version of the New Gods wrote by SOIBOY King, finally put a nail on Jack Kirby Legacy in DC.
Now Bendis can Finally Piss on Kamandi/OMAC without concearn
Kirby's Fourth World is woke propaganda. The only reason you don't see it is because there are not enough brown/black New Gods.
Hunter Hernandez
Hitch was better
Jack Kelly
>tfw Darkseid IS canonically the only New God that matters anymore
Anthony Johnson
WOKE PROPAGANDA in 1960's =WOKE PROPAGANDA IN 2019
Sure buddy Sure.
Sebastian Johnson
Him and his Scott's OG daughter
James Flores
His own daughter, you mean.
previewsworld.com/Catalog/SEP190517 >even being hastily written out because editorial mandate set Cheetah as Diana's designated doom nemesis can't stop Grail from coming back eventually
Isn't it really? Again ignoring that there aren't enough racial new gods.
Michael Cruz
The one thing I'm enjoying out of all this shut is Deathstroke because Priest, even though he's on his last arc of the book, got pulled into this shit and it's still working really well which is pretty impressive
Asher Evans
I’ve enjoyed it quite a bit, one of the few ongoing I read every time it drops. While it’s certainly not perfect, there are a few things I enjoy about it. It seems self aware enough to recognize that it’s kind of silly, but still stick to its roller coaster like pacing. There’s been some great banter between the leaguers themselves that humanizes the interactions. One that really sticks out to me is right at the beginning of the run when they are all telepathically making fun of Batman’s corniness and Jonn makes fun of Batman for his pre prepped moon explosives. Also for me, this is the type of scale I look for in a justice league book, especially when it’s close to the founding ,embers. This is a collection of quasi gods, if they aren’t saving existence why do they even need to be gathered? Yeah the perpetua thing isn’t the greatest and he kinda runs roughshod over some established canon with the monitors but things always change. Morrison changed a lot when he made his works on the monitors, not that Snyder and Morrison are on the same literary level. Also, the perpetua thing hasn’t even really fully played out, we are still very much in the lead up to her being the active big bad and I’m sure there will be more regarding her past and motivations that mayo prove her storyline. Overall, I think it’s funny, the actions great, the art is beautiful and there is an epic sense of scale I really appreciate. May not be for everyone but I’m really enjoying it.
Joseph Murphy
how is it acceptable that Snyder barely writes half of it wtf is he doing is he lazy as shit
Robert Roberts
I think you articulated what I meant when I said I don't mind that Snyder is basically writing a saturday morning cartoon hopped up on anime better desu
Adam Gray
It's hit or miss. There are a lot of really good moments, like the Superman punch and the Jarro issue, but the rest of the time its just hyperbolic, DBZ-levels of cosmic villain powerwank that just ends up bloating the supposed stakes of the story until you feel conflicting detached from the story. It doesn't help its full of a bunch of silly retcons that didn't need to be there, like J'onn's secret history with little Luthor, Perpetua supposedly being the mother of the Multiverse and the Monitor and Anti-Monitor are her sons, or shit like Starro's name being derived from the planet he comes from, shit like that. It's not like he couldn't have introduced all the concepts and lore he wanted and needed for the story without shitting over existing mythos of existing characters.
Xavier Ortiz
It really says something about the comic that it's biggest "hit" moments seem to be the ones where it goes full anime. The Superman/Jarro issues are probably the most famous, but I also liked how the Umbrax attack was resolved with Flash, Cyborg and J'onn getting everyone on Earth to do a Persona-style accept yourself moment even if the reasoning and follow-up of Earth becoming a fucking temp White Lantern were atrocious. I feel the reason we're in a lull at the moment is because Snyder is trying to set up the final battle so we have nothing but lorelorelore and also team gathering.
Also if we're going to talk about shitting over existing mythoses, let it be known that Sinestro, Grodd and Cheetah are retroactively responsible for bombing Pearl Harbour.
Brayden Nguyen
dropped it before it even came out because of that shitty post metal event which could have been great, can't remember what it was called. Those things broke out of the source wall
Gabriel Butler
It's shit. Snyder thinks he's Grant Morrison, but repeatedly fails at having the talent and creativity to pull it off. Nothing has substance, all big twists and turns are dumb and add little to the plot because you have no reason to care about anything that is happening. Thebook relies too much on fan service and superfluous cosmic babble to explain the plot and it has no impact. Retconning J'onn and Lex to have been childhood acquaintances is a stupid and unnecessary change that only exists because Snyder wanted to retcon Lex's father to be part of a secret cabal for a lame twist.
The only people who like this are the kinds of low IQ folk who get distracted by shiny things and mistake flash for substance.
Austin Garcia
It just further cements the fact I'm not a fan of the 7 coming together in a regular ongoing. Morrisons JLA didn't hook me and I love Final Crisis and the Bat-Epic. I love smaller scale JL books like JLI and teams with C-listers like JSA, as well as when the JL come together for Crisis' etc. but the day to day JL team being the 7 just does nothing for me.
Hell the only JL book in recent memory I actually liked was Priest but it would've been 10x better if it wasn't the 7.
Tyler Harris
Damnit
Mason Carter
Threadly reminder the problem with JL books is that DC acts like its only made up of 7 people. Take a page out of JLU's book and just have a constantly changing spotlight of characters that not only keeps things fresh but also doesn't require world ending threats EVERY arc
Russell is really putting in great work. DC better give him bigger titles and lock him down because he's putting out their best comics right now.
Elijah Wood
lol I forgot that Cyborg was part of this book for like 2 and a half issues
Dominic Wright
Did Russell write anything else lately other than Wonder Twins and that Riddler one off?
Luis Jones
oh come on
Leo Mitchell
It has some cool moments but it's boring me. I have to finally accept that DC truly peaked in the late 90s/early 2000s.
Josiah Kelly
Should the 7th not be the Source?
What now?
Tyler Myers
The only good thing to come out of Snyder's League is Starro and Jarro
Carson Long
This and Jimmy Olsen. The Silver Age is making a comeback.
Juan Young
Easily the best Justice League run since Kelly. The three JL books are really solid right now, almost makes up for Batman and Superman being shit.
Grayson Kelly
all three of the books suck right now, get some standards
Luke Morales
Isn’t he represented by the Superstructure?
Gavin Roberts
Based. Can bring myself to read something that's basically just Snyder outsourcing to Tynion
Jaxon Thomas
All three are way better than any JL book post-N52. It's cape work you cunt.
Wyatt Roberts
It's just Scott Snyder snorting Grant Morrison's Big Book of Ideas.
Christian King
That’s not an achievement. Quit lowering your standards because the bar is low
Cameron Ortiz
I’m enjoying it just because it’s the first comic in a long time from the big 2 that just feels like a Saturday morning cartoon, in both the best and stupidest ways possible. I’m also not reading any other dc comics besides Green Lantern so overlapping narratives isn’t really a problem for me yet. That’ll obviously change when they do the hell arisen thing I guess but it’s pretty contained for now which is nice for a story that feels like it was pitched as a huge event
Evan Reyes
He wrote that Sinestro issue
Jason Morales
and? its still complete dogshit no title with Justice League in it is good besides the original International
Jacob Miller
Snyder has some cool ideas from time to time, but aside from Metal, none of his universe or reality level threats ever seem to really matter in the grand scheme. That fact just makes his stakes feel weak.
Gavin Cox
SHIT! I should pick that up then. I love Russell. That's all Snyder has is; ideas. He's an idea man that can't coherently organize and present them in a good or meaningful way
Brody Phillips
He wrote the Sinestro and Riddler one-shots, he's also gonna write the Harley Quinn: Villain of the Year one.
Andrew Reyes
His metal run did the exact same thing you're complaining he's doing with Perpetua - shitting on past, even (in the case of Metal) shitting on current canon, mainly because he can.
He's like one of those dogs that even when he has no more piss to come out, raises his legs and tries to mark over some other dog's territorial markings so Snyder can just go:
MINE MINE MINE MINE
It's why I didn't bother reading Metal past those points (which thankfully came early on) and haven't bothered with No Justice/Justice League Super Friends version 14.0
