the cat that inspired garfield is dead
I love him so much I bought his house.
He's a smart businessman.
Garfield may not be a very good comic, but the world is a better place because that man sat down every day for thirty years and churned it out.
Garfield was honestly never a good comic. This guy just changed his little character to be cute so girls loved to buy shirts and mugs with his face.
he fulfilled the prophecy
Garfield was the Ctrl+Alt+Del of the pre-internet era of comic strips
I liked the comic as a kid.
Dad bought me some of the collections. Hardly remember any of the strips now.
What's insane is that despite how soulless modern garfield is, it's still not even close to the bottom of currently running syndicated comic strips.
Things are beautiful because they don't last, user.
well no shit, the strip is over 40 years old
Gene Simmons of comics
his son ripped off someone?
>why don't you skinny people just stop breathing?
He really hates skinny people, apparently.
is garfieldeats.com coming to your town?
I was really into garf when i was young.
I bet he voted for Trump.
I'm happy that he's been able to make a living off of his creation. I have fond memories of reading collections of his comics and watching some of the television movies based on his works.
I am jealous of his success and would probably sell out just as fast if not faster if given the same opportunities.
If an arab oil prince loves your character a little too much and wants to open a restaurant themed after it, how can you say no?
I think about this every once in a while.
He probably feels overwhelming gratitude to it
So that's the guy they shipped Nermal to?
Motherfucker set out to make something he could merchandise the shit out of and succeeded tremendously. The fact that he actually bought the character from his syndicate and owned it himself (via his company, PAWS) is impressive as all get out.
I'm kind of bummed Viacom owns all his stuff now (much like how I'm kind of bummed Viacom bought TMNT from Peter Laird)
Isn’t Pence a huge Garf fan?
The real deal with Jim Davis is that he's the creator of Garfield.
He's in his early 70s, married, and currently resides in Albany Indiana.
Thanks for asking!
This.
And these. Anyone who is unironically upset with Jim for intentionally creating something with mass appeal and selling out is pretentious, you’d do the exact same thing given the opportunity.
why can't people who actually do GOOD things buy properties up
I'm upset that Garfield merch collection at PAWS ended up being divided and sold off. Sure on their own they're barely valuable tchotchkes but all together they were like a massive totem to Garfield's pop culture commercial presence.
CAD is more offensive to humanity and our intelligence than Garfield. Garfield is merely banal, but CAD is shockingly lazy and atrocious in its mediocrity (and Fuckley is such a miserable prick, whereas Jim Davis seems laid-back and self-aware by all accounts).
I wonder where his pipe is
His run on Galactus was a really good time.
There's no doubt in my mind Jim Davis is a smart man. He is capable of anything... to me.
>Isn’t Pence a huge Garf fan?
Yes he is.
i like garfield, that is all
I undersneed that reference!
That sucks. Should have been the basis of a Garfield Museum for Muncie.
I kinda wanna see someone make Garfield say terrible political shit now.
These Halloween strips add a new depth to the strip. Not because of that dumbfuck starving Garfield theory, but because they prove he’s capable of writing legitimately interesting stuff with beautiful detailed artwork, but chooses to never do this and instead write basic jokes in a flat setting. If these didn’t exist, I’d think he was a talentless hack and think Garfield is pure shit. Because they exist, I think he may be the most intelligent cartoonist to ever exist. A pure capitalist with no shame
Random yet semi-related aside: I visited China a few years ago. I saw people wearing Garfield merch fucking everywhere. I even saw a billboard on a clothing store where they photoshopped Jon and Garfield to be wearing the stores clothes. I asked the guide why Garfield comics were so popular, and she said “nobody reads the comics, but the chubby cat is cute”
I like how he fully supports Garfield shitposting.
He's awesome. Pulled a long-running comic out of nowhere by just imaging his cat having a personality and way of life other than laying around all day and it ended up as a loved cartoon.... and a mediocre movie as well as a shitty one. BUT BILL MURRAY so that is nice.....
That’s pretty interesting
He wanted to make a sellout comic that would finally pay the bills, something so milquetoast and middle-of-the-road that everyone would like it, and he did.
I respect him as a businessman and a fiscally responsible adult.
He's fucking based and if it wasnt for him you'd all be reading Heathcliff
The opposite of Bill Watterson.
>sell out
What do you mean 'selp out'? He's an illustrator, a worker. He draws the drawings that people want to see, is he supposed to be writing about crystal gems in some alt-publication? He's an effective person who chose a job and did it properly, this idea that he gave up some treasured creativityis ridiculous, Jim Davis is a normal man doing a normal job for normal people. I just struggle to understand was you are trying to lament here, Davis' career is absolutely ideal and is basically the results of mentally healthy decent decision making, so its somehow annoying if someone is wishing be did something more 'punk' or 'personal'
He gave me Garfield.
He seized an opportunity to work easy and earn big. Then he apparently got to focus on his real passion project: U.S. Acres.
I say good on him
I guess I'm a little bit neurotic about people who complain about Garfield, because its a really earnest, straight shot at a succesful comic, and asking people not to do that completely undermines the craft
Did you get the doctors to check you out and set you up with a course of antiretrovirals?
Did you send that chair to Abu Dhabi yet?
No because when Davis wanted to be serious, he actually made some good stuff (the Alone strip, Garfield's 9 Lives).
honestly, dude did excellently in marketing and getting money from Garfield and I can respect him for that.
Kinda dig his older work, but now don't really care
Still find it hillarious that he signed on for Garfield Eats

Look at this senile old man not having any fucking idea what he's doing
>the Alone strip
This shit started creepypasta fanfiction and "lost episode" trends.
