It was about a loser girl getting in with the popular kids by helping the alpha bitches forge some hall passes. This was thrown into array when the mysterious brooding cute boy transferred in. They have a sudden romance, and decide to kill the popular kids. And then it all goes downhill.
In 2014, it got a musical that was pretty goddamned good.

It all started with Hamilton.
Hamilton was a massive success and sent a whole generation of tumblr kids into an animatic frenzy. That entire musical can be seen storyboarded in multiple artstyles on youtube.

The "bigger" animatics creators of Hamilton would then jump into other shows to create those animatics and more people would follow them. Heathers was the big second musical after Hamilton.
