I really don't understand it. Are they trying to get into cubism or some abstract shit? I just have no idea how this kind of thing develops. Her(?) work was actually quite good, years ago, but almost immediately after getting into Calarts their work began deteriorating. It's only continued since then. They draw these stick figured clowns and portly, disgusting elephant men, and call them trans and claim to be the best artist in a fandom without a hint of irony or self awareness. And they only get more and more deformed each time she puts pen to paper.

I genuinely wonder if there's something genuinely mental going on. Not psychological, I mean actual degradation of brain matter. Something has to go very wrong to move forward like this and not once ask yourself "does this actually look good? Did I maybe take a wrong turn somewhere?"

Some teach that certainly, but Calarts is the biggest offender of teaching you how to make your art marketable first and good second. And animation studios are looking for a very specific type of artist right now.

I've been wanting to try out a more painterly style honestly. In my opinion, Scurry has the best art in the webcomic world period and there are a few other pictures and artists that really inspire me too. My current style isn't terrible, but it's kind of bland and I'm always trying to make improvements.

Looking at most of these it feels like these artist are picking very intentionally ugly features to put onto their characters. I would say that's in order to make them recognizable but I do feel like there's this weird notion of "body acceptance" attached to it. It feels like OP's artist is always the one that's ragged on though and most of the other examples here weren't great to begin with. The nose and cheeks have a lot of blood vessels and thuse are usually red or rosy. The forehead has fewer blood vessels and reflects more light and so it closest to the skintone or yellow.

There's a speed benefit to animating more like the right side, because simple cylinder and ball shapes like the fat thighs, or tricks like the shoulder spikes obscuring the top of the shoulders, mean the characters can rotate smoothly without having to very accurately recalculate the perspective.

This speed benefit saves HUGE amounts of time and is part of why the story elements of animation are getting so much better recently, especially compared to the Hanna-Barbara and early 2000s period.

When you can afford to scrap stuff if it's not working right in terms of story or pacing because redraws are quick, you can focus on telling a good story rather than use up all your time fucking with perspective grids and making shoulders not look janky.

Not really. Hold up the worst examples of a genre style and you can make any animation period look like absolute garbage, pic related for Disney. Most people agree Adventure Time and Steven Universe are good examples of the genre and look quite nice.

The funny thing about CalArts criticism is that most of the style is just a repackaging of 1930s art speed optimizations from the rubberhose Fleischer era, pic related from BBoop.

A huge part of this was trying anything more ambitious was likely to fail due to tight production schedules.

There's nothing wrong with the results this produced, and I'm a sucker for shows like EEnE that owned, with 100% confidence, that they just wanted to make a well-made funny show kids and adults would enjoy, but you can't even pretend that today's animators aren't trying much more aggressively to take on much more ambitious stories and harder themes in their shows, regardless of your opinion of the politics and themes on offer.

If the options are shit animation with a shitty pretentious story of good animation with no story, then I'm going to chose the latter every time.
I won't deny that what today's animators are trying to do has merit, but if you lack the skill to do so adequately then don't get pissy when people shit on it. I'm not saying they shouldn't try, God forbid, but I'm certainly not going to suffer through it just because it's "new" or "innovative".

Representational art was In High demand for illustrations up till the advertising industry (biggest buyers) switched to photography. Many art schools shut down. The ones that remained adapted and pushed less representational art, chasing students from moneyed families who wanted to be Warhol. They started letting anyone and everyone in and many people were more interested in the lifestyle and image of being an artist than learning traditional skills. Those students grew up to be teachers. Changes in employment standards mean schools can only hire people with degrees precluding many talented people. Many links in a chain of artistic pedagogy were broken.

Xamag did actually go to art school. It was like an art magnet when she was in middle school or something (whatever the Russian equivalent is). She claimed she didn't think it helped a lot but I think it did given her skill level at her age. Russian art schools are supposed to be legit. I suppose without the structure her art was more influenced by what she saw online.

This isn't progression or regression because every drawing is rushed as shit. No time or decision making was spent on any of them and the artist clearly just rushes these out

I see this argument a lot, but I have yet to see this translate into better animation on tv in the past decade of shows. A few special episodes of Adventure Time and Steven Universe looked great, but they were by guest animators who could make any design look good. The new TMNT cartoon looks great, and those designs are by no means simple and not what most people would consider CalArts.

I get the value of streamlining, but I don't think that applies in most examples here. Good animators are eloquent in their drawing, not ugly and sloppy.

The reason you won't see it is better is a value judgment of results, this stuff's about faster, which is a different axis based on how quickly you get results.

These quicker results allow more iteration on things like the writing, and higher time investment on the episodes you actually want to make special, which is where you'd expect to see the results.

I understand the logic, but I'm not sure I buy this. Those are problems that get solved during scripting, storyboarding and whatnot, and that's not done with fully polished drawings.

You know, I'm saying this as someone who actually likes the designs in Gravity Falls, Steven Universe and the like. But even within this style, things can be well done or poorly done, characters can be appealing or unappealing. I just think you're giving too much leeway in this regard and excusing all kinds of shoddy work.

When any step on a list of steps goes from taking 100 time points to only taking 70 time points, even if the problems you're fixing are getting fixed in pre-production, you now have time to make those pre-production fixes, because you can count on having 30 more time points to safely spend on them.

Because the thread's going to page 10, I'll save you the long post about how I believe industry standardization of art styles does in fact cause improvement, because work output is more reliable and predictable, and on the net the speed and consistency tradeoff has positive expected value for results on both art quality and story, but I recognize that's way more touchy-feely.

He actually stopped doing the fishlips a few years ago. Empowered is pretty good. He too fell a bit for the "realism good" meme but all he did was give his characters slightly more realistic body types, and they comment on it on page.

He's switching to full digital now because his hands are shot, we'll see how it goes
