Fireman Sam is the greatest cultural export of Wales, though I'm confused about the 'controversy' surrounding this. A regional fire service... had Fireman Sam as a mascot... and decided to remove the mascot his relevance has become strained. What I didn't gather is 'Fireman Sam is cancelled', 'no more new Fireman Sam', etc - which is what people appear to be claiming.

Sam's definitely an icon. Has been since his debut in '87- most young firemen aren't afraid to admit that their hero growing up was Sam. Same could be said of Postman Pat, really.
Of course, nowadays interest in such shows have waned- funnily enough it began to set in around the time they switched from stopmotion to full 3d. Which could also be said of Thomas the Tank Engine, though that wasn't stop motion.
