When i am not working on comics, i Like to take my girls out bike riding! I'm so happy that i got my bike back, I got some awesome footage of some really weird back paths and abandoned cabins this summer!

The story is about a young girl who is thrust into the world of Transients (think Mutants) when her own aberrations manifest. She must then confront the problems and dangers that having these powers presents for her societally and personally.
The story is set in a near future where Nuclear Holocaust was barely averted, and individuals can have their lives destroyed should they spontaneously turn into a TRANSIENT.
I am trying to capture the spirit of the X-Men prior to them being merged with the rest of the Marvel timeline. The story works much better if they truly are an equally threatened and threatening minority.

This is great! I'm going to canonize this as taking place after Percy and Cole's fight in the story. What happens next gets described in Azu vs Fishergirl--Percy teaches Cole's gang to harness their latent telepathic powers through operating Queenfisher together, Cole gets brought up on aggravated assault with a humanoid vehicle charges, but Percy argues leniency and she gets off without any jail time.
Percy has Cole do community service at the Sanderson thermosphere base (Power of Stardust issue 2) figuring that Cole's aeronautics background will make her of use to the scientists there. Cole's gang are now Fishermen, and Cole can join up once her community service is done. She'll have to learn the Queenfisher's telepathy system from her underlings--which will hopefully curb some of her ego.
Cute! It's surprisingly chill just watching two dogs on a walk through scenic locations.

Cooking could be fun! Thule cooking is very interesting--a lot of the food is raw. A funny story that happened to Percy and Stopwatch--when they were children and Percy was over at Julie's house for the first time, Percy mistook Julie's fishbowl as a candy bowl. Julie cried when she saw Percy chomping the heads off Ariel and Flounder. She called Percy a freak and a monster, Percy cried, and it took a whole week before they were friends again.
It's a common misconception in the setting that Thule cuisine got this way because they can't start fires underwater--this isn't true, they can. Thule cuisine favors the raw because food has been hard to come by in the Nepot Ocean--its hard to compete with Leviathans, so Thule had to eat every bit of what they killed--even the unsavory, disgusting bits--and eat it fast before the leviathans showed up. Eating raw food is also part of how they develop an immunity as their eyes passively screen out pathogens.

1. She's not going to break bones just to hear Azu submit, she's not like that, especially when can just hold Azu in the air with telekinesis. Azu on the other hand IS like that.
2. As much as she would hate it, she's willing to swallow her pride to avoid serious injury. Enslaved, she can still turn the tables on Azu later or escape. That's harder to do if she's injured. Azu on the other hand has an obsession with her pride and would rather die than submit.

As far as I know Fishergirl is the most overpowered character of the tournament along with Dee. Im glad this is just drawing a pic or so because I cant really imagine a way for Azu to get through that eye thing if its always activated. Maybe she could kick her really high along with the entire thing and jump on the same level for an advantage, but thats it. Id imagine her legs would break though but she can heal that.
Pretty much. That said, Azu can and will run away as a last resort. She just wouldnt grovel. Also, to be honest, the entire existence of superheroes as a concept would really piss off her since it means there are powerful people trying to make her accountable for her actions.

djinn are just demons. they're OP as fuck, but they fear allah/god. they can be sealed up or summoned/controlled if you're as badass as suleiman/solomon. Basically if you're writing them into a story, you're trying to write something (like Aladdin) that is supposed to be BIG. it's going to try to inspire huge possibilities in the mind of the reader.
You want to write a smaller story? I dunno. Use a half-genie Or hell, the original Aladdin, the genie of the ring was a lot weaker than the genie of the lamp. He was a much more minor djinn.

Genie are OP because their classical Aladdin's ring set-up makes them a plot device and their mythological set-up makes them fallen angels with powers comparable to that of Iblis and Allah. They're powerful both in concept and in execution. Pic very much related. The canonically strongest JSA member wasn't the wrath of God and it wasn't the guy with the Lord of Order in his helmet, it was the genie attached to the dumbass.
You weaken them like you do anyone with cosmic powers--you impose caveats. Johnny Thunder's Thunderbolt needs to be told exactly what to do otherwise he can't act or does the wrong thing.

The reformation of the Sky-High Sentai would be a nice subplot and fits with the rest of Percy's rouges gallery. Her series has a strong redemption theme (insert Steven Universe joke here) since her family is involved at all stages of the criminal rehabilitation process. Percy's a parole officer, her mother is a therapist, and her brother is a prison guard at a prison called the Sandcastle (because its made out of telekinetically strengthened sand and ran by Thule).

Sounds good! But don't worry about imposing power restrictions unless the story calls for it. The Arabian Nights stories didn't have limits on what a genie could do simply because the stories never called for the genies to go up against a limitation.

I fucking love discussions like these I always go with unified world concepts that file djinn under the greater family of fairies, and that would make them vulnerable to iron.. except that, just like regular wingy-goaty demons, they're able to make their bodies so smoky that they can't really be TOUCHED by anything, so that weakness becomes irrelevant. Meanwhile I don't know if Disney invented the idea that ANY container (not just a magic one) can trap them, but it makes a lot of sense. It's hard to reform your body in a way that's strong enough to break out of a bottle while you're inside it, compressed down, jumbled up.

Just to explain the ref, they accidentally made the year longer by moving the earth further from the sun so instead of fucking up the calendar they just said the extra 7 days would be Robot Party Week similar thing with the heeb calendar, those extra 5 days didn't belong to any month (I wanna say there are 9 months with 40 days each) so they could keep nice even month lengths but, unlike the arabs and their purely lunar calendar (right?) the dates wouldn't shift over time. That way you don't get that retardery of ramadan falling on a different time from year to year, the holidays would always be roughly the right time of year.

The text story mentioned a Thule diner in the big perisphere thing (like a superhero community center?) so it seems to have some appeal at least in Otto's setting.

This is probably my favorite character design you've done. I just adore this whole Dark Pilgrim aesthetic. He is very understated compared to the more bombastic costumes the others have, and that mask is just so perfectly solemn. I assume he is a religious figure from what i gathered. I like that he isnt a typical knights templar or priest. The pilgrim is a cool twist.

Alright here's page one of my giant story that I'm terrified to post about. I've gone back and forth so many times trying to figure out how to start this thing that I just needed to do it. Ideally I'd like to have the comic flow like how the TF2 comics do where you click to make the panels advance and change but I'm not really sure how to do that just yet. I'd like to set up a site to host it on, but I'll probably post these on my Newgrounds for now. I don't even have a solid name for it yet.
Those types of motion comics are common enough that I would bet solid money you could find instructions online for how to code them, or even a 'maker' for them

WIP on new Tad Danger pages. Getting back to business as usual Im setting up a B plot for Rex. He gets all the shit jobs Tad doesnt want to do, and I get to introduce recurring villain soon that I am excited for.
Got a more finalized design for the Cannonbrawl. I went with the humanoid design mostly but added the claw hands. Its quite a bit harder to draw, but i think they will look quite intimidating when they swarm. it also makes them look more fragile which is something i wanted.

I'm not at home right now, so I don't have any pictures to share, but does anyone have some tips on character design? The main character of the comic I'm sort of working on is a cat. She's a witch's familiar and right now her fur is a solid gray. I thought it would be cute if she was really self conscious about not being black or white, which make for much better familiar colors, but actually drawing her she does look a bit boring. She wears a red collar/choker and has eye shadow, so she's not completely featureless.
I was thinking maybe going tabby cat instead, but it's a bit difficult to draw the stripes. Any other suggestions?

solid colored cats become visually interesting via shapes and body language You could cheat the tabby thing by putting in only a few small markings that represent the whole coat, depending on the style of your comic.

Tabby cats usually have a "M" pattern on their forehead. You could get away with drawing just that and it'd add for an interesting visual as well as a nice Witch's familiar pattern.

Maybe a darker grey pattern on her body? If I think a character design is boring, i usually find something completely off the wall to just toss in there and see what happens. Like my character Rex. He was just another guy with a pompador, so i tossed a tooth pattern on there and gave him a chompador. Perhaps you could do the same with cat. Like a dark grey eyeball pattern or maybe its tail looks like a witch's broom, maybe its hears sit straight up and come together at a point to look like a witch's hat. You just need to find that little je nais sais quoi

Thanks, those are both good tips. I'll mess around a bit when I get home and can draw. Doesn't have to be anything too complex to keep her recognizably a tabby cat, so it might still work. Sounds like it would be a good excuse to try a more digital painting style too, though I think that might still be a bit advanced for me.
Yeah has it right. Part of her concept is that unlike other witch's familiars, which are actual magical animals, she was just a random stray her owner picked off the streets. Having her not even look very witchy plays into her insecurities a bit. And, of course, adding in some flaws and insecurities like that makes for a more interesting character.

I appreciate the concern, mate! No worries though. I'm not going to burn myself out. At least, I'll certainly try not to. I'm well aware of Inktober, too. In fact, my FasutFall mini-comic specifically consists of 31 panels, so it's my alternative approach to Inktober. I thoroughly enjoy making comics, so I don't expect to get bored. It's usually an issue of pacing in my case.

I don't know how useful this is, but switch often between a brush that'll just color with whatever you can eyedrop in the area, and a brush that you can switch to shit like 'multiply' and 'add' to just lighten and darken, so you can fix the lit-ness of an area you've already carefully shaded the textures of, and don't want to ruin. I find I have to think of the shadows and such totally separately from the overall 3d shape of the object (like in this case, the ship) so that's at least two completely different lighting processes, overlapping each other.
I'll have to practice. That undulation is a bitch to make look convincing. I know flamberges aren't actually two handed swords, but I think it looks sick.

Here's a fun idea, next time you're sketching out something with mostly geometric shapes, take advantage of the fact that you'll be drawing on a new layer from the sketch bit. Make lines connect that should be parallel, such as drawing one big rectangle for both of the skull's eyes, then subdividing it into squares. That way, later, everything will be nice and even.

I think the one on the right here, whose eyes converge on the nose, looks a little weird for that reason, but otherwise is a fine variation. yeah seriously what kind of file system is that these are not very pretty these are really cute and I think the point of Cyborg 009 is that they were all the best cyborg except for half of them. kinda looks like you're combining them at this point. also cute. getting perfect at this point whereas I think these go in unpleasant directions. the sloping face, not fun. these are uggs... yeah most of the rest at this point aren't improving any. I think the nail was hit pretty well in the first ones. Except I've never been a fan of oversized gigantic cartoon mouse ears. Real mice have tiny ears and that's why they're cute. I don't think there's any real favorite here, just this is a good artist and can be trusted to ultimately eventually get the designs right.

That map probably represents the surname that each county has a larger percentage relative to the rest of the country or something like that. There's actually a decent variety of names there, so you could certainly draw a few from it, but it would seem fake if all of the characters had had the Smith/Jones/Johnson/Miller thing going on. American surnames don't cluster nearly as much as most countries - less than 1% of Americans are named "Smith". For comparison, something like 7% of Mexicans are named "Hernandez" and 7% of Chinese are named "Wang". Most Americans are actually descended from German immigrants, but their surnames tend not to show up on these lists because they're more likely to have developed alternate spellings (i.e. "Petersen" and "Peterson"). Basically, you'd be better off looking at a top 1000 list rather than the top 100. BehindTheName is a good source for these things. surnames.behindthename.com/top/lists/united-states/2010

Anyone got some good coloring and shading tips or tutorials? I'm not too unhappy with my lines now, but my coloring is still just 'select area, fill with color' and my shading is 'mostly transparent black, blur the edges a bit'
Honestly, I'm okay with any style at this point. I just did a couple pictures that I really like - one's just a pinup and the other's a fairly complex scene - so I want to take a couple days just using them to experiment with a few different things. The more tutorials you've got the better.
That one looks pretty good since the first four steps are what I'm doing now, so it's just adding more instead of having to redo everything.

I think staying away from rpg style character pages is a good idea. Hell, I think character pages should be as minimal as possible. They may not even be necessary, but I wanted to iron down designs and costumes before moving forward. Explicit expository descriptions are pretty difficult to get people to read, so i thought I'd try some oblique primary source excerpts. Short and sweet. I have to keep reminding myself that no one other than me cares about this sort of stuff at all--for now.

They can be fun, but I think the problem is an overload of needless information. If you're actually doing some kind of action adventure the RPG-esque stats can be kind of silly and fun, but once you start to get further removed from that and into other genres, stuff like that becomes absolutely needless. Just a short paragraph or a couple sentences for a character bio, and maybe their relevance to what's going on is enough.

Of course. Only thing I ask is that you get his personality right. I like to think of him like an elephant. He is a gentle creature, until suddenly he isnt. He is rather temperamental. He usually only rampages when threatened. His main problem is that he is just really freaking big, and he can get claustrophobic. Gurk tends to keep him more even tempered. In story he is a tourist attraction admired from a distance. Also, like Godzilla, he does not eat people.

That's kinda what i wanted to play with in my story. There are lots of kaijus but their personalities and intelligence varies just like in the old showa series. Drak is fairly intelligent. Probably about as smart as a dolphin. Gurk is definitely as smart as a human, but he is very childish and hyperactive. Goreya Destroyastein is a practicing attorney. Lots of kaiju are productive members of society, or at the very least, gentle giants, whom may accidentally cause destruction. However there are just as many good old fashioned giant death machines out there as well. Thought Bubble being the prime example.

I really wanted to keep her in a Gwar shirt but I figured copyright stuff might bite me in the ass one day. Her mother, despite being a respected bigshot lawyer, is a gigantic metalhead and tries to dress her daughter accordingly. Contrasts well with her husband who despite being a giant monster man wears a sweater vest and listens to Hall and Oates.
Yeah I definitely want to reuse those designs for something. Maybe make them her friends or neighbors.
A girl wearing a box-shaped mask who inherits a shitty supervillain organization after her dad dies, and they try to take things over and shit. Pretty basic concept but I'm not going to make my first comic a big ambitious thing with 10k pages of lore, I think this is okay to start with. I want to learn a little more about paneling, perspective and backgrounds before I start but thanks for at least showing interest, here's a quick sketch of the main character.
Question for you more experienced webcomic people, how fast should you be able to draw your main character from memory? How fast should you be able to draw in general?
Fun fact 2: Azu is clearly ridiculously outmatched unless we go with Otto´s tournament rules about them not being able to use the eye. Ill just ignore the actual fighting because If I dont ill have to draw unsavoury scenes of broken legs.

As many as you want. I post two per update most of the times unless I feel the plot doesnt really progress at at with them. Normally people post 1-2 per week, although it varies. If you want your comic to appear on the feed you need to release a new chapter, so the usual is to post 1-3 pages as a new chapter each week.

I like it! I love how Percy's hairstyle keeps changing based on the artist. The short hair is cute and goes well with her tomboy personality.
I think I might make it a thing that Percy likes to change her hairstyle a lot. She can't do much to change her clothes because Fisherman pride, but she can change her hair all she likes--so she does. Percy is a tomboy, but she's still a girl.
Only thing I would do different would be to have the kerchief fly off to show the power of the choke.
The unspoken rule of superhero crossover fights is that the power levels are like the points in Who's Line--they don't matter.

In the text story I'm writing, Percy and the Fishermen (One of the things Fishermen do is serve as security forces for multiversal travel due to them having experience with teleporting to other worlds going all the way back to the 40's when the Navy frogmen version of the Fishermen hitched a ride on a teleporting German U-boat and found Thule and the Nepat Ocean) accidentally travel to Azu's world where Thule eyes are on the fritz so Percy has to deal with Azu hand-to-hand.
It's sort of like all those episodes of OS Trek where the technology just doesn't work on the planet after they beam down so Kirk has to rely on polish hammers and drop kicks.

Every single person will have a different answer. Whatever suits you better. Just try to keep an schedule and practice and you'll realize for yourself.
Since I have no actual pages, my goal is to deliver 14 panels per week. Altough sometimes I make more to progress the plot to a certain point.
Her hair is something I wanna fix actually, I did a design of her during my work and I liked it way more. Ill try to change it for my actual piece.
I was actually curious if you were writting Azu how you were gonna fit her, since Cole makes sense, but Azu lives in fantastic ancient-not!japan/europe. Thats good to know. To be honest its the opposite there though, with the Eye powers Azu has pretty much zero chances against Percy, but without the Eye I think Azu has all thats needed to win. Or at least I take it that Percy doesnt have any super-strenght nor holy weaponry.
Then again I repeat myself this is just for fun so all those things dont matter at all.

It took me a second glance to realize it was a flashback, but I think your transition kept up with the spirit of the comic and theme of the current story. Pretty good first attempt. I'd keep working with them if you feel concerned about them though.

By principle Azu isn't actually cruel. If she considered making you a servant it would mean she sees no threat in you which means she doesn't hate you. So, I don't think she would do anything more than having you around and using your services. Maybe headpats around the throne if she feels condescendent.
