I've read Bennett's Josie & The Pussycats and it was an absolutely marvelous comic. With that in mind, allow me to say this:

Whoever thought it was a good idea to debut a RWBY comic with someone as great at writing dialog among women as Marguerite Bennett and then NOT have that comic be about the actual team RWBY but about the time they split up instead, so that the actual main characters of the story never even get to say a word to each other should be fired. RWBY already has so few instances of the girls just bonding with each other, here you have someone more qualified than ever before to do just that and you fucking blow it!

I'm still going to buy these comics because they are cheap and I want to see RWBY succeed and become the biggest thing on Earth but man, fuck this!

I thought the comic was going to focus more on Ruby's journey with JNR, but it's mostly flashbacks and her talking about Summer. It feels odd that she speaks of her so much all of a sudden. She barely even mentions her in the show. Feels strange we learn so much about Summer from a "canon" comic. After 6 volumes we barely know her except she's basically Ruby but an adult.

I'm bothered by the number of flashbacks. If the time period they set the story in requires that many flashbacks to have engaging content, then it's likely they shouldn't have set it between volume 3 and 4 when almost nothing was happening with the cast. RWBY is fun because of the team dynamic, so choosing to set the comic when the team is divided and depressed is a very obvious misstep.
