The Mewman vs Monsters changed from a "The Strip Vs Freeside" style conflict where monsters are violent (Lobster Claws's episode) and uneducated (Buff Frog being illiterate and Boo Fly bragging about how evil BF was to the other monsters) due to the harsh circumstances of their life to dindu nuffins. It made the Mewman vs Monster conflict a lot more black and white (and thus boring.)

Eclipsa usurped Star's role as the main character. She should have turned out to be evil or at least chaotic neutral.

The generals in 2016-2017 were the best times I had on this website. I miss those days, back when Season 2 was airing. Season 3 didn't feel exciting at all and kinda blew all the wind out of the series for me.

Eclipsa was a mary sue and Star stopped being fun.

Star wanting to destroy magic.

Star's plan to stop Mina's rampage and plans of genocide against the monsters by destroying magic itself logically implicates that this very act is itself an even bigger genocide if Star goes through with it, given that there are millions if not billions of beings made of magic in the multiverse. Entire episodes have been designated to showing characters made of magic; the Spells, the Magic High Commission and beings like them, and everything and everyone that lives in the Magic Dimension for a start. If Star goes through with destroying magic, she will presumably be killing all of them solely to save a portion of her country. In this moment, she became just as morally reprehensible a character or even the most notorious of all Mewni royalty whose legacies burdened her this whole show.

On that same note, Star is very, very lucky that Meteora didn't just turn straight back into the same adult from season 3 finale.

Look, I've watched Sugar's work. Steven Universe is often lumped into "the s 0 y trilogy" with this show and I honestly find that unfair and insulting to Sugar.
To call Star Vs. the Forces of Evil "farcical" would be to undercut the sheer magnitude of bullshit it employs. Plot threads that arise only to contrive one another. Hundreds of pages of nigh-endless, retconning lore that establish a lot of important, but ultimately pointless worldbuilding. All to justify the most interesting character spending most of his screentime lying in wait only to job to a Super Saiyan butterfly.

I mean, not to call /ourgirl/ Daron Nefcy a hack or anything, but her magnum opus just feels needlessly cryptic and tone-deaf. Don't get meme'd into watching it, it's Gravity Falls for people who hate fun.

I mean that I think said writing on the wall existed in S2. I thought while it was airing for the first time that it was obvious they'd break up early in S3.

I get that people liked Starcuck stuff, I did too, but I just never got the impression the show was going to have Jarco last all that long. Again, I do think S3 sucked, but I never believed Jackie was going to be an incredibly prominent character going forward and so the relative lack of her later doesn't surprise me.

Both seasons had interesting ideas and plot lines that are abruptly thrown into the closet and never shown again.

Nobody believed Jarco was going to last, but nobody knew it was going to get killed so anticlimactically after having a season to build it up. And that's what Season 3 did and big reason why is killed the threads here.

Nah, I remember the threads being awful as fuck during that period. Everyone turned against Nefcy and there was little to no OC, greentexting or drawfags taking requests.

To be honest and to be fair only Rhombulus deserved to live.

By which I mean that seemed like a better plot and had room for more interesting twists. Ex. Eclipsa and Globgor and even Glossaryck's motives are still somewhat unclear, Star has to rebuild Mewni, the actual conflict is still centered on Star. Even room for a good vs. evil showdown between Star and Eclipsa, with Star being incredibly skilled but having weakened the kingdom and Eclipsa being similarly skilled but limited to the wand. Like, tell me the revelation of Globgor's name and Marco asking Star "What did you DO?" as Eclipsa fucks off with the wand didn't feel like the crew (falsely) trying to hit ominous notes for a conflict that never came.

Obviously there was never any question of Star doing things any differently, obviously the writers wrote it one specific way and obviously they knew during the finale that Star had given up the kingdom even though IIRC most of the audience didn't. But I doubt people would've remained quite so hopeful during the gap between S3 and S4 if it had been confirmed then that S4 would be about Star playing all-purpose servant for Queen Eclipsa and that's literally it.

I'm not saying every single time they spent together Tom was the bad guy, just that I can name a few different instances of him not seeming to care much about Star's instances and so it wasn't a one-way street of Star being awful.

Ex. Star is having her monster integration party she's spent months on, Tom knows how important he is, and when guests are literally vanishing he's literally like "lol calm now bb, they're probably fucking, like we should do, now."

During Booth Buddies, which I'm not trying to argue was a cool thing on Star and Marco's parts (though both instantly regretted it), Tom is barely paying attention to Star before and after the kiss. This was also something it seems Star invited Tom to since it's for her servants, so it just seems like he's not interested but is neither telling her that nor engaging with her much.

In Is Mystery when a bunch of monsters have, once again, vanished from Mewni after the clusterfuck of Mina's attack on the temple that Tom was actually present for, he once again doesn't give much of a shit about how worried Star is. He keeps asking her if he's better than Marco, and then tries to compare their relationship to the plight of the monsters just to get an easy kiss from Star in the end. There might be more examples than these three; these were just the first to come to my mind.

So I think they were both pretty bad for each other, and I can't say Star was "entirely at fault," let alone an emotional abuser. Star tried to talk to him about stuff she cared about a lot in S3 and he blew her off.

Did she avoid talking to him in S4? Yeah, but there was precedent on his part and Star was also in a really shitty situation. It's a good thing they broke up, then, but neither one was really a victim.

Tom also could've just manned up and ended it with Star as early as Lava Lake Beach. I think he could also be blamed for staying involved if he was unhappy with it for that long.

Yeah that's one of the things I liked best about the first season. He was the Safe Kid and did a great job as the viewer's way of into the world of the show from the everyman's perspective.

Then you could call of some of what's seen as Star's poor treatment of Tom as just gags too.

I wouldn't say all of those are played as jokes, though. The Is Mystery one especially is obviously trying to illustrate Tom feeling insecure compared to Marco and to show that the whole Tomstar relationship isn't perfect or on incredibly solid ground. I also don't think it's coincidence that the episode in which Star and Marco kiss specifically has Tom doing other shit to the point that he doesn't seem bothered at all by Star being gone, when they could've just straight not had him there (it's not like him being at the event played any role in the revelation of them kissing).

I don't think it's a coincidence that even if those scenes were played for at least some humor (like damn near every scene in the show), they all follow the exact same pattern of Star trying to do something she's interested in with Tom or communicate her feelings/desires beyond making out and getting essentially ignored.

Also Tom totally could've taken an interest in the monsters being gone, in BOTH cases, while still leaving opportunities for humor. Like, he fights Mina in Monster Bash and helps look for the monsters that have left Mewni anyway. Obviously him not seeming incredibly interested in Star's cause initially, when literally anything else could've been done for a joke, was written in for a reason (that reason being: Tomstar's not a great relationship on EITHER side).

I always just assumed that the last time he had made the shake must have been with Star, which is why it was good... but then I realized the only other time he mixed cereal into a shake was in the 'awesome feeling' montage with Tom in the "friendenemies' episode. This suggests that they have not only the same taste in music, but same taste in food.

On the one hand, giving the viewers everything they want is the very definition of predictable. On the other, giving them the opposite of what they want in order to subvert expectations has become cliche as well.
I know that we weren't going to get an ending that was perfectly impactful, exciting, funny, and gave the viewers closure on every open plot thread. But seriously, There really is no excuse for the rushed, shitty final episodes that we got. With the bare minimum effort Cleaved wouldn't have been half as shitty, and they could have better justified the destruction of magic. With a little effort and some better budgeting (omit the poney head and dragon cycle eps or at least cut them to b-plot) and you could have had an additional 30-40 minutes of animation time to give us a proper ending that isn't rushed and terrible.

If nothing else, and I will mention this in every thread, I see because it goes to show how little they cared about the final episode; there is 1 tiny thing they could have done and it would have cost virtually 0 dollars, no animation changes, no re scripting of voices, just a single scene that could have used some recoloring. Like literally I could do this change in 5 minutes in any video editor, it would cost nothing, and can be done in post. The change? When Mina gets to the wells, recolor the magic water from gold to purple. That's it. Do that one change and it would signal to the viewer that even if they got Globgor and the other glow wounded monsters to the healing pods they probably wouldn't be healed. The only way to remove the glow wounds would be to destroy the realm of magic.
It would make the outcome just a little bit more justifiable to some people.

On the flip side being on Yea Forums when the prevailing theory was that the series was going to end like His Dark Materials was fun. The threads were powder kegs and you could strike sparks anywhere.

I prefer the fan theory that Star just reset magic and it will come back because that's loads better than the face value ending. I loved the cute and perfect stuff but I also loathed that we only got one episode of it when we could have scrapped the pointless quest buy episode.

I've never experienced a series where I honestly felt that even a dope like me could have made better decisions on plot points a d story lines being tied up.
