Yet we're supposed to learn new stuff about other characters, and have arcs revolving around them, but Ricket keeps being the centerpiece of it all even when she isn't linked to said characters.

It's still Valkyrie Profile.
They compromised on character art because it was too resource intensive, ruining several designs for no good reason in the process instead of just not using the hard parts and scraping useless characters.
So basically the one thing going for it (the look) got fucked and 2/3 of the playable cast looks awful now. No more paint textures or really any shading, either.
