Are they reliable? Do they have the tuning/intonation issues the les pauls have?
Are these any good?
SGs have all the same issues as Les Pauls, including Gibson's stupid headstock construction.
i love my SG. way lighter than an LP but with all the sustain (from the tune-o-matic bridge, NOT from the sheer weight of the LP)
Yes, but they're somewhat more ergonomic at least.
*Sorry, all the same issues except they don't weigh the same as a small car.
what's the matter with gibson headstocks?
easy to snap off if they take a knock
I bought one of a junkie on the street. Snapped off the headstock. Fixed it and I shit you not it stays in tune better than any other guitar ive had. Upgrade stock tuners and bridge.
angled backwards for a sharper string break angle
Fender designs their headstocks to sort of dip down, remaining at the same angle but breaking the strings back, using string trees for the
higher strings
different method of achieving the same goal, creating a sharp break angle for maximum sustain. this also happens at the bridge, on both
TOMs and floating fulcrum bridges
Gibson's method just happens to leave the headstock extremely vulnerable to snapping off if it's
hit right, that and typically Gibsons are made of mahogany vs Fender necks which are usually maple, the wood isn't as strong on Gibsons
entirely depends on make and model
Epiphones tend to get good around the $500 pricepoint and above, ofc anything Gibson that
doesn't have a quality control related issue is going to be good. i wouldn't buy anything out of
China or Indonesia at a super high pricepoint unless it's from a reliable plant like PRS's or
Epiphones, since they seem to have decent fit and finish as well as minimal QC issues
also depends on what ergonomically suits you. i think SG's and LP's have the same scale length,
but to me the SG feels longer than the LP does, because of where the body contours are in
relation to the bridge, since i use that as my anchor point for my picking hand
best bet is picking one up and playing it to make sure it works for you, and using my guidelines i
think
they look cool but they aren't comfortable to play and are unbalanced. Buy a Yamaha Revstar
looks like you saved some money on your camera, user
Depending on weather you get a Gibson or an Epiphone, and depending on the model, the only downside to an SG is the "Neck Dive".
On some models, it's easy to manage, on others, it can be a nuisance
thanks for the replies, bros. I did read them all even though I didn't respond.
i'm still on 3g brickphone. i ain't getting no 5g cancer waves in my shit
I still use flip phones and I change them every week and I only pay in cash
sold my sg for a jag because the neck dive was so fucking annoying
End grain. They're weak, because of how they're carved. They added a volute and used multiple piece necks in the Norlin era to solve the problem (which pretty much every other guitar maker with single piece carved necks did), but abandoned it because the "muh vintage!" crowd cried like babies about it. '57 didn't have volutes, so no LP or SG can ever have one. It's really fucking dumb.
A volute, or a scarf joint would fix the issue completely, but god forbid the "Muh vintage" crowd doesn't have a single piece carved neck. Because '57's didn't have scarf joints.
They’re very good jsut need a long neck tenon model for stability
>jag
you know I've seen those guitars before but I never knew what they were called.
I have the bass and it’s everything I’ve ever wanted. I rest my forearm on the body so neck dive isn’t an issue
wait til you see the jagstang
yeah that is kinda weird. I wonder how it plays.
Pay attention to the tuning machines, lads. My light as fuck Gibson SG is PERFECTLY balanced BUT uses the Kluson old-timey shits, they're much lighter. My Epi SG has the kidney beans and it's almost unplayable. I don't know how I dealth with that for so long as my only guitar but getting something that didn't nosedive changed my playing.
Also, a fender neck is bolted to the body. In the event that you did manage to irrecoverably fuck a Fender neck, you could replace it yourself with a screwdriver. Gibson necks are glued to the body, which makes it much harder to deal with a snapped one, which isn't great considering that they are also easier to snap.
I loved playing one in the store. vastly underrated clean tone
I’m wondering if I should snag one. I play post punk style stuff and never see anyone play an SG, it’d be unique.
The best post punk tone I’ve gotten by far has come from a silvertone 1478, it outclassed all of the typical fenders line jags and jazzes
>Stuck in 2008 and can't leave
Move on, bro. Things are different now. It's been 14 years. The robo-guitar can't hurt you anymore.
Why'd you take the shielding off your humbuckers? They give you more sustain and are good for making even more noise (cause they love feedback).
the neck is super thin like an early mustang. I fucking love mine, not worth $1300 though. I bought it because I've wanted one since I was 10
I wouldn't buy anything non-US period, but that's just because I don't support globalist xploitation of countries with shitty labor protection laws and low wages. I know the US version costs more because they actually pay their staff well, and I support companies that pay their labor well.
Kurt's worst invention...
Why doesn't it have the jag/jazz tremolo? That's like the whole point of getting a jag/jazzmaster...
He didn't spec the tremolo so Fender just made a funny looking Mustang. I think he just said "whichever works best", which is obviously the JM/Jag trem but that would have cost Fender more to produce. It's a pretty comfy guitar to play, especially sitting down. The shape is definitely polarizing though
Whammy bars like those kill the sound, like, really. That would make it ordinary by any means tho
$1000 and you are GOOD with buying an SG sir
I wish the neck joined the body at the 16th fret or something. Feels way too long despite its shorter scale
There's a reason why no one plays them for post punk. Guitars don't just look different
Then don’t get a double cutaway
>Then don’t get a double cutaway
What?
Sigh. If you don’t have it in you to get one, don’t buy it. Shitposting should be fucking banned btw
>what is a stratocaster
I didn’t even have the Stratocaster as my beginner model and it still blew people away. Buy one then. But you better not complain when you’re only spending $500 for guitars imo
What are you on about? I'm not OP
So? I’d talk to you the exact same way, newfag.
Strange lad
This. I have a LP copy with a normal back angled headstock and a 3 piece neck, the center piece is reverse grain. The strap slipped and my neck hit the ground. Only a small crack developed, were it an authentic Gibson, it would have snapped. I put wood glue inside the crack and clamped it for a few days. Now sounds even better!
I have one.
They're good, but there's literally no reason to get a Gibson one. I have a Gibson one and in the past I had an Epiphone SG. They're identical.
Intonation is fine, tuning has the notorious G string issue, but I play in halfstep down tuning so it's not even noticeable. For some reason the G string on SG's tricks tuners. Your tuner will say the G string is in tune, but it's a little flat every time. Tune it slightly sharp and it's perfect.
I put in Dimarzio pickups, stock pickups kind of poopy
Good enough for Zappa, good enough for anyone.
no. a $300 harley benton wipes the floor when you compare them to even the USA built gibsons. its embarassing when you spend over $700 on an instrument and it doesn't have stainless steel frets
>tuning has the notorious G string issue
dropped. I'm so sick of that shit with my Les Paul.
the neck profile on these things is fucking amazing imo
you are genuinely fucking retarded if you think anything retailing for less than $500 can compete with American made anything
i have a G&L that i bought used for $350 and it plays and sounds incredible, but ik for a fact that an American made Strat would blow it out of the fucking water
liking cheap guitars is cool, there are a ton of good options, but saying it's "just as good as" anything American or even Japanese or Korean made is fucking retarded
that happens on every guitar ive owned but my strandberg holds that string super well
>American made Strat would blow it out of the fucking water
you're retarded if you're paying for an American strat when the Mexi's are literally the same shit for a fraction of the price. keep thinking everything American made automatically makes it better. Its probably when Gibsons headstocks break for no reason, or how Mexi and American strats literally have no distinction besides different serials and pricetag
>but saying it's "just as good as" anything American or even Japanese or Korean made is fucking retarded
keep up the cope while a $300 guitar still plays way better than an overpriced American Fender with the same parts they source from overseas factories
they are quite literally not dude lmao, Mexican shit might be made with the same materials but the craftsmanship isn't there
heel cuts for better fret access, locking tuners, TSA cases for transport, hand wound pickups, push pulls for phasing or expanded pickup options, rolled fretboards, options for bound bodies and necks, etc.
when you start getting into the custom shop range, you can get literally whatever options you want for your guitar, all hand-made. lets not even mention the line of reissues, let alone their Japanese made guitars
Mexi's are good, but to say they compete with American or Japanese made is to say you have never held either in your life
you are delusional and i am simply going to ignore your poorfag take
>"a blurb of random features that $300 guitars have"
another ameritard thinking something is good because it has cookie cutter features that budget guitars now have. you fell for the jew corporate Fender marketing. good job.
i literally just said that Japanese and Korean shit is still miles better than your $300 Chinese shitstick you fucking tard lmao, actually some of the shit coming out of Japan is better than American made shit because with big names like Fender and Gibson, they tend to stick to guitars that they've been making and rarely innovate with any of their American made shit
the Japanese plants however is where a lot of their cool guitars come out of and i have yet to play a Japanese Fender i didn't think was badass. reason being i think is because the Japanese take pride in the work they do, whereas Americans take pride in the work they did
the only company that has successfully gotten an Indonesian plant to produce good-playing, QC'd instruments is PRS, and that's the only company i would buy an Indo guitar from above $500, everything else is dogshit
question is tho: will you be calling me a jew shill when the pickups in your $300 Harley Benton eventually give out in 2 months because little en he was winding them in the sweatshop? methinks not lol, cope harder
>will you be calling me a jew shill when the pickups in your $300 Harley Benton eventually give out in 2 months because little en he was winding them in the sweatshop?
no cause harley benton actually makes good guitars unlike Fender custom shops where they literally put on the wrong options from what their customers picked out
you're not a jew, you're just a dumbass with too much hype behind something that's not worth more than $500
