1) Pott's art style is very much the kind you would have seen in old children's books. It has a very nostalgic feel to it, and while the cartoon proper has changed it to make it easier to animate (or, in FUCKING MOYNIHAN's case, completely ignores attempting to stay on-model), it still retains the same pathos behind it. If you combine it with a timeless setting or, in this case, what appears to be the late-90s, you have a group of people who will look at it with fond emotions on both a personal and collective level.
2) It has writers who care about what they're writing, or at least appear to. It's got stupid-funny word puns, it's got smart dialogue, but the most important thing, to me, is that it doesn't pull any punches when it comes to emotional impact, especially when it involves Hedgehog and her family. It's a show that does a great job of sucking you in to a level of comfort, punching you in the gut, and then making you feel like you deserved it. In this way, it's effective at making you remember all of the bad things; however, the comfortable parts of the show are there to soothe the ache.
3) The child voice actors are great. Everyone remembers the old Charlie Brown cartoons, despite their kindergarten VAs being awful. Having actual pre-teens voice the characters, save the witches and adults, makes the kids feel believable, and the fact that the kids are good at their jobs makes you want to see more of any of them, rather than praying for a Susie scene so she can talk instead of them.

I didn't like Adventure Time to begin with. When the showrunners are slack cunts who let writers do whatever they want (see: The Loud House and Adventure Time), you get a mess of a show.

I didn't enjoy AT, even in the earlier seasons. Every episode felt like "the writers' barely disguised fetish", it felt like an aimless show, it felt like it went for a massive backstory that was completely unnecessary but included because "nuclear holocausts are dark and serious", and pulling on Ron Perlman of all people to create a real "villain" to try and grab "mature" viewers (aka fourteen year-olds) was ridiculous to me. AT, at its core, was pretentiousness to me.
SCI, on the other hand, is reveling in it being dumb fun. When Oscar exclaimed, "This game is for babies... I love it!" I smiled. SCI is a show that understands what it is, a children's cartoon, instead of trying to be the expressed redemption of a depressed, introverted freak.
In fact, despite everything I've said about AT, SVTFOE worked doing the same thing (replace "nuclear holocaust" with "racial genocide" and "Ron Perlman" with "Michael C. Hall") for the first two seasons because it reveled in Star being a gigantic fuck-up instead of perfect. Compare pre-S3 Star with Finn as a chaotic protagonist, and it becomes apparent why Finn is completely unengaging, but Star, who is a girl and I can't self-insert as, is riveting.

Everyone else improved while the main duo end up both becoming unlikable. I feel like they should spent more time doing thing together with the other character then being attached at the hip. Oscar and Hedgehog both have 100% went more insane with their personality and issues. Hell even Susie is more likable at this point.

I just finished season two and it just made me dislike them in general. They were fine in Season 1 but I feel like they amp up all their bad qualities. Doesn't help Headgehog pretends to be a nice person,but is generally really shitty. Oscar regressed hard to being a clumsy idiot unaware of anything. Doesn't help they keep pushing in Max who still has no real personality despite them pushing him.

I believe the opposite. This show, along with Potts' other work, is bursting at the seams with pubescent sexuality. From HH's lust for Max, to Oscar's visions of first sexual experiences with Lucy, to Susie's near Freudian Jocasta Complex, to the Witches dealings with immortality and lost love. Hell, the whole fundamental concept of summer camp in general deals with youth leaving their homes and dealing with sexual exploration in a safe environment. The only reason the show doesn't explicitly address sexuality is it's targeted to children, and it's produced by Cartoon Network in a hyperpuritanical America. But we're not Cartoon Network middle management from the Standards and Practices department, and to perpetuate their prudery on Yea Forums for no reason is insanity.
