I've enjoyed these more than any others yet. That dream sequence was incredible and the character stuff and sense of humor are still totally on point.

Also I love the pencilling/thatching/whatever you’d call it. I’m also really impressed by the artist’s use of body language, every panel with Sophia in particular you get a sense of really animated movement in every little gesticulation. She’s a bunch of still images but it feels nice to watch her move.

Feels like we’ve covered a lot of ground since the start but the story isn’t even a third of the way over. Really curious to ses where things go from here.

Depends on what you mean by consistent quality. For one, Cerebus eventually dips in quality and hard. Second, I can think of several comics done by the same author(s) that maintained a consistent level of quality, either throughout, or for a good chunk of their runs, depending on whether you mean quality in general or quality on the level of Church and State.

Name a few? I'm not knowledgeable on Euro comics and I'm seriously drawing a blank on any American comics that sustained Cerebus quality narrative for, say, 250 issues or so. Love and Rockets springs to mind but the Hernandez Bros are rather inconsistent with their output.

While the quality of the writing here is debatable, does quality of the artwork once Sim brought Gerhard aboard ever really falter?

I factor manga in when I think of comics, so I consider things like Nausicaa, Phoenix, and Berserk (the one manga that get compares to Cerebus the most and not entirely without reason.)
Bone more or less maintained quality too, as well as Usagi.
Art-wise, the series only gets better.

I've tried Bone and Usagi and just can't get as in to them as I could with Cerebus. They are great for what they are but I don't think they really compare. As for manga, I've never been able to really get into any. I've tried Akira and several others and did not think much of them. It's more a me thing.

North American Market? Very tough to find something like this.

I'm not necessarily saying those comics are on par with Cerebus, just that they maintain a certain level of quality throughout their run.
If you prefer a more western-style experience, try the Nausicaa manga. Miyazaki was good friends with Moebius and it shows, there's a European-style lean to his work because of it.
Berserk is the one comic I've seen recommended as most similar to Cerebus, but it really isn't. Both works were at least partially inspired by Conan, which is where most of the similarities come from. Other than that, Cerebus and Berserk are fundamentally different stories. The former is a biting satire, the latter is a dark fantasy action epic, and they address different themes in different ways.

I feel you, when I read it first I read all the way up to jaka's story in a weekend.

A bit early for this storytime but the ending to Church and State is one of the best endings I've ever read. If the series ended there, Cerebus would've been regarded as a masterpiece (even with some unanswered questions.)
