GRUMPY OLD COMICS

FUN SIZE EDITION

LESS FILLING MORE GRUMPY

>wtf is this
it was supposed to be a 4 part miniseries based on the MYST franchise
>wtf is MYST
ask your grandmother she probably played it.
It was surreal, atmospheric as hell, impossible without a hint book, and had a pretty forgettable backstory (imo) except for this one little comic
>where is the rest of this
this is it, the creators cancelled it for some reason. I guess the names of the brothers is backwards from the game (honestly I can't tell) but that's such a retarded reason for canceling this wonderful gem.

Beautifully illustrated, beautifully colored, soulfully written, elevating its banal video game tie in to something much more interesting--and tragically killed by...

...these two fine "men"

Anyways. You know street preachers will just stand out there in public and rant about jesus even though no one is listening?
Well Ross Scott of Accursed Farms is like that guy for video games.

I'm the Ross Scott of forgotten comics.
Let's enjoy (with alcohol)

So this is how it opened, not really that good but there's a skull so... you've got me comic.
Page 1 was nothing but the lettering and the skull drew me in.

Attached: myst_botbs_1.jpg.jpg (981x1500, 257K)

page 2 was when I realized I was reading something special.
Even in this sorta bleak monocrhome underground, its like the whole rainbow is creeping in around the edges.

I love this coloring, its spilled crude oil in the sunlight. Dark but full of color.

Really liked the inking too because it left JUST the right amount of pencil lines visible. Really awesome feeling.

Attached: myst_botbs_2.jpg.jpg (981x1500, 1.08M)

the coloring continued to impress the shit out of me.
Really kind of crap colors IMO pink/magenta, yellow but here it is working together and not in an ironic campy way but in a real way

also the story was so badass:
an entire culture gone, just consolidated down into this one super egotistical Kronos figure.
Really set the mood for the rest of the story

Attached: myst_botbs_3.jpg.jpg (981x1500, 246K)

Lost me here with the explicitly "video game" exposition but I was already hooked so I tolerated this an the subsequent page

Attached: myst_botbs_4.jpg.jpg (981x1500, 251K)

this is an awful page but I guess it was necessary for the license tie in. Cringe and move on it gets SUPER GOOD

Attached: myst_botbs_5.jpg.jpg (981x1500, 243K)

here we back in good stuff.
The words of the father sinking into water, already without even knowing the vidya game backstories:
these kids are up to NO GOOD

Attached: myst_botbs_6.jpg.jpg (981x1500, 227K)

I don't know why but the square dialog boxes really jumped out at me.
Honestly I prefer boxes to bubbles, possibly because of this one little comic.

Attached: myst_botbs_7.jpg.jpg (981x1500, 311K)

really love the details on the black ships and their whole HI Giger/Lovecraftian thing.
When this came out I was immersed in a thousand such similar styles and homages back to Giger's alien designs but this one still stands out in my mind as being especially unique and frightening.

Attached: myst_botbs_8.jpg.jpg (981x1500, 268K)

this is the stuff nightmares are made of.
I really love the the ever present menace, and how the two brothers are going into deliberately,
they remain as safe as they are willing to be corrupted

Attached: myst_botbs_9.jpg.jpg (981x1500, 261K)

I still can't figure out where they got their inspiration from for these black ships people

it reminds me a lot of the artwork on the first couple Cathedral albums. Looks vaguely catholic and totally perverse.

Attached: myst_botbs_10.jpg.jpg (981x1500, 318K)

sorry I fucked up the numbering but I'm not going to renumber these files now. here's page 11 as page 10 again.
Again I love the theme of self corruption as both a means to power and a protection.

Attached: myst_botbs_10.jpg (981x1500, 1006K)

the dialog is so sinister.
we began with Ghen a twisted bad guy.
His son, a rebellious good guy has two children Sirrus and Achenar and they're both already just evil as hell through raw genetics.

already they've found a surrogate father in wickedness, this grotesque effeminate monster lol

Attached: myst_botbs_11.jpg (981x1500, 259K)

again we're back to weird color choices that sound terrible on paper and typically only "work" in irony,
here used with sincerity and WORKING

I like how the use of color prompts the reader to wonder "are these black ship people really so evil? maybe they're just different?" and leaves you with that sort of tension where you don't know which way its going to go.

Attached: myst_botbs_12.jpg (981x1500, 1.26M)

this feeling continues for the next few pages
the black ship people seem to be fairly normal but there's evil weirdness creeping in at the edges.

the reader, just like sirrus and achenar begins to feel more comfortable than they should with the situation

Attached: myst_botbs_13.jpg (981x1500, 300K)

again we think "oh maybe this isn't so bad, look they're teaching them things"

Attached: myst_botbs_14.jpg (981x1500, 322K)

And then WAHM
no
nOPE
NOPE NOPE NOPE
definitely, unambiguously evil.
Giant wall of skulls and a bloody altar with worms on the floor.

right as the reader recoils the two protagonists are in ecstasy. Really well executed character development in a very short stack of pages.

Attached: myst_botbs_15.jpg (981x1500, 280K)

Love that first panel. Its such a great pay off how the more innocent, reluctant brother has become the more debased of the two.
And its not just like "durr irony lol" but it was set up believably and pays off like a jackpot.

so fucking creepy
>I never realized just how beautiful they are right before they die

Attached: myst_botbs_16.jpg (981x1500, 275K)

here again we have some of my favorite panels in any comic ever.

>do you miss them [our parents]
>no... ...but I miss missing them if you know what I mean. Its like I don't know who I am anymore.

fucking chills man. Again were back with magenta and yellow, warm as fuck colors, but nevertheless the mood is just cold cold cold. Sub zero cold.

masterworks stuff. I fucking love this

Attached: myst_botbs_17.jpg (981x1500, 211K)

And then we're back in vidya game land *sighs*
It makes sense the narrative has to come back to the father at this point but its weird you can almost feel the artist giving less of a fuck about everything as soon as he has to tie it back into Yea Forums plot

Attached: myst_botbs_18.jpg (981x1500, 237K)

*sigh*
most of these panels don't even have backgrounds.

Attached: myst_botbs_19.jpg (981x1500, 250K)

but then I love this, the wicked smile of the treacherous child, the increasingly black backgrounds, and the cold glow perfectly complementing the sunset on the black ships.

Attached: myst_botbs_20.jpg (981x1500, 262K)

and then this little teaser

I WAS SO READY FOR MORE
FUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

I always thought there were more issues of this I just couldn't get from my local grocery store or whatever but then everything got uploaded onto the internet in the 2000s and I found out no, this is it, those socks on sandals wearing fuckers cancelled it for no reason.

Attached: myst_botbs_21.jpg (981x1500, 188K)

dark horse released an issue 0 online later but you know what?
it sucks.

it doesn't have this energy, these characters, that COLOR

its a fugging disgrace and I'm not even going to post it. All you get is a handful more pages of video game exposition and none of the wicket character deveolpment.

fuck you cyan this story was sooo good. And what good did it do you to cancel it? So your brand would be more solid for the launch of URU LIVE or any of the other myst sequels no one played or knew about?

fuck I'm grumpy

next time we're doing a comic that didn't just end mid story.
