In Yea Forums media, why do lesbians receive so much more representation than gay men? And of the gay male characters there are, they are usually middle-aged, conventionally unattractive, and limited to side characters. Meanwhile lesbians are always young and in the main cast. Why is this?

Men are icky but lesbos are sexy, according to the majority of the target audience, most of which are male.

Because lesbian romance still appeals to the core demographic of Yea Forums media, young men. That and I think gay women are more likely than gay men to be interested in/write comics (anecdotally).

Yea Forums properties have traditionally been a bunch of dudes, and those dudes have gotten extremely well defined over the decades. They don't age, they stick around. Batman, Superman, Wolverine and the rest are still the main faces of Yea Forums.

Women have only relatively recently started to make inroads into Yea Forums properties, and whether they be older characters pushed more into the limelight now, or new characters just introduced, they generally don't have the sheer volume of baggage that many of their male counterparts have. Thus it's just easier to make 'em gay.

Because they are marketable. Sounds cruel, but its true.

Men aren't that much. Not saying they aren't pretty, the strong is beautiful and it has a an appeal that women VERY rarely can match, but is not nearly as good of a product that you can sell to the masses.

Because progressives are no less "homophobes" than anybody on the practical level.

Nobody actually likes seeing fags in media except other fags (and fujos), and even then they all have their own specific variations they want to see. It has an extremely limited appeal since real life or more realistically drawn gay shit is off-putting for the vast majority of audiences who aren't gay and don't give two shits about being progressive when they're just sitting down to watch/read something. Most folks wanna see dudes bang hot chicks and guys like lesbians as long as they're hot because it's just double of what they like. You arent going to see any bull dykes as main characters either since they probably have the most limited appeal of all. People will pay lip service to the idea of gay representation in media but that doesn't mean they're actually going to sit down and consume it when there's nothing for them to really get out of it if it's the main focus. They just give an Oscar to some big gay movie like Brokeback or Moonlight every now and again to remind everyone how progressive they are and then proceed go back to not really giving a shit.

Somebody still has to foot the bill for this crap and nobody with money to do so is going to fund a series about cute boys banging each other since the audience would be so limited.

Wasn't really talking about a full series, but even side characters in shows, they're all lesbians rather than fujoshi pandering. I'm assuming it's because they don't want to make their male co-workers uncomfortable, so they'll settle on lesbians.

Yea Forums (like cartoons) media is usually kid stuff and people think lesbos are safer than gay dudes for kids to watch. i don’t see a lot of dykes in comics though, probably because no man wants see a hot unavailable woman.

Lesbians make fewer people uncomfortable. LGBT supporters like having the representation, and certain heterosexual men who might otherwise be homophobic find them hot. So, fewer people complain.

I think that they do make a conscious decision to make the gay males safe and kinda sexless in these cartoons, though. They're just dumpy, middle-aged dads which no on is going to give a thought to. Younger lesbians may be more thought-provoking and even titillating, but not as offensive (to some people) compared to young males who some boys might find more of a connection to than the dad types.

I think I worded my last sentence incorrectly. I meant to say that younger lesbians are thought-provoking and (potentially) titillating in a less offensive way. I'm not trying to imply that they are objectively more thought-provoking and titillating than gay guys.
