Pen Ward

>pitch a fun adventurous pilot about a boy and his shapeshifting best friend to CN
>Unexpectedly becomes the most popular well renowned show of the early 2010's
>Shows popularity took a huge toll on him so he left during season 5
>show declines in quality over the years and ends in a disappointing and forgettable note.
Literally what's he been up to?
Has he given up animation or is he cooking something up behind closed doors?

He put together Bravest Warriors and handed it to Breehn Burns to run. But that was a few years ago.

Last I heard of him was he was storyboarding some of season 6 but that was it, far as we know he doesn't want to be in the spotlight and wants to stay on a low profile, like the fate of his shows he wants to be completely forgotten.

let him, Sucrose, and Necfy be the unholy trinity example of not letting your storyboarders take control of your show

He’s at Netflix. They threw a bucket of money at him to create/produce anything he wanted. He literally doesn’t have to do anything beyond give them an idea and put his name on it. Pen had said he was done with the industry but even he couldn’t pass up such big easy money.

I don't know but I wish I get a cake as cool as his 30th birthday.

Source?

dude trust me

Your dad works at Netflix?

Bravest Warriors went to shit as well. What is it with Pendelton not ending what he starts just to leave it to some fucking hack?

his dad IS Netflix

Is there a reason that it feels rare to see popular showrunners come back with a new idea?

Is it just that hard to get another pitch off the ground regardless of name recognition, or do most showrunners just lose the desire to keep going with another series after so much time?

Endings are hard

I think a lot of people realize that having a great idea alone doesn’t necessarily prepare you for how intensive show running actually is and get burnt out. It really depends on the person.
A friend of mine sold a show to a network, they produced a pilot and everything but it didn’t get picked up- they were relieved in the end because dealing with the network and the studios overseas that animated it, even just for a pilot, was a disaster.
Some people just aren’t cut out for it

Is the pilot available anywhere online??

I'm going to paraphrase here, but in an interview when asked would he ever make another show he said "No, absolutely not"

I wish we could see his SU boards. It was nice to see some AT alumni reuniting with Rebecca for Diamond Days.

its not, Pen Ward had two shows running at the exact same time, one of them is still going (and both went on longer than they should have). Genndy has 3 now. JG Quintel has 2. John K had like 4 I think, 3 maybe if you consider APC the same show as R&S. Craig McCracken has had about 3 now, with a 4th coming to netflix eventually, his wife whose name I cannot fucking remember has a show whose name I can't mention and DC Super hero girls. The creator of fanboy and chumchum has a second show coming 2020, glitch techs. Bryke got 2 shows (though, like APC that depends on if you count Korra as a seperate show). Creator of rocko made camp lazlo. Butch Hartman had 4 shows (at 2 seperate points in time he had 2 shows running in parallel). Peter Browngardt has 3 if you count the upcoming Looney Tunes shorts

There's a bunch of others I can't name right now, but it's not rare at all, execs would very much prefer to higher people with a proven track record for success. The only reason they don't just get the same showrunners over and over again is because those people having realistic and marketable ideas for cartoons multiple times just isn't going to be 100%
Harvey Beaks was literally only greenlit because Greenblatt made Chowder.

Steve Netflix is that you?!

Jorge Gutierrez has not had a successful pitch since Book of Life. And he keeps on trying.

I don't know about most of what he said, but Pen Ward IS working at Netflix

I can’t find it anywhere. My friend has a copy but I don’t know if they’re allowed to share it or even talk about it...no idea how that shit works. It was done by Nickelodeon nearly 10 years ago.

>Genndy has 3 now
Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Sym-Bionic Titan, and Primal makes... three?

>Maya and the Three, a nine-part Netflix miniseries
>not a successful pitch
user, are you okay? Based Jorge even had to turn down an offer to direct a new LEGO movie because of Netflix’s offer.

Your average nerdy, introverted, deviant cartoonist isn't cut out to be a showrunner. You need a much higher social iq and organizational skills to manage people effectively.

going to be honest, i fucking forgot sbt existed

>Bravest Warriors went to shit as well
Prosucera did fire Breehn because they didn’t like his pitch for season three. Not sure if that had something to do with it.

>Prosucera
The fuck did my phone just autocorrect to?

>Danny
Oh boy, let me guess. Does she have a big poofy pomp undercut now and wear tuxes?

Toby recruited him for his heist team

Toby?

Didn't they tease a Book of Life 2? Or was that just speculation?

>*Does he have a big poofy pomp undercut now and wear tuxes?
FTFY. Respect the dude’s pronouns, bigot.

Yeah, and that’s not even listing the creators of adult cartoons who all went on to sell new shows for streaming:

>Matt Groening (Disenchantment)
>Justin Roiland (Solar Opposites)
>Loren Bouchard (Central Park)
It’s more common for first-time show creators to continue running projects of their own rather than residing in a lower position.

>adult cartoons
those aren't cartoons, those are trash

seriously why the fuck was disenchantment so bad? early simpsons was great, early futurama was great, i was so hyped for groenings early fantasy parody but it just turned out to be a forgettable heap of shit from the get-go.

The show would have been better if they pulled a Gravity Falls and ended at Season 2 instead of milking the show.

Agreed, he talked about how it was affecting him both physically and mentally during season 5 production but instead of putting the show to rest, he just decided to hand it to some literal who.

Wait what? I never heard about (guessing you meant to say) Frederator firing Burns. Details?

I don't know, I think they had plenty of ups and downs, but I still had fun with the later seasons.

Underdeveloped concept is obvious, Netflix paid Matt Groening to come up with a show before he did, this was not pitched. Also there’s a major learning curve in the writer’s room in that these guys are all coming from writing 3-act 22-minute broadcast shows. Suddenly without time limits or act breaks, plus the addition of serialized elements, they have no idea how to pace, self-edit, or maintain comedic rhythm. I can feel the stories and comedy beats in there but they’re letting all the scenes run too long, the supposed creative freedom is actually hurting them.

It would have obviously been far better than what we got but ending with de-aged Bubblegum would have been dumb

What was the point? Go to CalArts drop a ton of money just quit the industry. The fuck man. absolutely makes no sense he can make whatever he wants and doesn't. It really makes me question whether he really even like animation to begin with.

100% this. There were multiple times throughout the season where a joke or visual gag felt like it was being dragged on for too long.

At least Part 2 seems to be doing a lot more than just random, occasionally funny castle misadventures: youtube.com/watch?v=Q00bB9o7Eok&t

he doesn't want to make something with a plot and ending.
he just wants to make cartoons.

He liked animation not running one of the most popular series of his era. That burnt him out, now he still does animation but on his own terms at his own pace to avoid said burnout.

I think it would’ve been fine.

I thought one of the first season's problems was that the trailer hyped up a big fantasy road trip adventure only for most of the season to be about them just dicking around the castle getting wasted. I thought it got a lot better in the last few episodes.

Disenchantment was so bad, it had me agreeing with moviebob almost word for word. MOVIEfuckingBOB

Is Shelby gonna divorce her now?

Isn’t she legitimately autistic? I doubt she’ll find anyone better.

There's a lot more to running a show than animation

>Genndy has 3 now
Wait, what's he working on aside from Primal?
