Plot wise mostly the same but the redeemed characters actually stick around and get to live with Steven like the other three main gems. Peridot gets her star earlier in the show and Lapis is less of an asshole.
Aesthetically more like season 1 later season have too much scifi when the gems used to look more magical that technological.
For townie episodes the gems are involved in one way or another instead of just being Steven and some boring human.

she was probably one of the first if not THE first gem ever manufactured, so she probably has a hand in the destruction of whatever race created the gems
make homeworld a surveillance state with white-puppeted gems controlling everything. Yellow and Blue mostly work on their colonies, with the only reason to be on homeworld is the occasional appearance
season 5 ends with pink, blue, and yellow evacuating all gems from homeworld while white blows homeworld and herself in a mad attempt to punish an entire population of disobedient gems
steven now takes the place as top diamond out of necessity, instead of the diamonds just doing shit for him because they adore him

when lapis flies off, she fucks off for good, only coming back at the end after the diamonds are beaten
SU is one of those things that could only come from sugar's diseased brain, only a fool would try to completely overhaul it
