CEREBUS STORYTIME: Part 6

We're back! This thread kicks off the CHURCH AND STATE arc. After being ousted from his position as prime minister, Cerebus gets dragged back into the world of politics kicking and screaming. Let's go!

O SHIT HERE WE GO!
Thanks for the commitment OP. I wonder why issue 51 was left out of the phonebooks? It's not really filler as it shows how Cerebus and co fled Iest and it's as funny as the rest of HS.

I read something once saying Sim thought it clashed tonally with the ending to HS, and didn't fit as the start to CaS. Go firgure.

112-113 was also left out, right? That one was perfect.

That ass shot is creative, feels natural and in character, and is drawn very attractively.

Thanks OP. Always a pleasure.

Do the reprints still use see-through thin toilet paper?

That was the eastern pope executed by decree of the western pope (aka Lion of Serrea) for blasphemy. Despite his barbarianism, Cerebus is still a devout Tarimite.
Fun fact- these three covers got Sim a cease-and-desist letter from Marvel. Apparently, you couldn't use any one obvious parody character on a cover more than once.

And as one of that Pope’s followers and powerful official himself he would be consider being open for the same treatment.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Yes, as buying a collection on quickly-yellowing crap paper is throwing away money.

When you get to the later volumes, they are more useful for cleaning up your stinky dinkies than as actual reading material.

Something something I hate da Mouse something.

>da Mouse
It happened in the '80s.

Something something.

bump

Size issues. #51 would have gone in the first C&S volume and the printer told him the book was too big as it was and would potentially cause the book to fall apart when read if they stuck more pages into it.

Same reason #112/113 was skipped in the second Church and State volume.

bump so this is stays up before I finish reading it

But the art is goddamn beautiful even in those latter volumes, much better than it ever gets in the issues people are officially allowed to enjoy.

Gerhard hasn’t even arrived yet. I began reading just before High Society and hadn’t looked at any of this in years. All of this work as solo project was such an accomplishment (publishing on top of everything else) in an unstable industry, with prices constantly rising, his steady rise in quality, meeting deadlines.
His wife became his publisher and Dave talked freely about how haphazard his process of finding his way was. He watched Hogan’s Heroes, that helped him with pacing story and took walks along the river listening to his brother-in-law talk about politics, war, and religion. I met Dave and Demi at a signing (this was before the end of HS ) and there was no hint anything that came later. Dave talked about his ambition for the animated project and I asked who he wanted for the aardvark’s voice. He said he always heard his dialog in George C. Scott’s voice. The man knew what wanted.

> He watched Hogan’s Heroes, that helped him with pacing story and took walks along the river listening to his brother-in-law talk about politics, war, and religion
Sounds comfy.
Also on his weekly youtube video this week he said anyone who becomes a patron this month or raises their donation for this month is eligible for a lottery to get a copy of The Strange Death of Alexander Raymond Vol.1 prototype.
He's still at it.

>and there was no hint anything that came later.
The sddest part of your post. Everything sounds so hopeful and exciting and then, crash.

Theresa really is aping Astoria. I wish we got more from her down the line, I don't recall seeing her again after Church and State.

>Theresa really is aping Astoria
>Cerebus really is raping Astoria
It's poetry, it rhymes.
