Steven Universe

Hank hill

>cartoons
>role models
These two should never be in the same sentence.

Modern user

He is an alright kid, but he is also kind of effeminate.

Most cartoon boys seem to be effeminate for some reason

Eh, nothing wrong with it I guess, just a quirk.

Depends on what you mean by good.
Regardless of the show's actual quality Steven Universe is a very positive role model.

If you had a good male role model you wouldn’t be a grown man watching cartoons

>modern cartoons
Even in the 90's, who the hell would have qualified as a legitimately "good" male role model? Bart Simpson?

The Swat Kats maybe?
They owned a business and fought crime.

He said male.

This sums it up

Dexter
Rocko
Weasel
Chuckie's father from Rugrats
Jay Sherman
Mufasa

>Dexter
the basement dwelling smartass with terrible social skills?

Not a cartoon but JOKER Joker.

Holy crap, the VA actually sounds good when not doing that falsetto he's had to do for years.

>Terrible social skills
Dude has many friends at school, including Mordecai, his D&D pals, the other kids with terrible accents, the middle aged kid etc..

Batman

He almost never hung out with those guys, he was always isolated for the most part.

Yeah he sounds way better.
I fucking hated Steven songs before the movie but the new ones sound pretty good.

>80s heroes like He-Man, Optimus Prime, Lion-o
All about projecting strength, facing challenges head-on, confidence. Moral code was absolute, strong lessons about doing the right thing no matter what.
>90s heroes like Swat Kats, Batman (Btas), Darkwing Duck, Goliath
Personalities aren't quite as strong. Many characters have "dark sides" or serious character flaws. Despite this, morality is still a key part of their message, and doing the right thing in the face of your inner demons is praised.
>00s heroes like Aang, Ben 10 (original run), Danny Phantom
Adult heroes are practically non-existent. High adventure series have been largely replaced with high school settings (with a few notable exceptions). Many heroes are immature, sometimes bordering on annoying. Writing becomes more complex, but character development often takes a hit with characters inexplicably learning lessons or changing abruptly. "Doing the right thing" is still the message, but the delivery is often unsatisfying or mishandled.
>10s heroes like Finn, Steven, Dipper
Often completely aimless. Rarely learn any permanent lessons. World often conspires against them with no payoff or triumph. Supporting cast is weak, the main hero is often effeminate or submissive to the desires of women. Being strong and taking charge is almost never shown in a positive light.

>has a baby with a whore
>willingly has a hybrid baby, with no guarantees things will even work out
>isn't financially stable when raising the child
>poorly educates the child
>gives up the child to be cared by 3(4) mentally unstable lesbians who had kidnapped him when he was a baby, almost willing to kill him if it meant bringing rose back

Yeah, like a hero

SU may be trash, but I think Greg is a good role model for a father. He may not be super intelligent, but you can't deny he cares about his kid.

> Supporting cast is weak
Disagree with this, but the rest is right

Eh, Steven kind of works, Stands his ground and doesn’t compromise on what he thinks is right, learns to not let your hatred with somebody a big deal, and he did mature over the show which the movie shows better.

Okay, but what about:

How many female role models can you name? Or at least characters that were made to be role models on modern cartoons

Every action cartoon character before the 90's

Hank Hill was, and still is, my male role model. Always takes charge in difficult situations, is dependable, honest, has a strong work ethic and a moral compass of steel.

Bob Belcher?

This is why we need this guy as a protagonist of a cartoon.

Yes, I know I am a shill.

When you say "good role model" you mean "boring character". Tell me why certain Americans are actually nostalgic for a time when their nation's animators had their creative freedom throttled by draconian censorship laws; a time when US cartoons, comics and television shows were the laughing stock of the world for being so dull and tacky. I can't imagine why you'd want a government-approved social engineering tool as the protagonist of your cartoon, instead of a flawed and interesting character with room for growth.

Sokka at the end of Avatar: The Last Airbender is pretty great from an SJW and non SJW standpoint. Misogynistic male learns to respect women while also not compromising his masculinity, becoming an accomplished warrior who kicks ass and likes to shop for accessories.

That's all?
Sokka is a good character but broh... i have more & better examples in Yea Forums.

>When you say "good role model" you mean "boring character"
This. The 80's toy commercial era had characters that were barely characters and who only succeeded if they looked cool which is why nobody gives a shit about say Duke but loves Lion-o, Snake Eyes and Optimus Prime. Only the kind of retard who lets their nostalgia do their thinking for them want that shit back.

It was the first example that came to mind. I’ll write an essay on it later.

he's funny because he's your dad

Spider Jerusalem
Movie Steve Rogers
Spider-verse Peter & Miles
Whoever in DC minds his own business and handles small human sized problems, oh, Alfred.

This. Hank Hill's a great dad. He makes mistakes and is pretty stuck in his ways but he never stops trying and does his best to set a good example.

And even the ones that became interesting, never started out as so, it was only their toyetic success that allowed them any freedom in say, comics,

Oh, that's nice.
Anyway, at least in Yea Forums there's your argument & Hank Hill one.
Homer Simpson golden age is considered, right?

>I need to make you understand what you're putting us through
>But dad, you'll never make it!
>Don't you think I know that!?

Poor guy got stuck with an ugly stupid wife. And trapped in a mediocre job he excels at but will never be rewarded for.

Has a good kid though.

That's the joke. The hero of the show lives 50% in everything, instead of a Big Texas Cowboy. Like how Seinfeld isn't about a glitzy New York City life, its about regular joe day-to-day hijinks. Characters with flaws are more interesting.

So according to YOU, the only 2 kinds of male role models on the West are 80s guys with no personality and modern liberal girly boys that complain about toxic masculinity?

I can unnironicaly name dozens of good male characters on anime

Well limited to cartoons and those specific decades, and consideirng Steven can become this dude. I don’t see a toxic masculinity issue. As for why you wish to make it an issue about East vs West, I have no idea. Personally, I prefer who you are over how you act.

Also forgot to mention you Why you think that male role models can only be afeminated, or having no personality?

t.lazy parent

No, my little bro look up to me. It was just a thing that my father said other day in a bothered tone, noticing that most cartoon father are either incompetent, dumb or assholes/evil.

His dad is, Steven doesn't work as a human role model because he doesn't deal with problems like a human.

he is a gigantic pussy

Well, yeah...

What I realized about Hank is that he basically embodies all of the traits that every baby boomer believes they have, while in reality, most of them are self-centered, helpless schlubs like all the other adults in Arlen. He takes pride in everything that he does, his job, hobbies, family raising, even his many volunteering positions, and he does all of these things with enthusiasm. He is an old school good neighbor, cares for his community, is self-reliant, does his best to be a good father to Bobby, despite personality contrasts, and always has the back of his friends and family.

Sure, the KotH writers likely wrote him as a parody of old fashioned Americans, but I find most of these traits admirable.

>In b4 "bloopdeeblah bad art style"

Fuck you all. He's the best role model we've had for a while now.
