Best guess is he felt so damn powerful that he started to see himself as a God, and above Humanity. Which just ended up being the worst choice for him to make because it made him start seeing Humanity as trash. He saw himself above all the 'petty' things humans strive for, and eventually to the point of seeing only the absolute worse in people. Literally.
He saw humanity as less then insects because he understood them to a point that made him insane.
That or he was just plain crazy, There are really a few things to note that could be the reasoning, the whole God dream, the random references to Aliens in the beginning.
Personally i think the best answer is that he was the words first and strongest Telepath, so strong that when his powers awoke everything around him just blew up from the sheer force of it. There isn't anything specifically Godly about his powers so that excuse doesn't work I feel, that and there isn't anything to assume hes a Superman type character from the metalstorm planet
