Yes and no. Due to having males and females they clearly were a sexual species at one point but that application of their biology has obviously become defunct. They are grown in tubes now. It's possible they were taller on average at one point as well. If you look past the green skin antennae and beady eyes it's clearly that Johen saw the Irken as the future of IZ's humans. In fact Zim arrives on Earth just as this process is beginning. Globalization has begun to homogenize human society, corporations have begun to form a single world government, everything is built on subliminal and overt control by a cabal of extremely powerful minds. Who do you think the Irken were before we meet them in the series? I'll give you a hint. They love snacks, level planets to create parking lots, are highly militarized and derive meaning from, and drive their economy off of perpetual warfare. Irken society is the worst of America and China rolled into one.

The thing about Zim that makes his actions more forgivable (or at least less disturbing) is that he's a comic foil character that is never portrayed as a hero. Everything he does is understood to be for the sake of a joke, and we have no expectation that an alien invader would be anything else but a villainous cretin. He does what we expect him to and does it in a funny way.
Dib is ideally the hero who is supposed to save mankind, and who most shows would focus on as a relatable protagonist. But in the show he is a weirdo so thoroughly beat down by his society and family life that he has become an ugly person in his own right. There is a strong component of vanity and vindication inherent in his motivations for "saving the earth." The truth is also he was always this insane paranormal enthusiast who endangered people and was unpleasant to be around, even before Zim came around. He is honestly a bit unhinged and troublesome.
It's all this that I think makes Dib an interesting character. He's not a noble sympathetic hero: nobody is. He was written to be a weird social outcast with delusional behavior, but he's the best chance humanity has at combating alien insurgency. So if ever wondering in the show "Is Dib supposed to be acting like an asshole/loser/unhinged maniac right now?" the answer is almost always yes.
You're trying to justify Dib's actions against criticism, while I'm saying it's meant to be unheroic and even unsympathetic.
