The big reason why the movie works is because it addressess the single biggest problems with the show, mainly steven himself and his real lack of character development. He's actually GROWN here, and he grows over the course of the movie more than he did in the first three sesons by a country mile.

I liked that brief 'love again' one. Mainly because it meshed so much better than pearl/opal's duet with whatever the father son thing is being called. That one had the visuals that it was supposed to be a really uplifting/upbeat track, but the sound just went nowhere. Have the same issue in general with greg tracks where the visuals create expectations that are too high I guess because the songwriting/production just can't capture that sound. The best they can do is grab that garage-like thing. Disobedient almost sounded like an actual song, unlike sadie's previous tracks. After that high energy, independent together just couldn't live up to the hype.
Speaking of highs... at this point Steven's VA should really avoid the higher range. Some of those here we are in the future reprisals were painful with that squeaky forced falsetto crap, and it really sounds like he's forcing notes on both ends of the scale, but at least his kinda scratchy low notes make sense for a pubescent teenager and were counterbalanced by Spinel's vocals.
I actually liked Garnet's song better than her previous two big tracks stronger than you and here comes a thought, but I just don't like seeing the same garnet origin story again for like the fourth time.
Drift away was strong at the start, but I think Spinel didn't really sell the emotion at the ending drift aways. The music was building, but the vocals stayed a bit too safe.
Contrast this with other friends and see how they managed to basically do it all better.
Let us adore you was cute, but a pretty sudden character shift. It was also cheapened a bit by making the reprisal almost identical for spinel, like you JUST met this gem. Would they have taken any pink gem at that point? Seems like it.
The first 'here we are in the future' seemed the most reminiscent of the series soundtrack with all its fast beeps and boops, so it's probably my favorite.
Worst track was easily Bismuth's crystal gem theme.

desu in terms of SU voice direction i kind of appreciate the more grounded approach to voice acting vs disney's/whatever else's plastic/larger than life SUPER CLEAN crystal as fuck voice acting

A solid 7/10. Spinel carried this movie on her fucking back. She was all the good things that have been explored with previous antagonists rolled into one condensed package. Her character arc was short sweet and to the point , even with a few flaws. The rest of the movie was pretty on par for SU. It felt more like the show running a victory lap, recapping all 160+ episode in one go. I am thankful for how Rebecca held back (or some of the other writers held her back) from extending the focus on anything that wasn't gem related. This could've been 1/2 Spinel focus, 1/2 townie crap.
Standout songs include Other Friends, Who We Are, Drift, and Change (I have a weakness for final boss, power pop tunes. Sue me).
I was always kind of critical of SU from the jump because I was expecting things of the show that just wouldn't happen because of the type of show it is, but the movie felt like something the show was trying to shoot for over the past 6 years.

The rest can be forgiven, but having no actual solution to the injector at the end, just some vague 'Steven will work hard and fix it' hand-waving is incredibly lame. Why?

Spinel isn't always "on". When she was younger, sure, it's a bit of a different story, but even then she was more aware of her surroundings and let people do their thing without being completely overbearing. Spinel as she is now is able to hold a normal conversation and can provide some pretty interesting observations. She also has a sad clown vibe to her, and her desire to cheer you up is completely genuine without feeling like it's generic hyperactive peppiness, so you naturally feel like you want to be her friend too.

The best explanation I've heard for Spinel's character comes from tumblr.

When she first appears after being reset and bonds with Steven she lets him take the lead in what they want to play, but also instantly stops when he asks her to and makes it clear he's not having fun.

Later when he gets sad when with Bismuth, Peri, and Lapis she tries to distract him by reassuring him that his best friend Spinel is with him. But that clearly doesn't work. Bismuth and the others trying to fix the problem is what really cheers him up, and she clearly takes notice of this, as distracting him didn't work she'll help solve the problem too. He reacts positively to this, so she continues to hang back and help him since that is clearly what's making him the most happy.

Even before the big reveal about what PD did to her, the movie was subtly establishing that there's more to even her happy-go-lucky base personality than just "random fun happy fun."

Half the movie is about Steven and friends trying to remember who they are, what they learned and shit. Since the story acts as a gateway to the new seasons it wasn't going to be something revolutionary and totally new, it's almost an homage to itself, or rather the characters

It would have been the perfect plan if she set the injector to explode remotely instead of injecting it into the ground. Bio-poison huts organic life, but it doesn't hurt gems. All she had to do was hit Steven with the scythe a few times, then make the injector pop like a water balloon. Steven wouldn't be able to heal, the poison would kill the organic half and Spinel would just swim in it because it doesn't do shit to gems.

The injector is stupid. It raises the question of where did it come from, and why didn't the homeworld just spam the earth with as many of them as possible until all life was wiped-out, because the crystal gems apparently couldn't do a fucking thing to stop a single one of them.

I liked the show back when the episode count was still in single digits. I never stopped liking the show despite the flaws since it was a fun animated soap opera and that was a nice change of pace.

It was fucking surreal to see it explode in popularity at the end of season one with all the crazies jumping ship from the other content starved big cartoon fandoms at the time (I will forever blame HSG for the existence of toxic fanbases here on Yea Forums, it is at the heart of all problems). Made it impossible to discuss the show shortly thereafter since the fanbase became full of do-not-associate-withs who have no ability to publicly suppress their power levels.

The writers dropped the ball hard when Steven reconciled with Spinel the first time around. Him saying stupid shit and spilling spaghetti after she deactivated the injector gave the impression to me like someone forgot there was more runtime to the movie, and it needed a proper climax with a grand battle.
