>build up a continuity over the past 6-7 years with FOUR novels and a short story contest
>get a show and immediately toss out that continuity,
>change entire sequences of events
>characters' personas
>their motivations
>change so much there is absolutely no way you can even pretend that they are the same continuity
>straight up lie to people telling them the show was based on the books
>expect this to NOT piss off fans
geeze, what the hell were they thinking?
Build up a continuity over the past 6-7 years with FOUR novels and a short story contest
Who the fuck reads books anymore?
people that aren't brainlets.
>>wait 37 years for another installment
>>get novels, comics, and manga to fill the gaps in lore, which while occasionally contradictory, are still fun
>>get a series dripping with passion, effort, and deep respect for the film.
>>series is devoid of modern politics or shitty humor to ruin it like NuStar Wars
>>series is almost explicitly setting itself up to be an alternate timeline
>>people still bitch because not muh
>build up a continuity over the past 6-7 years with FOUR novels and a short story contest
Literally noone knew any of that shit existed.
Why the fuck would the show be a continuation of books that noone read when the only thing this had going for it was that people know the movie?
This
The novels and comics were fun for die hard fans, but nobody should have to do research before watching Muppet Game of Thrones
Does the novels follow the lore/ setup in the Creation Myths prelude comics that came out before it?
>>>series is almost explicitly setting itself up to be an alternate timeline
I disagree, the Garthim reveal at the end pretty much proves that the show can easily lead up to the movie, with the gelfling genocide starting after the events of the show.
This. The making-of documentary makes it pretty clear that they used the novels and comics as inspiration for the world at large, but were interested in telling their own story that would relate to the movie.
Aughra keeps talking about seeing different outcomes. Maybe this will have a different ending
Here's the timeline as I understood it from the movie:
>Urskeks either made the crystal or started out with it
>In their arrogance they shattered it, and as a result they were split into their good and evil parts
>Augrah is just some sort of weirdo scavenger cat lady that finds the shard. She's still immortal but 100% neutral.
>Skeksis being more aggressive take control of the castle and crystal and continue abusing the crystal
>Mystics use their magics to divine a solution, and happen upon the prophecy
>Make the mistake of telling Gelflings, Gelflings write it down and talk about it, Skeksis find out and freak the fuck out
>que Gelfling genocide due to Skeksis' fear of prophecy
>Jen and Kira are spared due to Mystic intervention and whatnot
>Movie happens
Then all this extra lore came to my attention with the show and I gotta say, I'm not sure I prefer it.
Fuck off, shows/movies have restrictions that you have to plan around. Autists like you is why Legend of the Seeker got canned.
Waaaaah, muh source material. Sorry EU fag, the new shit is literally a million times more popular than your sacred texts.
I interpreted all of that to just be the explanation for how a prophecy could exist but not be a guarantee of fulfillment. Aughra can see that it's POSSIBLE for a good outcome to happen and she's trying to influence the world to push in that direction, but none of it can be certain or guaranteed.
I prefer the show's series of events, it's more interesting and Aughra has a better role along with a better relationship with the skekses. It's overall more compelling of a backstory than what was implied from the movie, imo.
You’re reading comics and books about a children’s cartoon fantasy world. Don’t act like you’re not a retarded autist yourself.
So this is the power of the clown world anti-intellectual laziness. Plugged to a brand and fed until death. Fascinating.
>>>series is almost explicitly setting itself up to be an alternate timeline
OP here, in what ways? I saw absolutely no evidence leading up to the premiere that this would be a totally different continuity than the books. It feels like the show itself is slapping me in the face for even bothering to read them or letting myself get emotionally invested in the characters. And now people who haven't read them now have no reason to. And the author of them, J.M. Lee was involved in the show, so congratulations Lee, you made your own novels completely irrelevant, I hope your proud of yourself.
Yes there are lots of references to Creation Myths in the Lee novels.
The first mistake was continuing with garbage puppets.
Are you a woman?
You sound like a woman.
You're losing your shit over 30+ year old tie ins. Calm down.
Why are you so upset about this? The novels still exist and you can still enjoy them and/or prefer them if you want. Why does it matter what's canonized? Just enjoy the stories as they are on their own, why do you need some corporate fucking endorsement to enjoy a story?
Are you the same user that was whining in the other thread about how the skeksis were good and how it RUINED EVERYTHING?
You could consider that changes from the creationmyths comics/novels preludes are changed do to ideas of refinement.
Maybe they took the chance to rewrite some ideas they weren't 100% on anymore.
Then again that could easily be making some excuses for what could be executives changing things for simplicity's sake.
Out of curiosity what are some key differences.
FOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUURRRRRRR AAAAAAAAARRRRRRMMMMMMMMSSSSSS!!!!???
NEVER FORGET
Literally no one read the books, care to offer some specific examples of major changes so we can actually discuss the lore instead of just discussing your aimless outrage?
I think setting the show 50 years before the movie was a mistake. If you want an Age of something, give yourself at least a hundred years. 50 is just too short in my mind.
The VITAL ESSENCE in the show is poorly handled in the show. It shows no physical change to the Skekses like it did in the movie. They don't appear younger, or more beautiful. Just making it a feel good drug lessens its effect in my opinion. Also, Gelfling juice should have lasted months in its effects.
I do like the Skekses were not hard wired evil. it essentially broke down to
>Skekses: Active / Passion
>Mystic: Passive / Logic
Which I'm fine with. They're not strictly good or evil, they are two halves a a complete person. Skekses only turned to true evil because the Mystics weren't there to reign them in.
To make it over 50 would mean the gelflings of the OG movie would need way longer to age, wouldn't it?
>noone
Ho do you get out of bed in the morning?
Considering the show ends with the Start of the Gelfling genocide, I would say that having a 100 year long war wouldn't have been too much to ask. Jen and Kira only need to be born in the final days of the conflict. And having an Age of Resistance would carry more weight if it was a generational conflict. Like, at least two generations of Resisting getting drained. And, everything on Thra seems to be stupidly long lived anyway, so Jen and Kira being older than they look wouldn't be too out of place.
I mean, they got 1000 years to work with, and the movie tells you that they're in the Age of Wonder. I don't know how you go from Resistance to Wonder, but I feel like this is a case of writing backwards.
I wish it were more clear how long a gelfling lifespan is and how old all the gelfling in the show and movie are.
In the sequel comic the main gelflings are ancient and it's been 100 years. So 100-150 years lifespan?
So the show replaces the recent Lee novels. Are the two seauel.comics and prequel gn's still canon?
>>assuming Muppet Game of Thrones was an insult
You have no respect for Dark Crystal
Ancient as in they're still alive but very old?
All you niggas using monosolar years and not TRINE
How do trine work exactly? How long is a Thra trine compared to an Earth year?
It feels more like the Lee novels were based on earlier outlines for the show with the intention of serving as a B-Plot to Rian's A-Plot, and things shifted in development. Really, the biggest contradiction between the two besides changing some of the timeline of Naia's efforts to light the fires is how they handle Tavra getting spider'd and that just screams "Showrunners thought it was too cool not to have in the show somewhere" and wanting it to tie more into the story of the Vapran Princess sisters..
So the novels still cover a large swath of events not in the show? But where they cross paths things are all fucky?
Yes.
I really wish a bookfag would go over the changes in more detail. I'm interested, but I don't want to read a ton of YA novels to find out.
neither of us mentioned The Dark Crystal (which is really far from a children's "cartoon"), user asked about reading in general and my response was referring to that as well. i've not read any TDC comics/books yet, so you can take your pretentious assumptions about what i do and do not read elsewhere lad.
I haven't been able to get past the fourth episode, which I've now watched three times. The scene where all the Gelfling meet up in the Podling village bar is the part where the story has deviated so far from the novels that it's impossible to claim they are in the same continuity. I don't know why this was done when it would have been easy to make something that perfectly coincided with the books, and I don't think that's a very high expectation to have.
Not only do events unfold differently but some of the Gelfling are acting completely out of character. Naia is not the type to hold a knife to someone in public, she would not threaten a stranger, who in the novels she knew was a friend of her brother. Naia is mature, intelligent, and compassionate, in the show in this scene she's acting like a bitch. Also her plan doesn't even make sense, why would the Skeksis trade one TRAITOR for another? That's stupid.
Also Kylan is out of character and the show doesn't even attempt to explain why he's there with Naia or even cares about her brother's fate. In the books he convinced Naia to tag along as he was on his way to Stone-in-the-Wood and Naia kept him in the dark about her real quest. Kylan's investment in the quest eventually comes from avenging his parents who were murdered by the Hunter.
Also there's absolutely no reason why Tavra would offer to go with Naia to rescue her brother. Wouldn't it make more sense to go with Rian to her mother to reinforce their claims against the Skeksis? This is not how Naia meets Tavra. This is not how Naia meets Rian. Kylan's presence is completely unexplained. EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT. I can understand omitting details here and there, like what happened in the LotR films, but this is like if Peter Jackson just scrambled everything up to the point to where his films did not even resemble the novels at all.
Apparently the adventures of the two Gelflings that Rian tells to go off and tell the others of the Resistance that only come back in the finale.
(cont.)
And again, I did not see this coming at all. There was no hints, clues, or statements thrown out there that this was going to be a completely different continuity from the novels. I feel like I was tricked, lied to, and I want to know who to blame for this. Was it you J.M. Lee? Did you not think this would piss us off? Because I loved your novels, they were great, but now no one who hasn't already read them has a reason to, they will always be seen as non canon now. Or did Lee just bend the knee to whatever changes others wanted to make and didn't make a fuss? I would be livid if I was forced into that scenario. I would pull an Alan Moore and say, "I don't want my name on this project and I don't want any money from it." I just.... really want answers now.
So in your interpretation, there's no reason to use the Conjunction since according to your events it was the shattering that split the crystal, not the conjunction, but the movie specifically had a timetable where they said they had to get it back by then. Meaning that the Gelflings no longer had any reason to write it down at all instead of, oh I dunno, putting the shard back in and fixing the whole thing? Augrha's now also a crazy cat lady who's allowed to essentially call the Skeksis cunts to their faces and not get any sort of backlash, including also being left to wander around the castle to exposit at the finale. She's just.. there? She's just there and even though the Skeksis have fuckoff monsters surrounding her and are apparently pure evil in your interpretation, they're just okay with calling her moldy mildew motherfuckers. Oh and now she's a scavenger... who never left her home but also has a mystic connection to this shard and gives Jen a test to make sure he's able to figure out the real one, for no reason I guess because she's entirely neutral?
I dunno you introduce a lot of plotholes with your version and make Skeksis little bitches who are afraid of a ranting dumpster hag.
Basically, Tavra getting Spider'd happens much earlier. She gets captured and nearly killed during the breakout attempt, so the Skeksis attach a spider to her to puppet the body around to lure Naia and Gurjin into a trap. Like there's this whole subplot about the Skeksis wanting both of them for "Twin Studies" of essence, thinking it might answer some questions regarding plans for the Mystics. What's left of Tavra's mind keeps trying to warn them or give clues to them that something's off, and in the fight that ensues when the spider is exposed and Tavra's Gelfling body is just about dead, Kylan manages to pull off some "dreamstitching" manuever that transfers Tavra's mind into taking over the spider body. Ends up training a new Grottan party member Amri in swordfighting since she's kinda useless as a little spider.
In the books, the stop in Ha'rar after the All-Maudra died happened after Naia had already lit the Sifa and Dousan fires versus the show having that come after so they could have the parties meet and split up in the desert.
Honestly, I just try and treat it as a broad strokes relationship. The first book Shadows seems to still function reasonably well with the show though in that it's mostly a "Naia and Kylan end up encountering the Archer and Hunter on the way to the Castle" story.
So I've only seen the movie. Will I enjoy the show or should I take my business elsewhere? Do the books/comics have the same appeal that the movie did?
Creation Myths great
Power of the Dark Crystal eh, don't care about its sequel Beneath
Had a good time with the JM Lee novels even with the continuity snarls with the show being kinda disappointing.
Loved the Legends Manga, RIP to any pretense of it being canon.
Thra itself seems pretty small. You can cross the world in a few days on tiny legs. (Assuming) a thrine is one complete trisolar cycle, maybe three Earth years
That would be me.
And I've never seen this clear of a close-up of this. I stand corrected.
People that aren’t brainless read dark crystal fan fiction?
see
>user asked about reading in general and my response was referring to that as well
I have only seen the film and the Creation Myth books. I have the same question
I only ever watched the movie and I loved the show. I thought the writing and acting was pretty good, but even beside that it's worth watching for the visuals alone. Seeing so many practical effects and sets and puppets is such a joy.
Having read the books as a kid I far prefer the show.
Also having puppets makes it inarguably more canon than the books
>Having read the books as a kid I far prefer the show.
We're talking about books that first started coming out in 2016.
Hollupaminnit you mean OP is autistically nostalgic for something that came out 3 years ago?
>>series is almost explicitly setting itself up to be an alternate timeline
The way Aughra kept talking about seeing different paths, and different outcomes in the future, I definitely smell that in the air.
That would sound awesome to be hired on to rewrite the material you would have produced a few years. Like your ultimate complaint is that the guy got rehired/ promoted to write for a different medium with a greater audience.
How anyone can get past these ugly-ass looking characters and overall stupid premise to actually care enough about lore and continuity in a stupid ego franchise made a closet gay retard obsessed with puppets.
I got something important to say.
You listening? Listen closely.
Ahem...
HmmmmMMMMMmmmmm
More like getting upset that a book series being actively crossmarketed with the show doesn't mesh as well with it as they had hoped. It's disappointing, but not surprising, in that Star Wars seems to be the only franchise autistic enough to pull off multimedia continuity consistency for the most part.
>needing characters be pretty to like them
Cram it you insufferable goon.
Hahahah waaaaaaaaaaah.
>Original film's focus on New Age spiritualism is completely scrubbed away and replaced with a forced "FUCK THE 1%!" metaphor
>Most of the Gelfling puppets look glaringly worse than Henson's did nearly 40 years ago
>Constantly forcing awkward showcases of their puppetry, rather than having it be gracefully and organically introduced like in the film, even if it's just in the background
>Too many characters because they want excuses to show off as much lore and sets and puppets as possible, at the expense of telling their story well
That’s the whole point of consuming media, dingus. If it’s not appealing, why the fuck would I care? It’s not enriching my life.
only way to enrich your life is to jump off a building, kiddo
i think that should fall on those who have nothing of value to say, i.e. yourself.
So you’re saying to expect a skekRump with blond hair next season?
>a forced "FUCK THE 1%!" metaphor
I actually kinda like this because they unknowingly produced one of the most right-wing shows on Netflix in many years. I know the point was to bash Republican businessman, but you look at the actions and demeanors of the Skeksis and tell me they aren't the most perfect representation of the kikes in film history.
>forced "FUCK THE 1%!" metaphor
is it really forced?
In the first episode, we literally see the Skeksis collecting offerings like taxes, a character says some approximation of "What if the elites are keeping us poor so we'll fight among ourselves?", and Chamberlain gives an embarrassingly blunt and out of place monologue about how the lower classes keep themselves oppressed with slave morality. The film is about good and evil through a New Age yin/yang lens. The series is nothing but political.
It's almost like art is informed by the experience and views of the artist
have you considered that media villains have acted like this forever?
Anyone have a download of the behind the scenes documentary? heard it was good stuff
Man this is the autism I come to Yea Forums for.
How is it forced. In the original movie didn't a minority genocide the gelflings? And corrupt a natural resource? Maybe you didn't notice because you were younger, but it's very much in line with the movie
You right wingers correctly identify that there's economic inequality because of the actions of a few, but then you go around and blame jews instead of capitalism. I know why you do this, but it's still fucking weird.
Don't you know that no media was political until 2010?
>It feels like the show itself is slapping me in the face for even bothering to read them or letting myself get emotionally invested in the characters.
This nigga doesn't know about canon tiers.
OP, it's not that weird that expanded material gets used as a way to expand on the world, but that a new high-profile addition doesn't adhere slavishly to that material. It wasn't wasted, Characters introduced in those books are mentioned or shown, which makes sense as you admit
>J.M. Lee was involved in the show
He helped them use the material that worked for the show. There's nothing wrong with this.
Oh god, did the Revision Autist take over the Dark Crystal threads?
FOUR ARMS
I'm tempted to make a new one, this shit's boring.
Is there an army of skeksis? Why don’t these gel nuggets just jump them there is Only like less than a dozen.
And that invalidates the claim that the series is out of touch with the original how?
They didn't in The Dark Crystal.
2010 politics is not 1984 politics.
The environmental message is 100% there and is in line with the themes about nature, but there's no reason to interpret the Gelflings like that. The conflict in the series is blatantly political, the conflict in the film is a spiritual one. You can't even pretend to not notice this.
>They didn't in The Dark Crystal.
Wasn't there someone last thread complaining about how the skeksis weren't as evil as they were in the movie? Are we now complaining the movie skeksis weren't the evil and making them evil now is political?
I don't care what someone else said in a different thread. The movie is spiritual. The series is political, and poorly done politics at that. That's my whole point.
>someone else
sure
I guess I just disagree with your idea that this isn't line with the lore developed for the movie
>ugly-ass looking characters
What the FUCK did you just say about my wife?
Gelflings freak me the fuck out. I'm glad the Skeksis genocided their uncanny valley asses
>trips of jewery.
Jesus Christ you're dumb.
Maybe you're just a paranoid retard who sounds like a parody of a right wing take on esjaydoubleus.
The Dark Crystal was a distinctly liberal work of fiction. In what way is recognizing that the series has taken a New Age story about nature, duality, balance, etc. and reduced it with a topical political rant right wing? Maybe you're a seething fanboy who's boxing up legitimate criticism as filing it under your alt-right internet boogeyman.
it hasn't done any of that, you dipshit.
Best character in the show or best character?
>they were split into their good and evil parts
I never interpreted it as "good" and "evil", but rather Physical / spiritual.
The Skeksis were about material possessions and desire. they surrounded themselves with the things they wanted, built an empire. However, when they died they left behind everything they had. Even a their bodies. Not a single Skeksis cared for another. They only wanted the possessions of the deceased.
The Mystics were all about the spiritual aspect, but without and desire they had no motivation. They left no mark on the world. When they died they left nothing behind. not even a body. It was as if they never were.
>who killed skekvar
I don't knoiw what this is but I saw Jae Lee do covers fro it and Superrir writing.
Is the show a prequel>
Yes, the show is a prequel to the Dark Crystal movie from 1982.
Are you the same guy who was angry about skeksis having four arms yesterday?
