Well another big part of the show is loving your self and being self indulgent has been displayed as being good in small bursts. but a character that's too self indulgent i.e. Pink diamond has been shown to ruin almost everyone's lives that she comes in contact with as a result(even amethyst causes some shit herself when she tries to do things she enjoys to an unhealthy degree). This film needed two things: One Connie should have had a bigger role by having her aid Steven in gaining back his lost powers and them fusing to combat and slow Spinel down until the Injector is destroyed leading into... Two Steven and Spinnel should have hugged or had something more than just a very passive hand holding that led to them Fusing via an metaphorical upgrade in their relationship (enemies to friends). And this Fusion had the power to stop what the Injector has done to the planet.

It would have been really nice imo to see this happen rather than just simply have steven kiss the planet better (which I still don't think adds up).

why does Steven ship so much better with gems so often?

I want to like Steven and Connie, they are cute. But Steven x Spinel, Pearl, Peridot, Amethyst, or even Lapis seems to show so much stronger bonds and chemistry.

They're simply much better characters. Connie is just a bad idea

Part of it is that Connie is kind of "vanilla" and generic, while the gems have more exaggerated cartoon-y personalities that make us enjoy their interactions more. Steven and Connie interactions seem like two "straight men" interacting so it doesn't seem as interesting.
Plus the gems are the main part of the show so they have more screentime.

Warning: Autism contained within - Hell own idea of a Pearl/Steven ship has the ship kick off with them both fully comprehending the shit PD/RQ has basically put them through and they're both just exhausted from it. But they do bond over drinks.

Whole ending could've been better. Instead of destroying the injector with her fists, Steven tells her she just has thousands of years of pent up anger and sadness because of what Pink did when she asks "Why do I wanna hurt you so bad", then he says he'll be her best friend and the brunt of all her stress relief, they look at each other, they kiss, they fuse, they turn off and destroy the injector together.
Then she stays with Steven and Connie gets a pang in her heart "for some reason" when she sees them.

You put scenes out of order with no coeherence, her gem turns but then it's fine, all for the sake of matching the lyric. That may sound fun on paper but you actually gain nothing out of it while making the whole scene weird.
I know it's just a fun little thing you made for the sake of it so I'm not trying to get you to change it and take it seriously or whatever, I'm just pointing it out in case you want to do more like this in the future. Don't bother trying to match a scene to a lyric even if they look like they "perfectly" go together. As long as the lyric is in the song it's the viewer's job to put it together if the song represents and/or is a metaphor for anything in the visuals, your job is to make the visuals coeherent - as with any piece of art you're trying to tell a story - and make it aesthetic. Suspension of disbelief. Going through the whole thing the diamonds went through to understand what Steven is would take time, something the movie doesn't have. You sacrifice the logic of how she knows what Pink's son is for the sake of getting to the good stuff without trying to awkwardly put it in the movie forcing them to rush the rest of the events even more.

It's a bit different with gems and in the case of Spinel it goes a bit beyond simple friendship.

PD was THE most important person in her world. She would do anything for her and she figured PD legit cared for her given the bond she thought they had. That is how highly she viewed her and PD fails to take any of this into account due to her childishness.

Even then, PD could have gone with a fuck ton of better alternatives. Have her stay with the other diamonds, keep her subjects entertained in her absence, attend the garden and have fun, anything. Nah though, instead PD just had her stand in place and left without a care.

They give an introduction to the basic outline of the plot, but a lot of the movie is re exploring the character arcs of the main characters. That being said Spinel is the best part of the movie and in that regard is self contain so if you are watching it for her go ahead.

Honestly, I liked the message of the movie. Steven realized that even at the start he was always changing. There's no reason to stop changing and leaving things behind, especially things that make you bitter.

I don't think Pink left her behind to be malicious or because she specifically wanted her out of the way, I think Pink did tell her to wait with the intention of coming back but being the flighty childish person she is, Pink literally forgot about her because Spinel was nothing but a plaything to her. PD is just like any other crystal gem, she was created in a certain role and had to break out of it. No other diamond would think twice about it, and neither did she. That's how she was made, it wasn't until AFTER she got to Earth she started getting "redeemed".
