It's sad. They used to be owned by Viacom so there was ample oppurtunity to pivot back into mass media, especially since they used to have so much merch (TCG no one played, magazine, plushies, action figures and real video games), and now it's a barely there site with busted features and a dwindling population that consists only of nostalgiafags
The fact that Viacom NEVER EVER considered making a Neopets television show despite having the cash and room on Nick to do it still surprises me to this day.

There's so much lore desu. What's pathetic aside from the whole thing being made of Flash and duct tape is the fact that when Viacom sold the site, tons of code was straight up lost and it took the staff a good year or so to make the site even usable, and even after the fact a bunch of games and features were gone forever. During the interrim even the art took a back seat; there were months where they didn't release the clothing options or colors for pets they're supposed to receive annually.
It was obviously always meant to be a joke. Although I would still pay to watch it desu.

One is a silly joke and the other is about neopets in general that got scrapped due to incompetence.
Why don't they start a crowd funding thing? Neopets is still fondly remembered and most people don't even realize it still exists and I'm sure they'd get plenty of money based on Nostalgia alone to at the very least update the site to current standards.
Hell, they could even commission some smaller studio to make some shorts for them, I'm sure Frederator would be down for something like that.
Would a Neopets TV show have kickstarted the rise of lore-driven narrative kid's animation half a decade early, or would Viacom keep plot writers away and force it to be episodic? I can only imagine Viacom handing the series over to Butch and him being in control of it.
The current Neopets owners just hold the IP to have it, it feels. Server costs with the drastically reduced playerbase is likely cheap enough to just keep pulling a profit from NC Mall users and super ancient subscriber oldfags.
If the Neopets brand ever gets tossed up for a cool 100 grand, I'd be down to buy it and try to revive it. But in the far more likely matter that it's still a couple million, maybe some animation startup would nab it for that purpose

Odds are that Neopets will be cheap as free if/when the current owners finally decide to sell.

there's a bunch of old plots, DoN comics, and Book of Ages entries that are coherent enough to turn into an anthology, so it depends on how the show would be structured. An adaptation of something like the Meridell Wars would fit into the lore based adventure show more, but something like Defenders of Neopia would be closer to the numerous adaptations of the Big 2 hero comics. The obvious downside here is potentially creating a generation of neopets obsessed furries like Horse Show for 8 Year Old Girls did
Atleast Neopets has the fairies to keep them straight.
I think the complexity in neopets designs would stave it off a bit.
You have to remember horse show is like distilled design genius in terms of simplicity and room for MS Paint recolor OC's.
That said, I think the problem with something like Meridell for an initial plot is that it involves time travel shenanigans, even if they're more of a framing mechanism. It would be good for establishing Faeries, though, especially since it chronologically occurs far enough ago to predate the Return of Doctor Sloth plot and you wouldn't want the Space Faerie to be an early addition lore-wise. Space is a hard opening sell when there's so much not-space stuff: When MOST stuff isn't space stuff.

There are multiple ways. You could buy dubloons and use them as tokens to get your pet trained on Krawk Island, or you could pay the Mystery Island training school in codestones.
Leveling up only mattered if you were going to the battledome, though.
Time Travelling Lisha would be a good framing device because it gives her the ability to jump into other plots that they could adapt. You have to start somewhere; you could start with the Tale of Woe but then you'd have to establish Neovia's backstory. You could start with NeoPets V2 or Return of Sloth but that requires a bunch of backstory on Kreludor and Grundo Refugees and so forth. You could do Brucey B and the Lost Desert or any number of things but you need an origin point
When you put it like that, Meridell does sound like it's the best starting point.
I just started playing neopets again a month ago after taking a break for several years. I'm going to beat Neoquest this time

If it's any consolation, it's piss easy to make NP now. You could become a millionaire in 2 weeks or something; the game just hands out free shit (probably because of the lack of players these days)
I still can’t believe they haven’t gotten those back up. At least key quest and habitarium, petpet Park might be hard since it was a multiplayer server type game. But I miss key quest so damn much, it was a big reason for me playing back then. Right now I just keep dressing my pets
the game randomly locks me out of my accounts for no reason too but you can submit tickets in regards to it. Happened to me four times since I started played again in like January
They literally only give a shit about getting your account back if you have an NC purchase history. Which I did, so I was able to get one of my side accounts back, but I know a lot of people have support tickets going unanswered after months.

This was one of my favorite games along with a game where it was a 3D smiley face ball you would try to roll around into a hole. Never have been able to play that one again
